The state of Oblivion in 2012: Is it a fun game yet?

After the massive disappointment of Skyrim I'm left with the urge to play a good open world game.

Long story short, do mods make Oblivion an enjoyable hiking simulator yet? I know there are a veritable fuckton of mods for Morrowind, but I haven't kept up with the state of Oblivion mods at all. I barely played the game at all, actually, but the level scaling garbage ruined the game for me.

If Oblivion can somehow be modded into an enjoyable game, what mods are recommended? Or is the game just beyond hope of ever being anything enjoyable on the level that Morrowind is?

It's terrible. Even if you install all the right mods you will most likely still throw your computer out of the window the first time you talk to an NPC. Mods can't fix it.

As someone who has actually played the game wth lots of mods, the short answer is yes.
But the amount of time required to find the mods and in WryeBash bind them to make the one perfect game is hardly worth the effort, as you will spend more time tweaking then playing. And you need to learn to use some third part programs like mentioned WryeBash and BAIN.

But you can still have fun with a smaller selection of mods:
Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul to reduce the level scaling and make it more place centric, or Tamriel Immersion Experience to completely remove level scaling and making things much more unpredictable.
Darn UI (can't remember the excact name) to switch from a console UI to a proper PC one.
Deadly Reflexes or something to improve the combat.
Unique Landscape mods (20-30 of them now, I think) to make the landscape less generic.

Personally I think vanilla Morrowind is better than vanilla Oblivion, but I prefer modded Oblivion to both.
The main flaw of Oblivion was the level scaling which is easy to fix. The main flaw of MW is the static NPCs which can't be fixed. Oblivion NPCs are much more dynamic, and contrary to common belief they do more than just talk about mud crabs. It's not perfect but at least it makes Cyrodiil feel much more alive than Vvardenfell.

The main flaw remaining in Oblivion, IMO, is that every fucking line has to be voice acted. You can't even mod NPC dialogue without at least providing silent MP3s. The system used in Morrowind was far superior, with only greetings and combat dialogue being voiced.
The most ridiculous thing I ever heard was when The Mod Nazi added dialogue to a female Argonian. I've never laughed so hard as when I heard this guy trying to sound like a female Argonian.

My answer is no. As octavius said there are mods that fix scaling, add more monsters and items like OOO or Francesco leveled creatures and items. The thing is there are no mods to fix the uninteresting quests, bad dialogs and voice acting, awful dungeons and boring world design. True there are mods like Unique Landscape and while it makes the world less generic and more diverse there is still nothing to be done there. In my opinion dont bother, youll waste few days to download, install and make all the mods playable and play for the same amount of time only to realize that its still just Oblivion only with more diverse and balanced enemies.

Yeah, to put it simply, Oblivion's problems are far worse than just simple aesthetic issues or some mechanics that need to be tweaked. For modders to truly fix Oblivion they'd have to remake the entire game from scratch and write a story that isn't utterly retarded with quests that aren't so tedious and uninspired.

I haven't played Nehrim so I don't know if that's enough to justify getting or playing Oblivion but a total conversion mod like that is more likely to actually end up being a decent game.

Don't even bother installing it. Markec gave the perfect answer to your question.

Play something else.

Oblivion is beyond salvation, but I've heard a lot of good thing about Nehrim. You should probably play that instead, it is the closest to modding oblivion until it is fun, meaning a whole new game.

Screw it. I guess I'll either try Gothic 3 or reinstall Morrowind and play the "take a week to install mods" game.

Gothic 3 is heavily flawed but nowhere near as terrible as Oblivion.

the short answer is yes.

...

What is this shit? Out of all the flaws of Oblivion... Somebody bring the rope and the stool. We've got a faggot to hang.

Oblivion is now an excellent game if you apply the very elaborately done "Skyrim" mod from Bethesda. It's almost like a whole new game!

Almost. But still good.

Anybody had played Nehrim? I didn't play much but mostly because of the combat but deadly reflexes 5 mod works with it, so I will try that when I get the time.

Oblivion is now an excellent game if you apply the very elaborately done "Skyrim" mod from Bethesda. It's almost like a whole new game!

Almost. But still good.

Is it much better then Skyrim stand alone game? That one is complete shit.

Nehrim is nice, but the question is what to expect from it.
  • It does have a much better world design, dungeons, evironments, etc. look pretty nice (also NPCs look somewhat better than in Oblivion, by the way).
  • Iit does have some nice quests and a more interesting story, just don't expect Nobel-Prize-winning levels there.
  • It has hand-placed unique and set-items, so you get some incentive to do some exploring and raid that next dungeon, as you find most set items at the lowest level of some dungeon.
  • No level-scaling. Game-world is divided into regions with a given difficulty rating, so if you try to reach Cabaet on level 1 you will get raped hard.
  • Character system is a mixture of Bethesdas learning-by-doing and a "use skill-points to train"-system (you learn much slower just by using a skill, so you need trainers to raise it faster).
  • Character creation is not exactly complex. You get to choose from 3 races with some (small) disposition towards a certain playstyle, later you get to choose between 3 signs that give you some special abilities. Instead your character is mostly defined by what you do and which skills you raise, there are no real classes. There are also equipment sets (complete with set boni) for fighters, mages and thieves.
However, it does not have C&C, branching questlines or non-linear story (except for what you usually get from an "open" world, that is).
Also, it suffers a bit from Oblivions dated engine, esp. the city of Erothin can cause serious fps hits even on strong systems. Some parts of world and story are a bit underdeveloped, as they ran out of time (or probably just realized that they had aimed a little to high in some places), but that doesn't mean that it feels rushed or unfinished, it's merely that you get the feeling that they had planed to do more with some aspects.

Anyway, if you have Oblivion, just give it a try, it's free, so it's not as if you loose much except for a few hours of your precious time.
If you do, remember that you don't need to employ Oblivion-style meta-gaming to get a usable character, thanks to removed level-scaling you can just spend a bit more time to level up if you feel that a new region is to difficult for you.

Nehrim is fun. Yes it's held back by a lot of things tied to Oblivion being shit, like crappy NPC interaction, and crappy combat. It's also still not 100% polished, there are places that feel unfinished, unprofessionally done etc. However, it has

1) Enjoyable exploration. A huge new world with lots of unique "dungeons" to explore and loot to grab, not just some pre-generated shit with random loot that made exploring Oblivion an excercise in madness. This ties in to
2) A beatuful world. It feels like the creators really put their soul to making memorable locations. Some places you aren't likely to forget.
3) Main story. It's average, but there is one nonetheless (unlike the non-story of closing Oblivion gates).
4) A rehash of skill system to make it more like "Gothics" (clearly the creators were big fans of Pirahna Bytes), i.e. you get LPs per level and spend them on skills - your "get better as you use it" progression from Oblivion is there still, but it's extremely slow, so you need to spend those LPs to actually get anywhere.

I've loved Morrowind, Gothic 1/2/NotR and Risen and hated Oblivion OC. Nehrim is really cool, it's not like the third coming of Christ but in the current circumstances where we're short of new good RPG's coming out Nehrim is definitely something to check out.

Anybody had played Nehrim?

Its Oblivion with better dungeons, world design and loot but with all the rest of Oblivion faults (poorly done quests, combat, dialogs, character system and no c&c), but if those things are most important to you you might have fun with it. I just cant enjoy a sandbox game where there is either no c&c or a decent and challenging combat system.

The Elder Scrolls games are utter shit and trying to improve them with mods is like hoping to salvage a decent dinner out of a pile of poorly digested diarrhea.

Like octavius said, it's possible to have some fun with Oblivion but it's hardly worth the time to get there. I lost a whole week just by finding, downloading, installing, testing and tweaking mods to get something playable (and still had some glitches). I regret to have invested that much time. I would have better spend it with a whole week drinking binge or something like that.
