I found this:
There is an uhm, "way", to force an auto-save in Ironman. I've ALT-F4'ed out of combats because I had to no more time to play this session, and every time it would load very shortly before the combat.

Can't confirm though, since I'm waiting for the GOG version.
Yes ALT-F4 during combat means you will load exactly before the battle. You can change equipment and stuff but the moment you press the "play" button, you will get into the battle you were into.
You can also recruit some guys in the city check their stats and then alt f4 and it should bring you to the last autosave(before entering city). But didn't check this recently so do it on your own risk.

They just swarmed one end of my line and took out the guy at the end in the opening.

After that I suppose you learned the value of the "Underdog" perk? Guarding flanks is serious business. You need a more defense oriented merc for that job, with underdog being the build's core perk. Riposte also shines in this situation. I stand by what I said: compared to the alternatives (eg. Skeletons) Direwolves are izy money.

Is it just me or did the new patch change something about how often you get raided during a caravan run?

Agreed. In fact, I'll edit my mini-guide to clarify that by FEDEX I mean delivery by foot. Caravans went from being relatively safe to becoming a complete clusterfuck. IMHO, the constant ambushing needs some toning down.

Dunno, I just did a caravan run all across the map for like 1k gold, with no encounters what so ever. I still think it's just random

It is.
Most combat encounters as caravan escorts come from ambushes and raiders. Sometimes they team up for one battle, sometimes you have 5 battles one after another.
>people say that map generation isn't important
>pro tip - it is
Still there is occasionally a party spawned specially for this contract to fuck your shit up. Usually 3 skull ones.
You can easily see it because it chase you and ignore other caravans/peasants/patrols.

I've started my first serious campaign. After reading such horror stories about map generation, my map has a furs-producing, a copper-producing, a salt and copper-producing village, and a big ass city, all in a day's march range. This game loves me.

And I love it back

Started a run on expert since I got bored with the long 30 vs 30 fights. Cool thing I noticed is the gold for betraying your employer isn't nerfed that much compared to contract gold, makes the choice very compelling.

So you just need around 420 tries to secure headshoot.
Good Luck. Remember to report findings.

I bet you love unskippable tutorial missions like all of us.

I hit him in the head on the 4th (RNG is a funny thing) try while generating new run - hit was for 58, his hp freezed at 30%. While an expected outcome, it would have been a nice touch.

What do you look for in a map? I'm guessing cities close together so you can defend them in crises easily, but I only got noble wars so far so it didn't matter much.

Difficulty of contracts, non-contract locations and roaming parties scales differently. Contract difficulty scales with time, the strength of your roster, the difficulty rating (skulls), the type of contract, and some factors specific to the type of contract – for example, escort contracts are generally more difficult the longer you travel, as it increases the chance to run into enemies. Contract reward also scales with the difficulty rating (skulls) of contracts, which is why it offers some indication as to the contract difficulty.

So it looks like I was right.

Nice factions with nice emblems and well positioned, good net of roads, plenty of ports for coast cities, cities fairly close to each other and good trading hub. Also no separated settlements(no to islands), do not like fiords and no to much swamps.

If there's only one large city (harbor or no harbor), you're in for a very tough time when trying to make money off commodity trading.
I do like keeping harbor city under 'raided' status for excellent sales price.

But raided is bad for selling stuff.
Ambushed trade roads is what you want.
yeah that's the one trade route with brigand contract. got it mixed up.
They kept offering the contract, so I just say I'll think about it and hope it doesn't go away.
The profit margins are pretty incredible.
Selling away of gear is at 22% of value.

Yeah I have allied city where i can drop trade goods and loot that often have it.
Good to have reserve cash.
I had some bad battle and lost 6 guys with all their weapons and armors. If not spare cash I would be in deep shit.

IMO they should add a 'warehouse/bank' in some large cities.
Deposited money gain interest every month. It creates a measure of 'investment' for the player. If the city is burned down, the bank deposit goes bust. When the city is 'raided/under siege' it is impossible to make a withdrawal.

Deposited goods in warehouse is good for stockpiling commodity that has 'no great demand' yet or spare gear you may need in the future. You pay a fixed cost for quarterly, half year, or an annual storage. Failure to pay past 2 weeks of rental due means they seize your goods.

I'd also add in some 'mini-crises' like a famine in some part of the world or a cult rising on swampland villages. Failure to deal with these, and some settlements might just migrate (facilities shut down) or become hostile. Abandoned settlements might be repopulated if you succeed in escorting a migrant caravan back to the abandoned site. It's like Pirates!

I also wish there's some 'investment' mechanics where you can improve a city patrol or commodity production capability. Repairing a burned down farm isn't cheap, but it should be do-able. A simple example would be: without investment, a city would rebuild a burned down farm in 120 days. But if you invest some gold, you can have it accelerated to make it rebuild in less days. I definitely would pay to get back a burned down harbor because I really want those fishing nets!

Of course these investments also grants renown and relations gain with the faction/settlements- making it possible for the company to 'accelerate' its renown gain other than fulfilling ambitions or farming easy battles.

A new faction should also be introduced - why not have the Wild Man villages?

Yeah, exploring the wilds woulds definitely be more interesting if there was some kind of a wildling population there. But at the moment, due to the way the enemy sites work, they'd be wiped out before you ever get to making a visit.

I thought I got lucky with world gen, having all the human factions neatly aligned, placed next to giant wilds, meaning that the inner map never gets invaded.

Well, the faction strongholds with the weaponsmiths and armorers are all outer map... so they get destroyed first... Already lost one to orcs, now the undead are knocking on the door of the second one.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
I'm having a new run but I'm hesitant to say that it goes well - I don't want to jinx it. After 20-30 days I only have one casualty and that was from a lucky arrow that went past his armor and helmet and 1 shot him.
Going much heavier on spears and shields in early game helps me a lot. I was trying to spread out the distribution of weapons but I should avoid this compulsion

There used to be small, unaffiliated towns in the fog sometimes but that was probably a quirk of the world generation and not deliberate design.

Took a caravan quest because hey, they were promising 700 bucks. The trip starts in the evening, night comes and I get an event where one of my Bros shows me some gems in the back of the caravan, so of course I nick them and run. Sold them for 1400 bucks in the nearest city. Cha-ching! Now the civilian faction hates me and hired some mercs to chase me down but while running away from the mercs I ran into another caravan of theirs..so I killed that as well. It only had some sour grapes this time around though. Booo!

Now, big question, is there any way to recover my reputation with that faction? It's Hostile 0/whatever right now.

Happen to me too.
I am locked from south part of the map because as fast as their peasants or caravans see me they hire mercenary company that go after me. Killed two and get some sweet medium armor.
You need to avoid them and wait. Rep recover over time.

If anything there should be seed for worldgen, to share good worlds. Tired of restarting a game to get a nice world.

Agree completely.
Maybe we should make a map market with saves from day 1?
Edition: normal/supporter as they do not work with each other(brilliant design).
Difficulty: beg/vet/exp iron or not
Company name and flag
Screen of the map and starting companions.

Yup. Sliders for stuff like water, mountains, terrain/climate types etc would be nice too, lately I've been getting the "3 peninsulas and giant mountains in the middle" maps again.
