Because the logical step from necromancy is necrophilia and boiware hasn't yet figured out a way to incorporate that fetish in a tastefully diverse and inclusive manner.
RPGs tend to draw from fiction, that's why there's so much high fantasy, so... are there any good fantasy novels where the (villain) protagonist is a necromancer?

I love diablo 2, loved BGII, etc. But I cant find many games that involve summons legions of the dead and making them work for me. why
NegromancyNecromancy should have been the perfect way to make RPGs more racially inclusive and diverse. Just imagine a negro (or even better, a negress) controlling an army of pale zombies with empty, Swedish looks on their faces, murmuring "gilla olika, gilla olika". That would be Black Power!
Evocation is flashy and cool.Compared to other magic schools, it's actually quite common. On the other hand, illusionism, abjuration, and transmuters? Now that's discrimination!
In any event, it's probably just because "magic" is now associated with wizardry dudes casting fireballs and garbage like that, so that's what people expect, and that's what they get.
you can summon undeads and cast spells that drain health and stats. Wtf more do you want? Becoming undead? You can become a vampire and NPCs will react to that. You can wear armor made of bones.

I just thought there was going to be more to it. Back then I didn't know there were 10 factions or so in the game, so I would discover them naturally by playing. I did find all the factions at the time, and I was finding so many secrets and things in the game such as books or NPC chatter that implied there were more secrets and this was one of them. There are a few books on Necromancy in the game, and I think one of them even gives a recipe on how to raise dead or something, IIRC. I expected maybe an official Necromancer questline (as in, multiple quests), perhaps a Necromancer faction. I also thought that maybe you could take dead bodies you see and raise them. Maybe become Undead, although yes, you can become a Vampire (didn't realize there were Vampire quests until years later. They hid those well enough. Side note but I'd love to see more weird "secrets" like that in future RPGs.)
In short, I just expected it to be more "official" and more to it. While it was no big deal-breaker or anything, it was a disappointment. But the game was and is still amazeballs.
