One can't really blame the British for simply having been more efficient at a game that everyone else was playing.

I understand that British were just playing the colonialism game like everything else. You can still individually judge their impact without laying particular blame on them.

For example I think Turks presence in Arab lands was ineffective at best, crippling at worst because of their lack of interest in administrating those provinces despite them being Muslim as well.
