Do eeet.

Doooooo eeeet.

(just don't expect me to update as much as I usually do)

Chapter 1.

Cao Cao walks down the street; He chats with some guy.

--Cao%20Cao--%20000015.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000016.png

This is Cao Cao, styled Mengde. Our hero. If you do not know who he is I don't want to be your friend.

--Cao%20Cao--%20000018.png

This is Xu Shao, styled Zijiang. A government officer at the end of the Eastern Han dynasty who was known to be wise and a good judge of character.

--Cao%20Cao--%20000020.png

I just told you.

--Cao%20Cao--%20000021.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000022.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000027.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000028.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000032.png

One minute in and we are already going deep into Fanfic territory. If we are to believe, like, every single other source out there it was Cao Cao who did go to Xu Shao to have his character judged. It was easier said than done, as Xu Shao did kind of despise the man. After many gifts and nagging, and some would say coercion as well, Cao Cao managed to get Xu Shao to comply, and the rest is history. There are several different accounts of what Xu Shao did tell the man, but the general gist of it is that he would be an able, kind of mediocre, possibly quite insidious and sinister, subject in times of peace but a crafty and renowned, maybe treacherous, possibly quite cruel, great hero in times of chaos.

Guess which one will it be?

Hint: Peaceful times do not translate well into 800.000 words' novels.

--Cao%20Cao--%20000033.png

I just told you. Again.

--Cao%20Cao--%20000034.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000035.png

He did not read the novel. :(

--Cao%20Cao--%20000036.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000037.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000038.png

The game has three routes. The 'red' route, usually called the 'villain' or 'evil' route, is the usual tale of Cao Cao's AMBITION that we have in every other Koei game. The 'blue' route, usually called the 'hero' route, is... weird. Very, very weird. On it the game drops all pretenses and goes full speed ahead with the fanfictioning, but from what I heard it is kind of fun and WTF. I never saw much of it myself, most of my experience with the game has been following the 'red' route. If our choices do not manage to unlock either route by a certain point of the game we will instead follow the 'neutral' route, which is a variation of the 'red' one.

Do you see that bar, half red and half blue? That's our, say, morality indicator.

So, vote. Wait, did I say vote? I meant VOTE. No, scratch that. I meant VOTE.

Oh, yes. I almost forgot.

F.A.Q:

q1. Care to explain what the bleep is this about, Oh NyanNyan?

a1. SRPG. Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Cao Cao. I'll explain the rest as we go.

q2. Will you finish this, Oh NyanNyan?

a2. Dunno.

And I also almost forgot to ping RK47. :smug:

There you go. Try it. It's free.

Also, I will never get you dudes to vote, right? I mean, I have been doing Let's Play thingies for years and I can never get you to vote.

My heart? Broken.

And it is your fault. :(

Anyway, it is a very good game. But this is what you will be seeing most of the time:

Those big iso graphics are just for the story segments.

But do give it a try if you are into SRPGs. I love it. It's awesome.

Hero in turmoil, villain in peacetime Cao Cao is too common. Way too many works deal with that personality. But blue is somewhat funny if you've some knowledge of the time period and its characters. I'd say go blue.

Really.

Yingchuan was one of the focal points of the Yellow Turban Rebellion, a peasant revolt closely linked to Daoist sects. While the Three Kingdoms do not get established until much later it is with the Yellow Turban rebellion that the Romance of the Three Kingdoms does begin, and it is usually considered the unofficial begining of the Three Kingdoms period, even when the proper begining is around thirty six years later.

The imperial dudes attack.

--Cao%20Cao--%20000035.png

And then...

--Cao%20Cao--%20000036.png

Meet Liu Bei, styled Xuande. He's the designated good guy of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and almost every single thingie based or inspired by it, and until he manages to attain Teh Kongming the collective IQ of his merry gang of sworn brothers is in the single digits. He was a commoner distantly related to the Han, who made a living by weaving sandals and mats. He's also more Confucian than Confucius, except when he's not. Sometimes I get the impression Luo Guanzhong did like him about as much as I do.

--Cao%20Cao--%20000037.png

Meet Guan Yu, styled Yunchang. He was a cart pusher until he met Liu Bei and decided Eastern Han was in need of heroes, then he started kicking tail left and right as if he had been doing it since before he could crawl. Centuries after the Three Kingdoms he will resurface as both a Daoist deity and a Buddhist Bodhisattva. He and Teh Kongming are the only two Shu guys I kind of like, but Guan Yu I only like in small doses.

--Cao%20Cao--%20000038.png

Meet Zhang Fei, styled Yide. He's a big, dumb, ill tempered drunkard. Before meeting Liu Bei he was a farmer, a butcher, and a wine trader. Then he somehow became a killing machine. Go figure. In any case both Dynasty Warriors and some movies make him kind of cute in a teddy-of-war kind of way. That's pure fanfiction. In the book he's a brute, and that's it.

The three of them kind of met at a pub and decided to go kill some Yellow Turbans for XP to do their part in saving the Han and the people. They became sworn brothers in a peach garden, somehow managed to find some random village blacksmiths able to forge them legendary weapons, and off they went.

Yeah...

--Cao%20Cao--%20000039.png

As they ride to the Yellow Turban encampment the imperial dudes keep fighting at the southern gate.

--Cao%20Cao--%20000045.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000048.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000049.png

I may be a horrible person but any situation that includes Liu Bei, an encampment, and fire brings a smile to my lips.

--Cao%20Cao--%20000050.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000051.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000052.png

If anything, Koei's Liu Bei is even more stupid than the one in the novel.

--Cao%20Cao--%20000053.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000055.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000056.png

Still not suspicious.

--Cao%20Cao--%20000058.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000060.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000062.png

Liu Bei, the kind of guy that needs not-suspicious-guy's magic to set an enemy camp on fire.

An enemy camp made of wood and cloth.

Yeah...

Maybe he should ask Lu Xun for advise.

:troll:

This is a game about CAO CAO, for bleep's sake! Shut the bleep up and go away!

Anyway, two thingies:

Thingie the first, since you guys voted for route instead of that particular choice can I just go and make all the choices for the 'blue' route instead of putting each one up to vote?

Thingie the second, do we have an ETA on when will the spoiler tags be back? My life would be happier if I could just divide each update into several 'scenes' for ease of reading. I wanted to do the entire tutorial battle on this update, but see how big that shit is and Cao Cao did not even arrive yet!

That aside,

@ @abnaxus: OH GOD WHY!

I've always thought that plot wise, the blue route was more retarded than weird. Still, I'm going to vote for blue as well, because you haven't seen it, and because I think the blue route is slightly harder (and therefore better) than the red one.

This game is great. Can't remember what plot-line I followed (perhaps a mix?).

Any more like it? Turn-based strategies with C&C?

The Super Robot Wars games are turn based SRPGs, and most of them have plenty of C&C. Unfortunately, the vast majority of them were never released outside Japan, and nobody bothered to fan translate them either, so you're stuck with the few translated ones (@Gaiden, Judgement and OG) unless you can read Japanese.

Most of the branches in SRW are rather cosmetic. The SRW Z series with their secret requirements for an alternate route are an improvement, but it doesn't really give you as much C&C as, say, Tactics Ogre.

The SRW with the most C&C would be Masoukishin. None of the mainstream SRWs have anything that can compare.

All missions have a turn limit, and for a while it will be one of twenty turns. Usually they are more than enough. From what I remember you only have problems with the turn limit when you try to heavily change history. For example, winning the battle of Xingyang will leave you dangerously close to the turn limit, but doing it 'properly' will leave you with five or more turns to spare.

--Cao%20Cao--%20000093.png

Not suspicious at all, I tell you.

--Cao%20Cao--%20000102.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000103.png

And now we are finally in control. As you can see Cao Cao is a Level 3 Warlord. Liu Bei and his bros are all Level 7, and the imperial dudes are Level 1. In this battle we only control Cao Cao himself.

--Cao%20Cao--%20000117.png

The blue field indicates Cao Cao's range of movement. You can take action after moving but you can't move after taking action. He can only attack enemies that are inside one of the red squares at the moment of attacking. Different unit types have different, uhm, red square thingies. Units can also counterattack as long as the enemy unit attacking them is inside one of the red squares. You can cancel moves by right clicking before taking action, but you can't cancel actions.

You can also check both the movement range and the red squares of enemy and allied units in the same way you do your own. The movement range however can be confusing until you learn how it works. I'll explain a little bit: A unit can't pass next to an enemy unit. If there is a gate three squares wide and an enemy unit in the middle square Cao Cao would not be able to enter the city right away. You will have to finish that turn next to the enemy unit, and then in the next turn move inside the city. If the enemy unit where on one side of the gate the same would happen when you try to enter by the middle tile, but you would be able to enter normally through the tile in the opposite side. This can be pretty important when a battle turns into a messy melee and all of a sudden you are, like, why the bleep can't I move there?! My plan is ruined!

Anyway, the yellow question marks that did appear once the fire began indicate the unit in question is confused. As long as a unit is confused it can't do anything, not even counterattack.

--Cao%20Cao--%20000119.png

Before attacking an enemy dude you can check your chance to strike and how much damage you will do to the target. This is not a certainty, though. An enemy may block your attack and receive no damage, or the attacker may score either a critical hit or more than a single attack.

Cao Cao scores a critical hit, and thus when Liu Bei goes to finish the job the Yellow Turban dude has 26 HP instead of the expected 48 HP.

--Cao%20Cao--%20000123.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000124.png

*facepaw*

--Cao%20Cao--%20000125.png

There's not much more to explain for this first battle. The enemies are confused and even if they were not the super sworn bros would slaughter them all without breaking a sweat. And we also have a 'hidden' advantage in this mission beyond the super sworn bros being OP and the enemies being all confused: The game has a rock-paper-scisors system in place. Cavalry pwn foot soldiers, foot soldiers pwn archer, archers pwn cavalry. Other variables like level, equipment, buffs, special character rules, etc, can muddle the waters more than a little bit but in general it works like that. The part about archers beating cavalry in particular is pretty important in the early missions as you have only one, then two, archer generals, the enemy uses lots and lots of cavalry, and the difference in damage between 'smack them with footsoldiers' and 'turn them into pincushions' is BIG.

Anyway, the two guys in the middle of the camp, the ones we have to kill, are not Level 1 Yellow Turbant dudes but Magicians. They have some debuffs and the Poison spell.

--Cao%20Cao--%20000133.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000134.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000135.png

The Poison spell not only does damage over time for a random number of turns but also an amount of damage on impact. I don't really use Magicians if I can help it so I don't know much about them beyond the basics, I like the other 'pure casters' more. In the rock-paper-scissors thingie pure casters (Geomancers, magicians, strategists, etc) get pretty much pwned by everyone in REAL MAN COMBAT. This does not apply to hybrid casters like Warlords (Cao Cao, Liu Bei, etc), whatever Diao Chan class is, and others.

Anyway, Cao Cao charges the tents on the lower right corner of the camp. When you finish a turn on a building the character will loot it. In most cases you will obtain recovery items of some kind. Ending a turn in a building will also heal the character a bit.

And that's pretty much all for this battle. Or, say, slaughter.

--Cao%20Cao--%20000182.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000183.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000184.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000189.png

--Cao%20Cao--%20000190.png

When Zhang Bao falls we obtain a Book of Healing. I asume this book to be the Taiping Jing the three brothers who would later start the Yellow Turban rebellion (Zhang Jue, Zhang Bao, and Zhang Liang) received from the immortal of the southern lands at the beginning of Teh Romance, but that's just me. A character equiping the book will be cleansed of all status effects at the end of each turn. It's not terribly useful.

This is a good time to mention that anything your allies loot both from enemies and from buildings goes to you just as if you had looted it yourself, so you don't have to worry about your 'allies' stealing your shinies.

Anyway,

Yay, spoiler tags are working again. Updates will be longer from now on.

Any more like it? Turn-based strategies with C&C?

Strategy games usually scare me so I don't know that many. The only ones I can think of are the Devil Survivor games, but they are not that similar outside of 'Turn based battles with different routes to pick from and a few optional thingies based on your choices and mad skillz.' :?

Yay! This is a really good game, and I had forgotten all about it. Re-downloading and replaying time!

Also, LOL @ your avatar.
