Because the logical step from necromancy is necrophilia and boiware hasn't yet figured out a way to incorporate that fetish in a tastefully diverse and inclusive manner.

Weird, given that even Obsidian (FNV) managed to, and that was ages ago.

Also Noumena Studios (The Dark Eye: Demonicon), in which the player could smash both their own sister AND some undead, IIRC.

Necromancy should have been the perfect way to make RPGs more racially inclusive and diverse. Just imagine a negro (or even better, a negress) controlling an army of pale zombies with empty, Swedish looks on their faces, murmuring "gilla olika, gilla olika". That would be Black Power!

When I first played Morrowind in 2003 or so, I was convinced that becoming a Necromancer was in the game. That is, when you find the various tomes that are related to Necromancy, giving you instructions, etc., I thought it was either a hidden faction or there was some hidden "trick" to becoming a Necromancer. It wasn't until I started looking on the internet years later that I found out it wasn't in the game.

Bit of a shame there, but I agree, more RPGs that have Necromancy would be cool. In a game like that I would prefer if there are many schools of magic and one could specialize in Necromancy, or simply choose the Necromancer class and what not. Maybe with some nice alignment restrictions and different plays on the game mechanics (The Quest lets you roll an Undead character, which is treated poorly by human NPCs and has to eat moldy bread and drink dirty water. :P Little touches like that are always cool in RPGs, IMO. Those mechanics have some gameplay implications as well, albeit small ones. But moldy bread and dirty water are cheaper by about 1000% compared to normal food. :P)

RPGs tend to draw from fiction, that's why there's so much high fantasy, so... are there any good fantasy novels where the (villain) protagonist is a necromancer?

Can't think of any novels, but Clark Ashton Smith's short story The Empire of the Necromancers is excellent, and tells of how a couple of exiled Necromancers use necromancy to carve out a new empire.

There was some book that came out in the 50's or whatever. Something about some little guys and one of them found a ring. You probably haven't heard of it, but it was something like "Lords with the Ring." Think the book also had elves.

They love playing Nazis? Not me. I play a Socialist country. Population is much happier that way. Besides, we all know how the Nazis' story ends. :)

In business terms: If you play as necromancer, it's too natural for mods to make necrophilia-theme modules feature all kind of shits from romance to costumes. It would be too easy to lead to a shitstorm from media and concerned parents with buying power.

If you disable mods for that: what kind of shit game are you making and why?

So yeah, no necromancer.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Compared to other magic schools, it's actually quite common. On the other hand, illusionism, abjuration, and transmuters? Now that's discrimination!

In any event, it's probably just because "magic" is now associated with wizardry dudes casting fireballs and garbage like that, so that's what people expect, and that's what they get.

Evocation is flashy and cool.

you can summon undeads and cast spells that drain health and stats. Wtf more do you want? Becoming undead? You can become a vampire and NPCs will react to that. You can wear armor made of bones.

I just thought there was going to be more to it. Back then I didn't know there were 10 factions or so in the game, so I would discover them naturally by playing. I did find all the factions at the time, and I was finding so many secrets and things in the game such as books or NPC chatter that implied there were more secrets and this was one of them. There are a few books on Necromancy in the game, and I think one of them even gives a recipe on how to raise dead or something, IIRC. I expected maybe an official Necromancer questline (as in, multiple quests), perhaps a Necromancer faction. I also thought that maybe you could take dead bodies you see and raise them. Maybe become Undead, although yes, you can become a Vampire (didn't realize there were Vampire quests until years later. They hid those well enough. Side note but I'd love to see more weird "secrets" like that in future RPGs.)

In short, I just expected it to be more "official" and more to it. While it was no big deal-breaker or anything, it was a disappointment. But the game was and is still amazeballs. :)

If you read the books the would explain necromancers although not out right banned were shunned by society so I don't see way for them to form a faction with their own quests and branches in towns... well aside from Telvani who did not gave a shit about social stygma. They are also three Vampire factions each with its quests in game. We wont see secret factions in game cause in Modern Beth games you are expected to entire content in one play through... You are forced to join Mage Guild by Skyrim main Story line for example... even if you RP Warrior or Guild Thief.
