Yup, what everyone guessed pretty quickly came true. It's bearded vikings landing on an icy shore. Remains the question if this will be solely aimed at the wolves of the sea or if we'll finally get that pagan dlc for Crusader Kings II everyone has been pining for.

EDIT: Paradox just announced the next DLC as being called 'The Old Gods' on their Paradox Convention.

Crusader Kings II: The Old Gods

Europe is in turmoil. The land has been fragmented into petty fiefdoms, the Emperor struggles with the Pope, and the Holy Father declares that all those who go to liberate the Holy Land will be freed of their sins. Now is the time for greatness.

Crusader Kings II: The Old Gods, the fourth expansion for the critically praised strategy/RPG, finally enables you to play as a Pagan or Zoroastrian ruler, with particular focus on the dreaded Vikings and their tradition of pillage and adventure.

Crusader Kings II explores one of the defining periods in world history in an experience crafted by Paradox Development Studio, the masters of Strategy. Medieval Europe comes to life in this game of knights, schemes and thrones.
Features

Play as a Pagan chieftain and ravage your weak neighbors. If you remain at peace for too long, your people will grow restless...

New special start date in 867 AD: The Viking Rurik has founded the kingdom of Rus and the Great Heathen Army under the sons of Ragnar Lodbrok rampages through England.

• Play as a Zoroastrian lord and restore your ancient religion to prominence.
• Adventurers: Landless characters can gather armies and go off to carve out new realms on their own.
• Prepared Invasions: Declare your intention to invade and watch your armies grow with adventurers and restless warriors, but don't wait too long to start your war or it might all fall apart...
• Rebels with a Cause: Rebels are no longer a faceless menace – they are now led by characters with agendas.
• Loot and pillage provinces. Burn down their cities and take their gold!
• Sacrifice to Odin at the great Blot!
• Christians and Muslims can dispatch missions to convert the depraved heathens.
• New beautiful Pagan interface skin.
• New events and decisions: berserkers, sejdr, curses, omens, divinations, runestones and much more.

Sounds good! Thanks to Wise Emperor for pointing this one out!

Even stretching the age of the sea wolves to incorporate every small raid still has the last viking attacks that took place in the Netherlands around 1000 AD. About 60 years before the game even starts. Wonder if this is going to be another 'alternative history' dlc like the Aztecs one.

Well, they could be Oesalians (lolno), who were referred to as vikings until the point when Danes conquered them during the Northern Crusades.

Not to mention that even chainmail was exceedingly rare in that time. Fuck, most didn't even wear helmets. Sigh.
Also notice that both of them own a sword.

I think the picture might have been made by an artist as the historical professor had a day off that day.

867 AD? :O

Does that include everything in between? That's a lot of random/unknown characters...

It's also only to be released in the second quarter - so at least two months still. Looking like a full expansion. Should fetch around $15-20.

Aaaand feudalism the way it is represented in the game really didn't start untill 1000 ad. But hey, better rebels, playable pagans and the chance/ability for holdings to be ruined makes me really interested.

Hey Bros, I couldn't find some reliable map of 867, so I took low quality photo of my history atlas, with the map of Europe between 823 and 907. It's in potato but you will get the overall picture.

If you need some deciphering, ask.

I'm assuming that it doesn't, and that's why it's a "special" start date. So you can probably start in 867, or in any date between 1066 and 1337.

Anyway, this sounds much better than anything I was expecting. Fuck the baltic pagans, vikings FTW!

"I will drink from your skull!"

"Less talking, more raiding!"

"That's a nice head you have on your shoulders."

867 is optimal date: Carolingian Empire divided, ERE BEFORE the golden age of Macedonian dynasty, fracturing Abbasid Caliphate, Bulgarians fighting with ERE, Hungarian Invasions, Great Moravia, crazy Vikings. If they pump up a bit Pagans blobbing could be severely cut.

Edit:

Also Khazars :troll:

Is Paradox hoping that the modders will 'mod their mod' with the earlier start date but no content?
