I hope the obvious pun on the title won't comdenm this thread to the same fate of the Prisoner of Ice LP and of my previous CYOA that died do to my own bursts of inactivity combined with general lack of interest, and the fact it was ultimately a "replacement" for a Hearts of Iron 2 Let's Play rather than something done purely for the sake of it. As for the "original" setting I'll use for this and reason for the title, everything will be clearer as this thread progresses because I'm not a fan of gratuitous exposition of [lore] but you'll have lots of choices about it this time, starting right now.

    1. Choose a historical timeline

And the choice starts right now. Vote on a historical timeline, region and theme where this will start on. Note that the character baseline will also be defined in this first choice, but not his specific abilities. This will start right here and right now and I hope this greater flexibility of setting choice will draw greater interest than the previous one did. After the historical age this will start is picked, then will come the character creation that will reveal more on what this is intended to be about. This first page will already give some hints, but soon it will become clear. I promise to deliver a bit of everything: Character-driven tales, alternate history, horror. The historical choice will have a lot of influence on the most common theme, of course.

And here are the available options:

    1) Many thousand years BC. You are part of the very first generations of the Jewish people, who lived long before the foundation of Israel, long before the alleged great deluge, but unlike most you eventually began to doubt the claims of the early prophets about the one god, and you felt something was wrong about the direction your people were heading towards, but you knew there was little you could about it.

    2) 88 BC. You are one of the Greek epicureans in Athens, seeking to achieve a state of blissful indifference about life, death and suffering, yet ultimately you still have to find a purpose in your existence without belief in gods, in an afterlife and in the supernatural. Your principles will be put at a test however, as your city now under Roman subjugation is being sacrificed to the flames by general Sulla.

    3) The year is 999 AD. You are an Icelander and part of Leif Ericson's recently hired crew as they journey west beyond Greenland based upon the claims of a merchant called Bjarni Herjólfsson that he sighted land west of Greenland after his ship was blown off-course. You have been recently forcefully converted into Christianity, and witnessed what happened to those few who refused, a sight you hope to forget if there is indeed a New World beyond that may even be worth settling and full of untold riches.

    4) You are the German Prince-Bishop of the just established Patriarchate of Aquileia in 1077 AD, and now your struggle to consolidate your power continues, as do your internal struggle between the outwards fanaticism you have to show to ensure your status and your true, gradual fall from grace and disbelief in God after witnessing the worst of the Catholic Church power plays, and being part of them.

    5) 1789. You are just a French chambermaid, living a life without glory and just doing what you had to do to have bread for you and your children, until that fateful day you lost your job for arbitrary reasons, having no more bread while most faced terrible food shortages, and as the storm of revolution brewed, you would end becoming one of the primary organizers of the Women's march on Versailles, a small part of what later would become the French Revolution and the prelude to feminism, and the beginning of a radical change in your life.

    6) 1835. You live in one of the poorest regions of an already not exactly rich country, Brazil, near the Amazonian rainforest in its North, bordering the Guyanas. Driven by the misery of the region, a group of rebels stormed the local seat of government and proclaimed the Republic of Great Para, seceding from the empire. All odds are stacked against you and your comrades, but you are determined to fight to the bitter end for the ideals of the Republic, now that the years of famine took away your faith in anything else.

    7) 1936, Republican Spain, Barcelona. You are one of the members of CNT/FAI, and possibly among the most radically anti-religious ones, having participating of the burning and pillaging of three Churches yourself, and also the leader of a local Catalan militia. You know the storm of a Civil War is coming as certainly as is the storm of a new world war along the rise of Nazi Germany and fascist Italy, one which, should CNT/FAI emerge victorious against both the treasonous Stalinists and fascists, will definitively reach your own country.

    8) 2287, African Union. Better late than never, and indeed, as one of the first Africans to journey towards the first and for now only African Union settlement outside of Earth, you will have many opportunities and adventures in this new land, beyond the solar system, in a star system that the Africans, under the leadership of the King of Kings of Africa Robert V, have hidden so well from the first-rate world powers, for the probes found much more than only an almost Earth-like planet there. But it will be a long journey... very long after the FTL idea was dismissed and proven just an idea. Hopefully being in cryo for a long time won't have side effects.

I hope the options have been diversified enough.

    8 is lulzy as fuck.

The French Revolution is one of the most fascinating periods in history, but the character in 4) interests me the most, so I'm voting 4). Viking option is pretty cool too.

2, of course! A lifestyle of restrained, thoughtful, simple epicureanism sounds like just the thing.

Some nice choices here. Space Africa sounds lulzy, but I would rather have something historical.

So I pick 7 spanish civil war. Vikings are a close second.
