Clan Fortyseven finally declared the vassalage null and void. As twenty thousand troops descend upon his fortress, Kagetora Nagao rally his forces for one last stand. The rest of realm expresses disbelief and outrage.
So they've finally lost it. Arkay, your descendants have dishonored your name! I shall rejoin you soon old friend...

Kagetora fled to Tochio Castle, his last remaining fortress in the north.
His few defenders surrendered after a week of siege.

Avoiding detection, Kagetora leads his men along the river.
It will be days before the enemy can find him.

The northern Nagao territory is devoid of top officers and has remain dormant for so long. Can they actually hold up against two Hojo invasion on two fronts or will Kagetora sacrifice either one?

Next month comes quickly as Hojo descends upon Otawara.
The defenders, slightly outnumbered, maintained their position as relief forces drew closer to the Castle.
In the north, the summoned defenders answered the call and massed quickly at Kitajo, surprising the attackers with a sudden numerical disadvantage.
Faced with the prospect of being defeated, the Hojo attack marched in the opposite direction.
The northern defense forces, sensing an opportunity, marches onward to prevent a Hojo force of 12,500 from escaping into its border.
Elsewhere, minor casualties were sustained between both sides in Otawara Castle in early skirmishes. But the attackers failed to make a breakthrough before relief forces arrive, giving the defense with a slight advantage.

The defenders of Otawara held strong, defeating yet another massive assault from Hojo clan. Yet even more comes..
In the North, the defenders failed to cut off the Hojo's army retreat.
It was a missed opportunity. The situation then deteriorated into a stand off between the two.
There was no pressure for the defenders to attack. They've plenty of rations and numbers to bolster their ranks. Hojo's home ground advantage is not so clear up north.
Meanwhile, South of Otawara, a massive army of 27,000 marches northwards...
Kagetora knows he cannot let that massive army march unopposed. He summons his men and launched a daring assault at an army nearly three times his own.
They are fortunate, the army is led by an unskilled officer, possibly marching from a backwater city garrison to the front line. Calling upon the aid of the divines and his tribal allies, Kagetora launches a fierce assault into the large force.
When the tribal forces depleted, the Hojo had already lost 5,000 men. But Kagetora wasn't finished...
His 4,000 crashed against the 14,000..
When it was all over, nearly 9,000 Hojo men lay dead on the bloody grass. Kagetora's attack costed him around 4,000 men.
Deciding it was enough gain for now, he retreated to Otawara, leaving his opponent in total disarray.
Days later, the Hojo edged closer to Otawara, seeking revenge.
This time the Hojo forces holds a near 6,000 men advantage above the defenders.
In the North, the defenders failed to cut off the Hojo's army retreat.

Only to redirect his forces when another Hojo force approaches from the east.
Two units of Hojo were caught outgunned and unprepared. They number nearly 8,000.
No mercy was given.
Elsewhere in the north, a lone Hojo unit tries its luck against superior numbers.
A decision that was duly punished by Kiyosue Anto of the north...

The outnumbered defenders fall easily under the onslaught.
As more Hojo troops arrive, the Coalition force splits off to deal with incoming threat while the rest remains to besiege the Castle.

Still, more arrive. Another 6,500 en route from Utsonomiya.
This time, Kagetora takes charge.
A second Hojo Castle falls as another 20,000-strong Hojo relief force arrives.

What it takes to win
1557 April - A month before the end of the three year Coalition pact
Kagetora's aggressive campaign the past few years finally bore fruit. No less than five Hojo Strongholds were captured in a series of mass battles and constant reinforcements. As the third year is coming to an end, fatigue begins to set in and the Hojo clan, despite being pushed back in the east, made further gains to the west. To the north, the stalemate was never broken.
Mmm, shall we renew the pact?
I think so? Why wouldn't we?
Mmmm... I must confess, I do not think our former lord's ambition of fighting a shared front with the Coalition is achievable at this rate. The Imagawa has lost so much ground and is now fighting for survival. They need us more than we need them.

We've no other way out of our power-base. We're cut off from the rest of Japan by Hojo Clan's territory.
I don't see a problem. We cut a path through, tear their insides out. We've beaten them again and again.
I am aware of our late victories, but the fact they can still muster more men from their core provinces meant we need to make them bleed more.
Then take more risks. Go all out. We've captured a string of forward bases near their borders, we'll use the rear garrison as primary hammer force till it's broken, then use the forward bases to replenish our numbers.
