The "enhanced" PC version of Final Fantasy VII, which is the same as last year's PC re-release, is now out on Steam. The "enhancements" to the game include Cloud saves, achievements, and the "Character Booster"; the price is $11.99/€12.99/£9.99.

The RPG classic FINAL FANTASY VII returns to PC, now with brand new online features!
    • Achievements – Whether you’re a seasoned FINAL FANTASY VII veteran or exploring this RPG classic for the very first time, show off your in-game accomplishments and put your gaming skills to the test with 36 brand new achievements to unlock. Share your profile with friends online to find out who is the ultimate FINAL FANTASY fan.'
    • Cloud Saves – If you’re away from home or simply using a different computer to play, enjoy FINAL FANTASY VII wherever you are. With cloud save support in FINAL FANTASY VII you can continue your game progress right where you left off (Requires Internet Connection. Saves can only be transferred between a maximum of 3 computers at any one time).
    • Character Booster – Find yourself stuck on a difficult section or lacking the funds to buy that vital Phoenix Down? With the Character Booster you can increase your HP, MP and Gil levels to their maximum, all with the simple click of a button, leaving you to enjoy your adventure.
    • Optimized for PC – FINAL FANTASY VII has been updated to support the latest hardware and Windows Operating Systems.
Unfortunately, from what I've heard, the Steam version still requires you to sign up for an account on Square Enix's website. You have been warned.

The Character Booster feature sounds wonderfully retarded.

I wonder if using the character booster gives you the Button of Awesome achievement. Because it should.

I've heard conflicting reports you can turn the Cloud Saving feature off. Not sure if that's true or not.

Also I can't believe nobody sneaked any puns in the Cloud Saves paragraph.

Yes it uses the same shitty music the original PC version used back in the day. There are fan mods to replace it with the PSX music. Very lazy re-release though.

If I'm not mistaken, you could get Soundfonts that improved that version's music. It was released on the tail end of the Sound Blaster AWE ISA sound card era.

My god, this is is probably one of the ugliest games in existence. Still, much better than any FF above 10...

It's just an unhidden cheat feature. No need to type a command into a console or use a trainer or whatever.

A lot of people have been having problems connecting to the Square DRM service and have been unable to play the game. Absolutely retarded idea to require extra DRM in addition to Steam.

I also feel it's rather expensive for a game that's 15 years old. Still, it's currently #2 in the top sellers list, so I guess the demand is there regardless.

Boosts? I thought the only way to die was by fighting the optional Weapons. Even Sephiroth refuses to kill with his finishing move, Supernova. Back in '98 I burned through FF7 in about 20 hours and only had level 2 limits and the 3 behamuts for summons. I actually love this game though. I loved the world, characters, music, wacky mini games and optional challenges as much as the next fanboy. In many ways, I'd say FF7 was the Citizen Kane of JRPGs... In many ways, I consider FF7 to be a better game than Chrono Trigger. FF6 is better than either, but I don't think it had a real effect on gaming, and therefore cannot be a C. Kane.

Easily one of the worst JRPGs I ever played. Why exactly this infantile garbage got to be lauded as the Pinnacle of video game storytelling is unfathomable.

No, really, what is the appeal? The writing is poor, the main characters insufferable, the titanic emotional climax with the death of a central character falls flat due to how poorly written and annoying said character was and it has Mr. T as a support character.

Xenogears is practically unknown compared to FF7 and is yet ten trillion times better in all aspects. Why does FF7 deserve praise?

It was one of the first games released on the PSX, as such it was the first Final Fantasy game many people encountered. Public perception shifted over time from the Final Fantasy most people were familiar with to "the best one"

A lot of people who owned Playstations never owned a Snes.

"Cloud Saves feature is unfortunately bugged, as Aeris still dies in this version."

    Better?

According to the description it only maxes your HP, MP and gold. You still have to grind for your levels (to raise other stats) and materia levels.

So yeah, it's kind of retarded. It doesn't actually let you one-hit everything, which would be useful for lazy veterans who just want to see the story again. It just makes sure it's very hard to die unless you're woefully underleveled.

Seems like if you don't log into Squeenix's servers (playing offline) you don't get to use that (hence "Requires Internet connection")

Its an emotionally engaging game and highly popular amongst female gamers ,as surprising as it seems, they are the target audience in japan for rpgs . There's better and more complex jrpg but how can they compete with aeris and cloud romance ?

    Hyperbole much?

    1. Cloud follows a modified "Hero of a 1000 Faces" model where the modification is that Cloud is a loser and has mental problems. It's emo crap at it's best before emo crap was the norm. Just because you didn't like him doesn't mean millions of others don't.
    2. The atmosphere of FF7 hits home for a lot of people. It's kind of modern/ post apocalyptic and I think it's fresh without seeming too foreign.
    3. FF7 has one of the most beloved soundtracks of all time. I think it's Uematsu's best.
    4. Despite all the drama, FF7 always has a wackiness just around the corner without being the most prevailing aspect of the game. Xenogears, on the other hand, is so mired in its own exposition that many players felt like they were being preached to.
    5. FF7 has iconic character designs that are still remembered and copied to this day, while Xenogears has forgettable ones that look like fucking everything ever seen. People still like Sephiroth because of his character model.
    6. FF7 was simple, easy and fast. While this is a drawback for most of us Codexers, it allowed a far higher percentage of players to actually finish the game.
    7. The writing IS simple, but for a console in 1997, it was deep enough. It was the perfect JRPG at the perfect time. In many ways it has aged poorly, but that's irrelevant for people who grew up with the genre.

I personally wouldn't put FF7 in my top 10 JRPG's but I can certainly understand why many would.
