Here's the thing I don't get: Why not just broadcast the enemy's intentions to the entire planet? Then demand that they reroute the ship. When they refuse, everyone will know, or at least suspect that they are going to drop it and cause a global nuclear winter. Hopefully that will lead to them nuking the colony before it starts dropping - or at least not blaming us for attacking. Also, I wonder if the UNS are in on this...

You could, but why would anyone listen? I mean, you're demanding an enemy faction reroute their entire escort based on the fact that you think they're going too close. In times of war. That might be a bit unreasonable. Being proved right after the fact might be little consolation. Or did you think they won't do it if someone calls them out on it, or if they might look like the bad guys?

People are seriously going with A?

Treave already stated that there is a chance for great glory with B, which means that if we play our cards right we will be able to prevent a considerable amount or all of the damage even with the delay. Going with B will also keep us from appearing like the massive assholes we would appear to be in A and keep us from pissing off the chain of command, which has the added bonus of us getting useful support in actually stopping this gigantic structure.

A could save more people, maybe, depending on how things turn out, but aside from that variable it appears to be generally worse.

Whacky theory:
I have a sneaking suspicion that A will allow us to meet up with Rei and flip her - letting us use our shatterpoint to attack and stop the colony from going into a lower orbit, while B will bring enough firepower to handle things on our own, but arrives too late to stop much of the damage.

Thing is, Rei was in a hurry to leave. I'm betting that she's there right now. If we get there ahead of time we can convince her to team up and stop this madness.

Well, I have a hard time believing that most of the UNS (and the Dunamis) - who shouldn't be cultified, would go along with it without some sort of fuss. But I guess they are, since the UNS is part of the escort. Any chance that the UNS escort isn't in on it? Pretty crazy to cause a nuclear winter when your side is holding it's own pretty well, if not outright winning.

Here's the thing, B doesn't play to Senya's strengths. So far, we've built up a character who's brilliant at tactics, improvisation and guerrilla warfare and all of these things will be best utilized in A. Think Ean during his assassination campaign to regain power: quick, cunning and creative, but not so good on the raw power aspect, hence his need to maneuver and improvise; I'm just thinking that going B here will end up like going to Egypt dd in chapter five: we waste valuable time that could be spent setting up Marduk in Greece (or in our case, scouting and setting up the battlefield for Hackett's Fifth Fleet:troll:); and we finally arrive at Olympus, we won't have the brute force to beat down both Marduk and Zeus, so we will have to compromise and come up with shit at the last possible second and out come the Terrasphagos (or in our case, muscle through two fleets' worth of firepower to somehow take down a twenty kilometer space station). Because, like Ean, right now we have all the smarts and improvisation skills we need. What we don't have is brute force.

As I see it, it's not about the enemy so much as it is for "I told you so" when everyone and their grandma will think of giving us flack in regards to this whole operation. That, and for Rei: I can't imagine she'll be personally comfortable with her big brother (Imouto means little sister, right?) calling out her side in a live broadcast across the whole world, maybe will even inspire even more turmoil and hand-wringing within her (side note: and here I thought Senya was a deluded fool living in a glass world), making her easier to convert. Although this is a longshot and assumptions.

You could say that they know the Empire's industrial capacity would turn the tide against them once the technological gap is closed. Perhaps they want to force a swift surrender by taking out Africa, or the capital.

War doesn't always produce rational actors, and you don't know that the UNS high command isn't cultified. The cult is pretty popular there, Indus and in Higashi.

Getting flack for the operation would be the last thing I would be worried about right now if I were you guys.

I'm looking forward to hearing Senya honestly answer why he did what he did. Because coming from a guy that prevented an assassination of the Emperor by going up against hopeless odds and nearly dying, saved an ISC prototype, learned to fly said prototype, performed daring behind-the-line raids, stood up to the greatest ace of the current time and flipped off the Empress not once, but twice, and will probably pull some borderline suicidal shit to save the planet, this:
“Ideals are the only thing that justify fighting. Do you not fight because you believe in the Higashi and the Empire?”

“Well, no.” I admit. “I'm doing it just because.”

is a lame-ass excuse. Just sayin'.
Edit: that, or straight-up Kay-oss.

Senya's great with that stuff and all, but 'tactics' and 'guerilla warfare' don't go too far in blowing up a twenty km ship, at least not by this late in the game. You said it yourself; what we don't have is brute force, despite our brains and improvisation. B is the option that will get us the military support we need.

Both A and B can lead to Mega-Glory. If you do A you will arrive beforehand, allowing you to set up the battlefield, but you'll still face all of the enemy forces by yourself if you want to delay the drop. Langorn will definitely come in A. In both scenarios the Fifth Fleet itself should arrive in the area on the same day of the apparent colony drop, but the colony will be between it and the Earth, meaning that they have to chase it down. Given that the thing is huge, it might not be possible to fully destroy it either as the battleships might not be able to close the distance in time. Anhur could, but it's just one frame. You're also not sure about the civilians in the colony.
What I'm saying here is that we're better off exercising our Tactical Genius (TM) to scout out the enemy, set up the battlefield and then call in a whole fleet's worth of ordnance on these fuckers.

That, and we'll be able to take the initiative on any other convenient openings we can find. Like Rei.

I would like A as long as we use our early advantage to:
Turn Rei and her forces
Find a way to set up the battlefield to our advantage, maybe reposition asteroids or satellites/orbital debris somehow? set up jury rigged kinetic weapons using such debris?
Set it up so Senya gets the max amount of credit as a tactictian/strategist/pilot/hero/future emperor (both should be easy if Rei turns and explains the Higashi/UNS plan)
Set it up to take advantage of Langorn's forces coming to our aid

As for gravity's pull finishing their job, that's why the operation is a tricky one. Jamming radar will also affect the nuke guidance systems. Once you do that any nukes are as much a danger to you as they are to the enemy if you want to be close enough to "spot" for them. We don't have authorisation to order one anyway.
Hmm... Wouldn't our shielding technology protect us from the harm of radiation?

Up to you guys to set it up, if A wins. I'll give choices. It'll be like defending Tjaru all over again, only instead of a psychic tower you're staring down a 20-km megalith!

edit: It protects the electronics from some frequency of radiation, but that doesn't mean you're nuke-proof. It'll still vaporize whatever's in the effective radius of the energy released... I think probably about a few hundred meters per nuke if it's entirely in vacuum. Bear in mind that spotting for the nuke doesn't mean the enemy can't shoot it down. The missile isn't going to dodge like a fighter craft.

Surely, this will be no problem! The Codex is well-known for its skills in planning ahead. :troll:

Well, I suppose it is Senya's duty to surpass his predecessor and prove himself worthy of Ean's legacy.:salute:That and Shulgi Prime's approval.
Speaking of Ean and Tjaru, how far into the text adventure did Senya get?

Wait, can't we just surf the nukes into the asteroid?
He's currently near the end of Tjaru, at Nabu's ultimatum.

Wow, what a coincidence.
Surely this is intentional?

So Shulgi needs to get an email account or a mobile phone. Any time we have any problem, we'll give him a call.

I suggest we preemptively buy a mobile phone and give it to Shulgi the next time we see him.

Say, if we could get a nuke to hit the colony, what would it do? Blow a hole in it, break it in two, etc?

In space it'd vape a hole in the wall, with the size depending on the yield of the warhead. If there's anyone inside they'd get sucked out into the vacuum. It probably wouldn't impact its trajectory all that much though. There's very little blast effect. You can do considerably more damage to break the colony once it's in the atmosphere, but that's pretty much the poster definition of Too Late, not to mention the effect of detonating multiple nukes in the stratosphere might not be that pretty either. You'd still need at least ten or more, and there's not much guarantee they'll definitely hit.

Nuking a colony in space is lethal to the inhabitants with just one or two warheads, but it doesn't actually slag the superstructure all that much to stop it from being a threat should they want to use it as a massive kinetic weapon.
