    Best RPGs by categories (story/exploration/C&C...)

1.) Narrative/Story: Planescape Torment - What else should I place? Deus Ex - No explanation needed. 2.) Exploration/Ambience: Gothic 2 - It's a shame how very few of you mentioned this gem. Aside from challenging combat (which becomes easier on your next playthroughs) Gothic 2 fixed most of the...

    ToEE with Temple+ Discussion

ToEE is an underrated gem ignored in favor of its siblings NVN and Baldur's Gate. ToEE was a way better RPG than NVN and BG IMO.

Or better yet, get a fan translation of the first Fire Emblem.

Let's hope that Fire Emblem Switch will mix the good qualities of both Old and New Fire Emblems.

    Open-World Design in RPGs

What open-world design do you want in an RPG? Do you prefer the design of Gothic, Morrowind, and BoTW or those of GTA, The Witcher 3, and Skyrim?

An assessment of Oblivion after having first played Skyrim, then Morrowind

Yet they are still considered RPGs because they have stats and a story. It seems like RPGs have no actual definition other than having stats or being story based, even the RPG devs of old had very different definitions of an RPG.

An assessment of Oblivion after having first played Skyrim, then Morrowind

I'm still curious about the difference between a simulation and an RPG thou. In games like Harvest Moon, Persona, and Stardew Valley ,if you are playing the life you choose and the character is defined by your actions with the world's characters and systems; does it make it an RPG, a sandbox, or...

Decline "It needs a deep story to become GoTY"

According to PS/Xbox fanboys, BoTW and Mario Odyssey dont deserve a GoTY because they dont have a "mature story" like Horizon Zero Dawn. Same thing was said for Divinity Original Sin 2, Persona 5, and Cuphead because they dont have a "deep story" for "matured adults". We are nearing the day...

Good luck trying to find a controller for that or even worse: make the kinect version fucking work.

An assessment of Oblivion after having first played Skyrim, then Morrowind

I agree, old school RPGs focusing more on one aspect and using the rest to enchance the core idea made them a more polished and memorable experience. Modern RPGs usually do the opposite and try to cram in 3 or more instead of just focusing on a single design first; Bethesda tried to combine a...

An assessment of Oblivion after having first played Skyrim, then Morrowind

You're right. But it would still be awesome to see one RPG try to combine every sub genre of an RPG thou it may be nearly impossible.

An assessment of Oblivion after having first played Skyrim, then Morrowind

The problem with the systems used in the infinity engine rpgs(except PS:T) and TES is that they only change the character's combat possibilities and equippable equipment. Compare that to the system used in the original Fallout games where the stats defined your options available in both combat...

    The Super BunnyHop Thread

I kinda remember some youtuber making a vid about Wolfenstein TNO's hit scan enemies being bad game design. Also, if you are talking about the good stuff in the Shadow Warrior reboot don't forget about its melee.

    The Super BunnyHop Thread

Genre mixes will always have their flaws thou. Like how Persona's mixture of life sim and dungeon crawling breaks the pacing or how the Shadow Warrior reboot's RPG elements slow down the gameplay and turn every enemy into a bullet sponge.
