Alright so i just spent some free time this week trying out minecraft for the first time. It is a terrible game. Now I am going to tell you why in this detailed enumerated list:

1. The game is fucking boring and there is no point to it unless you want to waste hours of your life building some 'pretty' castle or skyscraper or whatever the fuck that actually has no practical purpose whatsoever in the game in which case you are probably autistic.

2. Apparently all the idiots that waste time on this game have now implemented shitloads of mods on their servers that prevent me from destroying their shit, making multiplayer just as shitty as singleplayer.

In short, if you want to build shit with lego blocks go buy a lego block building game or even better buy some antifreeze and drink that shit.

True story right there.

I've never tried Minecraft because I refuse to pollute my computers with Java.

Pretty much. I lost all interest once I saw all the content.

It's a shame, though, if it went the Robinson's Requiem route, emphasizing the survival element, it might be pretty decent.

So, let me see if I get this right.

- building fucking boring shit with Lego has no point to it unless you want to waste hours of your life building some 'pretty' castle or skyscraper or whatever the fuck that actually has no practical purpose whatsoever in life, in which case you are probably just enjoying some good ol' fun with things that remind you of when we were kids

You've been playing the classic shit?

Griefing on minecraft was fun, especially finding ways to circumvent the protections, i alos loved the Salem atmosphere it induced.

But the real fun begins at SMP with the current updates, making your own circutry to power functions is the new game, and this game is going to be a platform for all kinds of mods and different gameplay.

(agree on the autism bit though)

I don't see how building a pretty castle is any less practical than romancing a party member or shooting some monsters.

So it's a noble use of one's time shooting imaginary monsters in the face with pretend guns, but somehow it's an autistic waste of time to build imaginary structures?

I'm with Destroid here. While people are always quick to trot out the whole "well maybe it's just not for YOU, man" or "to each is own" or whatever bullshit, I think it really applies here. It's a very different form of gameplay (Yes, GAMEPLAY!) than most other videogames, so it won't necessarily appeal to all regular gamers. But I do think it's a legitimate form of gameplay that a large group of people are (obviously) enjoying quite a bit.

This. I tried the Minecraft demo and didn't like it... not enough structure, and the creation aspect got old to me pretty quickly. I'd rather build games using a genuine editor or SDK or some such, but for hobbyists and whatnot, Minecraft is a great way to create things and socialise with others. I'm not a fan of the grinding attached to the gameplay, mind you, and there are probably better outlets for one's creativity, but if people want to have fun building stuff, why stop them?

well, minecraft as it is now is just about building stuff all over the place, but im guessing the Adventure update will fill it out even more with other stuff to do then build.

I think the problem we are having here with minecraft is that "in its current state" the game is boring as shit - unless you enjoy the "toy play" that is described in PorkaMorka's link to the Something Awful forumsl. The game is in the Beta/Alpha/GreekLetter stage with a lot of missing substance (hence the lack of game play/goals within the game). The problem with Minecraft though, is that it is never going to get out of this infantile state. The source will be released eventually once the guy gets sick of it (says so on the official minecraft site), and then we can enjoy hundreds of shitty minecraft spin-offs and mods that probably will add little to no value to the game in terms of game play. Boring.

I don't know about 'blows' but it's highly overrated. Credit to Notch who bilked a bunch of morons out of millions of dollars making digital Legos -- not even out of alpha, is it?

Yeah... that should arrive sometime in 2015.

Damn that SA link, I thought I came to the toy/game thing independently but I must have picked it up from reading some Greg Costikyan thing. The experience of being excited by Dwarf Fortress and then seeing it collapse in bullshit was really formative.

It's in "Beta" now and will supposedly be "Released" at 11/11/11.

And GOD DAMN I hope that adventure update adds enough game to Minecraft. As-is I load it up once in a blue moon and stack some blocks for half an hour, but if there was even Terraria levels of loot collecting and exploration I'd be pleased as hell.

This isn't exactly a new concept, that's why we refer to these games as a 'sandbox'. The genre has been around since very early in videogames. One even made it into our top 10 strategy games (EU3).

Ultimately Minecraft does not have a point. That is my problem with it.

See, this is exactly the sort of argument that I find absurd. What's the point of any game? To play. To have fun. Whether you do that by shooting things, stabbing things, talking to people, guiding armies, clicking on objects to combine them, driving a car, or building shit out of dozens of different types of objects is really beside the point.

You don't like games based on building things out of simple blocks that you need to mine for in first person. Okay. I don't like games based on racing cars. One is no more pointless than the other.
