I only found about about this game because of a message left by Nichols on an Evil Avatar forum - go Nichols! Go the web! Go technology!

When I went to the website and saw in big letters ' May 6th 2006 FREE Download!' and at the same time saw a very professional web page I thought there was a catch!

I checked further and download the game. While I was waiting for the 60mb download I looked at the FAQ and had a quick look at the walkthrough. Wow, it looked interesting!

Upon installing an starting the game, I couldn;t believe what i was seeing! A professional looking game that wasn't orc bashing or wwII or sci-fi, but something very original! I have played it for an hour and decided to come here and leave tons of kudos before going back to it (needed the bathroom anyway!)!!

To Zero-Sum - you guys rock! This could have been a commercial release, but I do know there would have been a cost to that, money wise. But gee whiz, this game just shocked me on so many levels! Literally 90 minutes ago I did not know anything about this game, and while web searching for Star Control 2 game information I came across a message from Nichols pointing out not all great games are available on the store shelf and listed 3 of his favourite 'non commercial' CRPG's! Prelude was one of the game he lauded! ! How right he was!

So thanks again for all the hard work you must have put into this, thanks for making it free and even at this early stage, hope you continue programming! :) As a sort of preview 9as I have not played it a lot yet) I give this game 8.7 out of 10!!!!

One of the most overrated games ever. Low production values, from graphics to game controls. Annoyingly slow battles, ten times worse than that other waste of time, Wizardry 8.

Mr. Vazquez,

We are all truly sorry that you do not like P to D, and that it plays "too slow".... but did it ever occur to you that not all of us have ADD ( that's Attention Deficit Disorder). If you like the kiddie-button-mashing-games-that-require-no-thought, that's fine - stick to playing your Nintendo, and please quit bashing this game.

For those of us who actually like games that require some strategy, thinking, and planning we prefer games like P to D and Wiz 8. Most of us grew up on button-mashing games, and have since then matured. Also, this game does actually require some patience of mind, and some level of reading and remembering above the grammar school level. We appreciate your comments, now please go to www.nintendo.com and find games appropriate to your skill level / age. Thank you.

Hmm... not to be a bitch vazquez, but to me, to refer to a game that has been widely praised by one website (this one,) mentioned in passing by Tim Cain once, reviewed by no mainstream publications, and bought by almost no one as "one of the most overrated games ever" might be called overstatement. It might also be called a lot of other things, but I'll be charitable. Anyway, sorry you didn't like the game.

Thanks humorguy for the praise and Nichols for the promotion, both are much appreciated. Yeah, we released the game as freeware because at this point we just want people to play the damn thing. It's thrilling to see that people are doing just that, and enjoying it to boot.

Hey, liking Nintendo doesn't mean you can't enjoy Prelude to Darkness too.

Free shit is still shit.

Ok, I'm being harsh, but it's the truth. Why hide it, just to be nice? Because it's free?

The engine is poor.

This game's control/interface is crap. I must use the camera all the time to be able to click where I want.
I guess 3D games are just hard, and stuff.

I zoomed all the way out, raised the camera to the directly-overhead view, and then did 3 clicks down (on the camera arrows), creating an isometric view similar to Fallout, Diablo, the Infinity Engine games, etc. Then surveying the field from different angles was just a matter of moving the camera left or right, mostly after clicking the button that centers the viewport on the party.

But yeah, it's confusing. Like Windows.

The controls aren't very responsive. Nor accurate.
For me, the controls were very responsive and accurate. Especially when I was fighting those dark creatures in real-time... oh wait.

I might give it a try then....

Its too bad that it wasn't apparently a financial success. I really do think the "bugs" really were the main reason as I saw the game and thought about getting it a few times in the past but had heard it was quite buggy so stayed away.

Looks like their strategy now is to give it away in hopes of creating a buzz.....maybe that way they can make a sequel that they can sell for profit.

Hope so, because its the kind of game I enjoy.
