The Banner Saga 3's new time-bomb combat is delightfully apocalyptic

Banner%20Saga%203%20header.jpg

Plenty of the ingredients that make The Banner Saga the harrowing dish it is stay constant across the travels you go on with its caravan: the harshness of the world, the moral dilemmas, and don’t forget the perpetual misery. But between the first and second games, developers Stoic put together a number of combat improvements that made the sequel feel that bit more refined. The same can be said about The Banner Saga 3, which features a novel mechanic that ties directly into its doom-laden story. Prepare to fend off The Darkness in more ways than one.

As a mysterious cosmological phenomenon that has been part of The Banner Saga since the first game, The Darkness is a major part of the plot in this third and final chapter, as you might expect. One of your caravans is literally travelling through it, and so the characters escorting it will be regularly attacked by soldiers that The Darkness has warped and mutated.

“Everything you are going to be fighting is going to be nasty and weird,” Arnie Jorgensen, co-founder of Stoic, says. These enemies are based on foes you have fought before, but their purple, ragged skin indicates that The Darkness has turned them into something much more fierce. “They have new passive abilities since they've been warped,” he adds. “They have heightened statistics.”

Banner%20Saga%203.jpg

A fight in Darkness-covered lands is characterised by more than fearsome foes, though. “It's a race against time because The Darkness is encroaching,” Jorgensen explains. “In combat there is actually now a turn counter, where literally in each fight you are racing against the clock as well. If the turn counter reaches zero, another wave attacks you.”

This means that the enemies present on The Banner Saga 3’s chess-like battle grid at the start of combat are not the only enemies you have to worry about. As the Darkness counter runs down, new creatures will deploy onto the battlefield, which offers an additional challenge to deal with - especially in situations where you have been unable to clear the grid of all pre-existing enemies.

“If you clear the wave before the counter reaches zero you can flee,” Jorgensen reveals. “If you really love combat, you can fight longer and try to get an item from one of the minibosses in the next wave.” Battle is a risk/reward situation in most RPGs, but Stoic’s new ideas for The Banner Saga 3 appear to be toying with this dynamic in even more thrilling ways.

Banner%20Saga%203%20combat.jpg

While the series has always promoted character synergies, The Banner Saga 3 is pushing that even further by taking The Horn away. This news will likely alarm fans, as the magical device has been key to being successful in combat for two games now, allowing you to grant extra willpower to characters after a kill. Replacing it is a system that lets characters themselves buff others with extra willpower, meaning positioning on the field is of paramount importance. For example, a character with the ability to sing of your heroic deeds will inspire units in close proximity to them.

Further battle changes are introduced via new characters, such as the witch Alfrun. “She's the first character who can give strength to another character,” Jorgensen says. “It's a bit overpowered, but in The Darkness you're going to need it.”

As if that were not powerful enough, she also has the active ability Ride The Lightning, a magically-fuelled dive attack. “She jumps in, does damage, and gets back,” Jorgensen explains. “The further she travels, the more damage she does. So you might want to pose her behind a tank, jump in, do damage, and get back.” It is a move that is typical of the series’ combat roles, which challenge you to think spacing and movement tactically.

Banner%20Saga%203%20combat2.jpg

Joining Alfrun on the battlefield is Juno, a long-standing character in the series who is making her combat debut in The Banner Saga 3. Anyone familiar with her will be unsurprised to learn that she has a unique trick that makes her a powerful ally.

“Juno has been a mysterious character throughout the saga,” Zeb West, producer at Stoic, says. “She seems to know what's been going on but she's been really tight lipped. Now she's playable on the battlefield. An interesting ability she has is that, if she dies, she goes into this ghost world and awakens.”

When in the spirit realm, Juno can move to fonts on the battlefield and collect dark energy. This matter is able to resurrect Juno and put her back in the fight. “She can get one of [the fonts] and get one strength and one willpower and go back to her body,” Jorgensen explains.

“Or she could say ‘I'm gonna try for more’ before returning to her body. But the game is that, if you lose combat while she's in the spirit realm, you lose. If she can get back to her corpse she can fight on.” Clearly, there is a trade-off at play here: do you spend more time gathering strength in the spirit realm and potentially miss your chance to resurrect and keep the fight going, or come back early but woefully underpowered?

Stoic are aiming for a cataclysmic, last-stand-of-humanity conclusion for The Banner Saga, and that comes through with the changes to the game’s battle system. It seems safe to assume Stoic will deliver the same heavy sense of apocalypse with the narrative, so have plenty of pick-me-ups at the ready for when The Banner Saga 3 releases this summer.

2nd game was a financial failure. I reckon this one might be as well. Heard zero hype about it.

More Banner Saga games are coming after the third - "this is a world of untold tales"

banner%20saga%203%20juno.png

The developers of the Banner Saga series say that they will return to the games’ world after The Banner Saga 3. In an interview at GDC, co-founder of developer Stoic, Arnie Jorgensen, told PCGamesN that the studio will “definitely be delivering more content.”

While the fantasy saga is set to conclude with the release of the third title this summer, Jorgensen said there are plans for more Banner Saga - “this is a world of untold tales and pockets. When [Stoic] made the game map they just went to town on it and gave every location a name and there’s lore text there, whole areas of the map where you’re like ‘what happens down here?’ and ‘what do these people do during catastrophic events?’”

The games won’t have the same scope as the Banner Saga trilogy, but “it’ll be more like smaller bite size pieces of content for players to get more often than we’ve been giving in the past.”

Jorgensen also confirmed that the studio were still considering developing The Banner Saga: Factions. “After we have finished Banner Saga 3 we’ll be putting a team on continuing content for [Factions], we’re going to be peeling off the other team to work on something new and that remains to be seen.”

The Banner Saga 3 will release at some point this summer on PC and all major consoles, and will introduce wave-based combat to emphasize the oncoming Darkness.

Was it really a complete failure?

Even if it got 1/3 of the revenue (very conservative) of TBS1, isn't that good enough for Stoic? They seem like a pretty small studio. The 2nd was also mostly recycled art and engine, seems like a good deal still.

No because IIRC they lost money on BS2. Again, IIRC, BS2 cost a couple million to make. Even if they broke even, it’s still a struggle to then have to fund BS3. But instead of doing something else in between the devs want to make it a trilogy, regardless. Cuz, games are movies now or something? I dunno.

Actually that was an estimate for BS3, but I’d imagine BS2 wasnt that far off.

The Banner Saga 3 is probably gonna cost about $2 million to make - that's a lot. So maybe we could get $500,000, but when you get investment you're basically paying it back 3x... That means when we sell The Banner Saga 3 $1 million of extra money goes away [to the investors], as well as giving back the $500k. That would take the pressure off us for sure, a little bit. We would each de-leverage ourselves by $250,000, but when the game ships we're paying back an extra $1 million.

I kind of liked the first one, but the sequel had none of its predecessors charms and the story was kinda meh too. Still, will give a try to BS 3 when it comes out.

'Hey, our combat system is pretty retarded already, but I think it's still missing some extra annoyance. Any Ideas?'

'Hmmm, what about timers?'

'Perfect!'

I really wish you could switch combat system between games.

Did people really dislike the combat that much?

The turn order thing is a bit retarded as an idea, but in practice it made it play different from other turn based games, which I found pretty cool. TBS1 could also be quite hard if you didn't rest and did all the optional battles.

To each his own I guess.

Since at least the first one was a success, I even might be in the minority hating the system, but I want my TBT to make at least some sense.

I wouldn't be angry about it if the rest of the game wouldn't look right up my alley. What a shame.

Whew I'm glad even on the codex people found the combat system extremely annoying

Didn't even bother playing the second one after experiencing the first

The biggest problem is that they decided to make trilogy instead of doing a single game. Tell Tale games have the same problem, they sell the first episode and then people just forget about the rest. People don't remember part of a game for 5 years, waiting for the next part to come out. Episodic content is the most idiotic way to sell a game.

GDC 2018: The Banner Saga 3 Goes Into the Darkness

Every saga must come to an end and the upcoming third entry will set The Banner Saga ablaze as it sails to Valhalla. The Banner Saga 3 is a direct continuation of the previous entry. Over the previous two entries of this viking inspired series, humans and Varls have been battling an army of Dredge and things aren’t progressing quite as well as they would have liked. This is further complicated as some mysterious force known as the Darkness is enveloping the land, twisting and corrupting everything within. Bolverk’s Ravens have teamed up with Iver’s Caravan, which the demo indicates this isn’t exactly the best of friends traveling together. During the portion that was shown in the demo, the two factions always came to blows against each other. Nevertheless, the warriors venture forward to put an end to the Darkness.

The turn-based combat in The Banner Saga 3 has a certain sense of urgency to it. There is a counter keeping track of the turns in battle and should it happen to reach zero before all the Dredge is defeated, the second wave will arrive without giving the player any time to prep for their arrival. Upon eliminating a wave of enemies the player will be given an option to retreat if they simply want to keep progressing the story or they will have the option to continue fighting the next wave of Dredge for an increased reward at the battle’s conclusion.

There are over forty playable heroes, and there are some unique new additions to the party. Juno is playable for the first time, and she is cursed with the ability where she doesn’t necessarily die if she falls in combat. She is able to enter an ethereal state, and travel across the board collecting power ups that aren’t available in the corporeal world. The catch to this is she has to return to her body before the battle ends. Players will also have the option to play as Bulwark the Dredge, who will not be powered down when he joins the player’s party which is great because there is nothing worse than gaining a powerful adversary as an ally and having their power level scaled down. Because this is the final showdown, characters that reach a certain level will be awarded with the option to choose a unique title, such as Bloodletter, Monster Killer or The Hopeful. Adding The Hopeful as a title to a brutally power warrior sounds ridiculous, which is exactly what this writer intends to do. Once a title is given to a character no other character may claim it, and in addition to being a cool name certain attributes come with certain titles.

The Banner Saga series has always had player choices impact the game, and as a continuation of the story told by the previous entries there are several different ways the game plays out. Choices made in the earlier games that determine character relationships and whether or not certain characters survive all carry over to The Banner Saga 3 if a save file is imported, which accounts for all possible outcomes and variables that players could have encountered in previous titles. The approach to variable storytelling will continue with this ending, leading to a multitude of possible endings that show the choices that player makes actually matters as opposed to having all branching paths lead to the same destination. In this entry, no hero is immune from death.

The Last Stand against the Dredge will take place at Arberrang. This is the stage of the game where the caravan’s journeying comes to an end and they must fight the Dredge to the very end. This is where all the decisions the player makes during the game will come to a head as the Dredge will try to lay waste to everything the player has been fighting to protect. During this battle the landscape of the city will be visibly changed as the fate of the world is decided. The Darkness may be dispatched, every hero may perish or any number of outcomes that lie in between either extreme are possible. The Banner Saga 3 is expected to be out this summer for PlayStation 4, Switch, PC and Xbox One.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
So basically BS3 is "we don't have a lot of money so we recolor the old enemies and give them better stats"? :P

I'm not sure what/why new races they would add - TBS1+TBS2 is a bunch already, and everything is a candidate for "Darkness corrupted" versions.

A more convoluted combat system which is fundamentally is the same as before (as in fucking broken)!?

Yeah. I think I will skip this shit. I can only play one Banner Saga game per year and Ash of Gods was enough.
