Get an N64 (emu), play Micro Machines on a TV with controllers instead. Possibly some incarnation of Bomberman or Worms. If you're hung up on the LAN thing, play some sort of RTS that nobody (or everybody) in the group is really good at. You could go with one of the classic deathmatch FPS games as well (Quake 3, UT Instagib) but in my experience there's always one guy in the group who dominates the other two and ruins the fun. Micro Machines or some simple RTS (Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge comes to mind, even though that's basically "grab mucho resources early on"), everybody can pick up on enough for some fun within a single day.
What's the plan? If you want a sit-together game-thing, I really recommend controllers and a couch, especially if beer will be involved.

There's a nice modification for Half-Life called SvenCoop. It allows playing original HL campaign as well as many custom maps in cooperative mode. It's loads of fun.

When it comes to RTS games WH 40k Dawn of War is pretty nice. And if you seek a fun game for only two players I'd recommend Star Wars: Empire at War in galactic conquest mode. Destroying whole planets with the Death Star ftw!

Doom Co-op is a fun little romp. Three people could do nicely on Nightmare difficulty. System Shock 2 is amazing co-op, but a bitch to set up. But it is fun as can be, especially if each player specializes in a certain field. It really captures a sort of special operations feel that many games made specifically for that have a hard time doing. You could try the Infinity Engine games LAN-style, but I don't know how that would work out...it might not be worth it.

If you aren't adverse to hot-seat PC games, Worms Armageddon, Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and the like all do well like that.

Yeah, I was gonna second Doom. If you play with Zdoom there's a lot of neat options you can use that make the game a lot more fun. Here are my settings (add to command line), it's basically you play coop, you lose half your ammo when you die, 20% team damage, you keep all keys and guns, it's on Ultra Violence with Fast Monsters turned on (most custom maps are retardedly hard with respawning monsters so I don't use Nightmare).
Replace X with number of total players (in your case 3).

-host X -skill 4 -fast +dmflags 270909444 +dmflags2 1538 -netmode 0 +teamdamage 0.2

Me and my friends basically have to sit around in this lab waiting for a class a few days a week to start with nothing except three somewhat old computers (as in they can run Half-ilfe decently) that are connected through LAN.

I thought of Doom too but they don't like Doom. Or any "2.5D" FPS.

And we're all basically "Starcraft'd out" at this point.

I tried playing Half-Life but the maps seem kind of big and most of the time we're just running around looking for each other. I guess Quake has some smaller maps that might be better, but I don't know if Quake 3 will even run on this machine. We have to play Half Life in software mode and I don't think Quake 3 is that forgiving.

You could try Age of Empires 2 (but make sure you have The Conquerors expansion installed too). It's a mighty fine game and playing against actual people makes it even better. Ah, I feel nostalgia rushing in...

Also, here's an idea: try System Shock 2 Co-op. You each get to pick a different class, that way you could sweep every area clean. Plus, SS2 is one brilliant game.

Shooters are a bit harder to recommend when there are only 3 people involved but you could try the 1on1 DM maps in UT2004. Those matches are always adrenaline filled.

Have fun mate!

Quake 1 on DM1 or DM4 could work. Or you could just throw in some bots.

Rise of Nations is awesome in LAN as well. Way back me and some mates used to play a game called Death Rally on the comps at school. Dunno if there's any chance in hell of that working on a newish computer though. Finally, if you're patient and like card/strategy games, Chaos Overlords can be a blast to play on LAN while doing other stuff, pretty fast-paced for a TBS too.

HoMM3 is an awesome timekiller, same with worms(currently playing worms 1 between classes) micro machines gets old fast imo

if you're into strategy games Age of empires is great, it's a lot slower than starcraft, which is good for casual play :P and if you are in a really lame mood you can spend hours spamming wololoooooooo(i should stop smoking weed :P)

if you haven't played diablo till you puked(i get sick of it when I reach den of evil nowadays) it's a good choice, had a lot of good times playing it with 2-3 guys in my early lan days.

And I'd suggest dungeon siege as well, I know a lot of people hate is(and for good reason), but if you team up against some creeps there's no way in hell you should be able to take down, every fight becomes a bossfight, where you need to make new tactics(usually a lot of kiting) it's very challenging and good fun - but for the love of god don't play it like it's intended to be played then it's just a really horrid diablo clone :P

You could always do prep work for your class... otherwise I would recommend Garou: Mark of the Wolves, one of the best 2d fighters ever, its for neogeo so you will need to emulate.

You guys could watch hetero porn together and try to pretend that you're not flaming gay for each other.

Maybe if you stopped being so gay your dad would finally come home.

Metal slug is gear fun, although you can only play 2 player on a neo geo emulator.

If they can run it i'd recommend Jedi Academy, play Jedi Power Battle mode. Its like the fight from the end of episode 1. Two guys controlling weaker jedi light sabre fighting with a single opponent with more health and stronger force powers. Download the realisitc weapons mod as well and you've got a really great game.

Duke 3D. Better yet, Blood. Stock up on spiked tomato juice and keep in mind the rule to physically batter spotted campers. That's just what makes LAN so fucking good. Choice and consequence, Fallout-through-the-window style.

Coop in System Shock 2 (+multiplayer patch, +better textures pack, +better characters pack), I had damn lots of fun playing it with a friend. Might be a little too easy for 3 people, so make sure you play in hardest mode.

How is it that nobody mentioned it so far?
