Fact or evidence? There's certainly a lot of evidence that it wans't a accident - the azoreans fishing near Canada, the suspicious timing of Tordesillas putting the line further west, other people who were already here before Cabral, etc.

Documents were found in Tombo about an earlier expedition that returned from south america. The portuguese knew all about that land and sought to control it to hold onto the south atlantic. Unfortunately, I cannot recall the name of the guy who came here before Cabral.
