Hi, folks.

We are a russian indie-developers team Sun Dogs, and we're making a roguelike-like story-driven game, that's influenced by Star Control 2 and Space Rangers.

It's a story-driven space roguelike-like, that's influenced by Star Control II, Prospector and Space Rangers.
Main plot takes place in not very bright future, when humanity had wasted all of the Earth resources and was desperate to find a new source of them outside of their planet. The Player - captain of the Aurora-2 starship, have to find a planet which will become an Earths colony. You have to explore the space and planet, communicate with aliens (or fight them) and do a text quests. And all this while exploring a large procedurally generated systems and planets. There is nothing to stop the player, if he wants just kill aliens and fly through galaxy.

Game features:

- Randomly generated space, full of mysteries;

- encounters with alien races;

- turn-based combat(in space and on the planets);

- huge variety of text quests;

- researches, trading, ship customizing;

- and a lot more.

When I saw the thread title I was hoping it's an open source version of Aurora/Odyssey Engine so I can bitchslap RPGs in a matter of minutes.

It's common, it's overused, and it's not going to Google well. Come up with a better name!

Come up with a better name!

Our game has only 0.4.1 alpha-version. Maybe we'll change the name in the future.

And by using a "common" name you're trying to gain publicity?

No, It's just a coincidence. "Aurora" just sounds good. Goddes of new dawn, new dawn for all Earth. Poetic, eh? And also, our lead-programmer and founder of the project is from St-Petersbourg. "Aurora" has a multiple symbolic connections with the town.

Looks quite interesting to me - I'll give the alpha a try for sure.

You're welcome. Don't forget to leave a feedback, please. :desu:

That shitty Soviet song? "Cruiser Aurora, what are you dreaming about?"

Unless I'm missing something, you guys are hilarious.

The song is about the Cruiser "Aurora", yes. One of the St.-Petersburg symbols. :russia:

So the connection might be to the ship itself. Not to the song, that you're reffering to.

Folks, please. Let's discuss the game, not counties and songs.
I agree - the pointless nitpicking about the name Aurora is counter-productive and not an interesting discussion.

Anyway, I played the game briefly last night and my first impression is very good. For an alpha, the presentation of the game is in a surprisingly polished state. I can see where things need a bit of refinement, such as some text getting visibly cut off in some dialog boxes, and sometimes awkward phrasing (due to translation issues maybe?). Also it would be nice to have the text size in dialogues be adjustable to something a bit larger for larger resolution screens (I'm running on 1920 x 1200). At the moment the dialogue text is very tiny on my screen.

I still have a lot I haven't done - so I'll report back when I've dug into the gameplay a bit more. But so far, this seems very promising!

Thanks for your feedback.

We will think about doing something with the text size.
Keep playing. If some problem will accure - just write about it here.

Ok, folks, new version is here.

Version 0.4.3

List of changes:

1) Module for space probes
2) HP of new wild-life enemies is now hidden. Damage to previously discovered monsters are higher
3) Now you can loose a crew member when your ship is damaged by explosions
4) Updated game engine LWJGL 2.9.3. This should solve problem with resolution on retina-displays, and possibly some other issues
5) Regenerated monsters on planets
6) Some new lines of privat dialogues
7) Saves are moved to Users/<username>/AuroraRL.

Old saves will work with this version. You just should move them there.

Zip-version for Linux, Mac and Win too - https://bitbucket.org/e_smirnov/aurora/downloads/Aurora-0.4.3.zip

How about a special demo with integrated bitcoin miner for additional support?

We are not relying on bitcoins, really. First of all - none of us are used to a concept of it, and second - bitcoin will be banned in Russia eventually.

I expected it to be about Aurora shooting.

What gives? Aurora is to common of a "name" - so you shall not expect enything particullar.

I'll be pretty laconic. New version.

What's new in 0.5.0:
  1. New tutorial – at game start player now can choose an optional tutorial mission in a Solar system
  2. New quests: Heritage and Quarantine
  3. Modding support. Currently modding documentation is available only in russain at http://ru.aurora-roguelike.wikia.com/wiki/Быстрый_старт_по_созданию_модов
  4. Humanity upgrades – now player can distribute points received for research between 3 branches of humanity development. These branches unlock new ship upgrades, humanity expands into outer space, major changes of life on Earth and much more.
Windows installer (you should better uninstall old version manually if you have it, as installer sometimes fails to perform correct update):

https://bitbucket.org/e_smirnov/aurora/downloads/AuroraRL_windows_0_5_0.exe
Cross-platform zip version (requires java):
https://bitbucket.org/e_smirnov/aurora/downloads/Aurora-0.5.0.zip

Please report bugs at
https://bitbucket.org/e_smirnov/aurora/issues

As usualy, we will be glad to answer your questions. And leave a feedback, please.

Even though I don't believe in motherland when it comes to vidya, anything Prospector-like is a blessing. I hope you finish the game, men.

Played it long ago, but dropped early due to something bug-related, can't even remember now. Will give new version a shot.
