Around 400 swatting cases happen each year and the consequences can be deadly.

:what:

Didn't realize it was such a widespread problem. People are going to cry about excessive force but I'd have thought that the risk of a SWAT raid going badly was way higher than 0.25%.

Do they not punish the bitches that do this or something? Stuff like this only spreads if people are getting away with it.

Both players should be convicted for manslaughter to set an example. The cop, an investigation is in order.
Eh the guy who just made up a random address really shouldn't be in the same boat as the dude who called it in.
My opinion isn't set in stone, but he's also responsible for someone losing their life. The other guy bears more blame, though. I wonder what happened that made the cop shoot the guy. That's the biggest question mark for me. Maybe he wasn't unarmed. I don't take news reports at face value, but I can't completely disregard them either.

The main takeaway is that swatters need to get an example set to scare people from doing shit like this.

In general I'd agree, but it sounds like the guy who gave a wrong address did it knowing the other was going to swat it. That's still pretty bad. If you're setting up a prank drug deal, the drug dealers get there and get pissed that it was fake and kill someone, you're definitely guilty of manslaughter. He wouldn't be guilty of anything if he had put a fake address on his facebook or something and the guy who called it in merely got it from there, but it's different if he specifically gave an existing address to knowingly put someone else at risk.

There are degrees of manslaughter and considerable discretion in sentencing. Guy who just gave fake address shouldn't get too much jail time if anything.

Codex 2014 Make the Codex Great Again! Grab the Codex by the pussy
Is it too much to hope that the Call of Duty servers themselves get shut down permanently because of this?

This is first and foremost the fault of the community (for not cracking down on swatters) so it's the community that should be punished. Hard.
