Ok, looking at the descriptions people have written here about different forumites makes it really clear it's a bad thing to do. Because those descriptions often hardly resemble those people at all, not how I perceive them at least. Like someone described Jaesun as a "zen figure"... What?

A party that's somehow totally disillusioned with the status quo, and on a quest to find Incline in some sense. One of them seems really enthusiastic and tries all it can to convert you to their cause ("X has all the answers!"), one is totally dismissive if you don't instantly suck up to them and their POV (you don't even know what you don't know), one will splurge forward huge walls of text about X with passive-agressive attitude, one has kinda given up all hope that nothing will come of their quest but still tags along, one who will answer with incoherent rage... Also these guys don't like each other too much, and it's both possible to totally avoid a fight, or to get one or more of them to side with you against the rest. Maybe you can even try to help them with their (truly hopeless) quest.
Their combat roles and appearance being something that fits in with the rest of the game - no point to get too deep into that, might as well let them to sort out whatever races/classes/whatever in their world best suit the personalities.

Why don't you guys go for something serious rather than an in-joke? The formidable, intimidating, and dangerous party that you always wanted to play in a RPG.

I always wanted a D&D game where I could play a Chaotic Evil party of

1) A Balor
2) A Drider
3) A Dragon (that remains shape-shifted in human form, but can revert during fights)
4) A Beholder
5) A Demi-lich lord
6) An Illithid Mindflayer

This could be a special mission pack party. You can't create any of these classes or races in character creation. But you can play them with the mission pack that you unlock after defeating the game once on the highest difficulty. Something cool like that. And maybe give this special mission pack party its own unique opening in a different and harder dungeon. THIS should be the Codex party - the proof that Codexers will always play on the highest difficulty to get the best rewards?

I know I am largely alone in this request. I know my chances of convincing anybody are remote in this regard. But surely there is someone else who wants a RPG where you can command a party of liches and beholders? mondblut and Humanity has risen!, surely you agree with me? What about VentilatorOfDoom and Crooked Bee - as serious D&D enthusiasts and skeptics of this Codex meta-reference plan, maybe you agree too?

Wyrmlord III I like the idea of a monster party.

I could also get behind the idea of DarkUnderlord leading such a party. You know, kinda like Werdna commanded a party of monsters in Wizardry IV. That should be memorable, at least, and without being too silly.

I like your idea of this party Wyrmlord or whoever you are. It would only be symbolic of who requested it, not explicit. I can agree with it more than the rest of this stuff

The problem is this is a whole new setting. They probably won't release the monster list before release and leaving it up to them to pick the monsters will probably have a bad result.

^ Erm... There are still 24 out of 50 of the $1,000 prizes left herostratus.

The Cleaver and the Saint:

Codex.jpg

* The Cleaver - A huge (the height of a man and a half), loin-cloth clad Barbarian who claims he has "metal bones". He's carrying a "baby" (a doll). His weapon is a cleaver and as he attacks, he spurts prophecies of your impending doom.
Great drawing and i like the touch with the doll.
He could have conversations with the doll - a bit like Minsc and Boo.

I like the idea of archetypes, with unique but subtle twists that refers to Codexers

The ideas of Lord Vincent the Dark Dweller and The Cleaver aren't so bad, especially if they'd stay true to Abraxas' concept art. The monster party certainly sounds better than what the poll suggests. I don't think they will have those monster types in Eternity though.

I like the runes for Truth. You could use this for the 'u'.

An awesome character and the reference is very subtle. I'd suggest to make him a mad, half-orc (neanderthal DNA, duh) priest. Priest goes better with spurting prophecies and can explain "the baby" - a mummified totem. He scribbles something into an old grimoire he carries with him, but when you loot it and try to read it, it become clear that it's a very cryptic and evil tome, taunting you with knowledge you don't know.

MCA Project: Eternity
could we have an update how much money there's already donated?
what will happen if the 5k goal is missed? do we pledge the donated amount to kickstarter?

i also favor the idea of a more serious party carrying a codex they all vowed to. or perhaps shattered souls bound to a codex. or you find a codex in an ancient crypt and as soon as you read it the party materialize in fron of you, freed from their planar prison. something which fits to the story and ain't just there for the lulz.

the concept above is great!

I'll have to go through it all and count it tomorrow afternoon but a few hundred dollar donations have come in already.

If we fail to raise the $5k I'll run off to Mexico and retire in luxury with whatever we do manage to raise, we'll donate whatever we get.

Why should a mind flayer or a beholder work together when they basically see every other race as inferior to their own? Especially the former I cannot imagine being in a "party" due to their insanity.

The monster idea is nifty.
But if we do end up with codexers...
The Bee - A female rogue. She wields The Sting - a rapier coated in bee poison. She yells "Let's play" when attacking you.

Beholders and mind flayers are intellectual property of WotC. :P

Firstly you need to think up what kind of overall encounter you want, and make it something interesting in itself. Only after that work out the subtle quirks.

Not just something to maximize how many silly things you can showcase.

Here's a simple idea for a codexian encounter: a high-level party located in the starting area.

They are totally overpowered for 1st level adventurers and the player will have to come back much later to defeat them. In short, the Codex party does not scale to your level.

Example of ingame explanation:
They could conquer the world if they wanted to, but are too busy fighting each other. The local community is afraid of their presence but anyone confronting them ends up dead. However, they pose little threat since they never leave their cave/building.

^ Wow that looks like MCA

I don't think I'll be donating to this one, but I'd say a Cleve character would be great. A Skyway "BSB" character would probably represent the Codex best, though.

I would suggest a Western Civilisation Defence Squad expedition, operating far away from its pristine homeland. Its mission would be to examine and catalogue specimens of surrounding races, partially to gain greater insight into their nature, but ultimately to aid in the search of the true origin of their own superior ancestors.

Party members include:

The monocled gentleman - A pure-bred scholar, acting as the leader of the expedition. Knowledgeable and polite, he will inquire about races deemed to be particularly interesting, and offer to pay bounties for skulls or even live specimens (companions, peasants and whatnot).

The radical traditionalist - Curt, abrasive and dismissive of lesser beings, this fellow is primarily concerned with mysticism and spiritual matters. He will only talk to sufficiently intelligent males, and might agree to trade mystical items. Presumably some kind of mage.

The zealous missionary - A priest of an unpopular yet still significant faith. He will gladly preach about his god, but at the first sign of counter-arguments from the player, he will become angry and condemn him to eternal damnation. He might ask for donations and provisions, but will turn hostile if the player gives him bread.

The loyal crusader - This veteran warrior is a devoted adherent of the missionary's faith. He is about as charming as your typical Amnish soldier and is by all accounts the muscle of the operation. If engaged in dialogue, he will unleash a long stream of hostile remarks about pretty much everyone and everything he loathes in the world.

The depraved ranger - Acting as the scout and hunter of the party, this brooding northerner holds nothing but contempt for lesser (that is to say, other) races. Nevertheless, he might try to solicit charismatic and beautiful characters for unspeakable services.

The disgruntled dwarf - Pure mercenary rabble, hired as a pathfinder, labourer and supplementary guard. Characteristically greedy, this malicious little creature will eagerly reveal some party secrets in exchange for much-coveted potatoes. Information ranges from detailed accounts of the ranger taking some "less than tasteful" liberties with discarded specimens, to the location of a temple full of untold treasures (a lie, of course).

This :D . The Western Civilization Defence Squad is the most fascinating part of the Codex.
