3000 people pledging 125000 dollar? Methinks some got carried away.

25000 in 6 hours? I'd be amazed. Still...
My suspicious nature makes me think that publishers are channeling funds to this and Republique to avoid another Police Warfare.
The good news is that publishers like big hits and big failures. It's how they run their business and it's how they closed down every studio and fired every developer that worked on that "rich, engaging but niche video game" that we all love. Kickstarter is, no matter who funds it, about the niche games that do not have the potential to sell 10 million copies (provided the games are for PC and not mobiles). So if the publishers want to go crazy and secretly fund the exact games they hate, I'm all for it.
