Over there.
Gearbox Studios has granted a group of enthusiasts permission to remake the developer's classic first person shooter Duke Nukem 3D. The group led by Frederik "Fresch" Schreiber, is rebuilding the game from the ground up using Unreal Engine 3.

Gearbox has granted the group a personal non-commercial license that allows the enthusiasts to use the Duke Nukem name providing the project remains free and there's no intent to sell it in the future.

There's a short YouTube video linked in the article showing the very beginning of the first level in an old/new comparison. Looks interesting.

Probably going to take 20 years and still only get as far as episode 1 if they're lucky, but it's very cool that Gearbox greenlighted this. Normally the best you can hope for from game companies is they look the other way.

Codex 2012 Strap Yourselves In Codex Year of the Donut Codex+ Now Streaming! Dead State Project: Eternity Codex USB, 2014 Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag. Pathfinder: Wrath
I just hope that they do strippers right, God forbid they look like females from Arcania.

The think is I never understand projects like this, isnt it better to spend time making something new instead remaking old stuff?

maybe thats why they green-lighted it, it will never be completed.

give it a couple of years and then core members will start to drop off because of RL, then ultimately it will fade out like the other 100+ different projects have done during the years.

Does this mean Gearbox now have the rights to Duke Nukem 3D?

That sounds kinda odd to me.

It does not seem odd if you remember 3DRealms went bankrupt.

Why the fuck are they bothering? Duke3D already has an OpenGL port and 3D models. If they really want to make it even more next-gen, just make better models and maybe high-res textures... oh wait there ARE already highres textures too..

Meh, it will never be completed anyway.

Neat Idea, but Team Gizka will release TSLRP before this ever is finished.

Guess they want to continue on with the meme of Duke Nukem never coming out.. :smug:

Would be great, but modders today are not the modders of yesteryear-- they never have an original idea and actually finish 1 out of 10000 projects they start.

This Duke proof-of-concept shit looks cool, but a mapper could make it literally in 15 minutes if the texture assets and skybox were pre-existent.

Why the fuck would anyone want to play anything using Unreal Engine 3?

If the work made doesn't make above some ammounter, Epic lets you use the engine for free.

That's a good argument for making games with it, not for playing games made with it.

The last update on their site is almost a year old (didn't check their twit) so it's definitely vaporware.
