I see it more simple.
Considering the mid-level publishers have almost disapeared, in most case, you have an Indie game or a AAA mainstream publisher product.
If they aren't a AAA maintream publisher product, they are indie, no matter the quality.
The shades of gray, the medium sized company, barelly exist and could be skipped, or be included with indie.

Voted for several on that list but the ones that deserve it most are Heroine's Quest, Lords of Xulima, Dragonfall and Underrail.

Edit: Also voted for Expeditions: Conquistador and Driftmoon and so should you.

Pillars of Eternity is considered as non-indie ?

This is a kickstarter game devellopped by a devellopper that isn't a publisher.
There is a publisher involved at some point, but that publisher isn't big and doesn't hold the IP.

There is no exact widely accepted definition of what constitutes an "indie game".[4][5][6][7] However, indie games generally share certain characteristics. Indie games are developed by individuals, small teams, or small independent companies;[5][8][9] such companies are often specifically formed for the development of one specific game. Typically, indie games are smaller than mainstream titles.[9] Indie game developers are generally not financially backed by video game publishers (as these are risk averse and prefer big budget games)[10] and usually have little to no budget available.[4][5][7][11][12] Being independent, indie developers do not have controlling interests[6] or creative limitations[5][13][7] and do not require publisher approval[4] as mainstream game developers usually do.[14] Design decisions are thus also not limited by the allocated budget.[13] Furthermore, smaller team sizes increase individual involvement.[15] Small teams, scope, and no creative restrictions have made indie games known for innovation, creativity, and artistic experimentation.[4][9][15][16][17][18][19] Developers limited in ability to create graphics can rely on gameplay innovation.[20] Both classic game genres and new gameplay innovation have been seen.[17] However, being "indie" does not imply that the game focuses on innovation.[9][21] In fact, many games attributed the "indie" label can be of poor quality and may not be made for profit.[7]

As long as the awards are consistent with their own criteria for selection, but apparently "what is an indie game" is as nebulous as "what is an rpg".
Remove Shadowrun thanks, the IP holder is Microsoft and game development and design were influenced by that as revealed by the developers themselves.

Underrail. No question about it
I did too, but i doesn't feel right. It wasn't released yet and should be amongs the next year contestants.

^ that's 2013

As you can see there are 2 sections: released and upcoming. So you voting for an unreleased game won't cause the universe to explode. Last year's winner was After Reset - a game without a playable demo. Any reason why it shouldn't have been Underrail?

And yes, I do think that Underrail is a better game than AoD, but AoD deserves to be in top 100 on that particular site. Your votes won't make anyone undeservedly successful. They will merely increase visibility and awareness, so don't be stingy with your votes since there is no limit anyway.

Codex 2013 Codex 2014 PC RPG Website of the Year, 2015 Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire MCA Serpent in the Staglands Dead State Divinity: Original Sin Project: Eternity Torment: Tides of Numenera Wasteland 2 Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 BattleTech Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire
It seems to be more of a popularity contest than a proper "best games" contest anyway. So if you're excited for a not-yet-released title, it's okay to vote for it.

jeez, NEO Scavenger counts as 2014? I guess it is getting "released" next week or something. I think I bought it back in...2012? then again in 2013 when it got onto Steam?

it gets my vote, just because I think the aesthetic and taciturn storytelling of the beta were really strong and of the few other games on that list I've actually played none made quite as harpoon-hook an impression. excited for it to finally get released.

Yeah there should a closed higher-tier backer alpha. But the communication of the team is very limited. Fuck knows if everything's allright.

Underrail gets better once you complete the first quests but I still find it way less enjoyable than AoD. Besides the things I've mentioned before there are less viable character builds here than in AoD. But the very good thing about this game is that it's cheap (then again I find AoD cheap too, considering how many hours of entertainment it provides).

Underrail is not too bad of course. But it is really difficult (for me at least), the text is hard to read on big monitors and there is a lot of text in the game (why not to let people choose the font size), very uncomfortable controls, lifeless characters. Anyway it is not even out yet, I am sure they will improve most of it.

The first vote is for top 100, the second vote is to determine a winner (or top 5) in each category. AoD is under 'unreleased/role-playing'. Your support will be much appreciated.

Underrail isn't released. That's kind of a dick mistake on part of IndieDB.

Which is why it's in the unreleased category? Because it's not released?
