Fights against the faction armies are too hard, and town missions aren't paying enough to upgrade my equipment.

The secret of this game is knowing what contracts you should take and what fights you should avoid. Some enemies are harder than others and should be avoided at the beginning, unless you have a bigger team. If you follow this routine, progression ensues. Also, pay attention to your stamina. It’s not a good idea at the beginning to overwhelm your mercenaries with bigger shields and heavy weapons that will make them tired during combat.

Beta Update 0.9.0.24
Additions, balance changes and bugfixes for the weekend. Hooray!

Please continue to report any issues in the appropriate forum following the instructions there - do not post them as comments here, they'd only get buried and lost, and may miss important Information.

Changelog
  • Added several legendary items with unique effects hidden throughout the world.
  • Added 2 new light head injuries for more variety.
  • Added 5 new events.
  • Added 10 new event illustrations.
  • Added button and hotkey (T) to toggle showing/hiding trees and other large objects in combat, in addition to the existing 'Always Hide Trees' option.
  • Added slime layer for characters that get freed out of a Nachzehrer's belly.

  • Changed 'Horrific Scream' of Geists to trigger four small morale checks instead of one big one, in order to make it less of an all-or-nothing skill.
  • Changed Direwolves to come in two visually distinct variants in order to make things more transparent - the classic Direwolf, without Overwhelm, and the new Frenzied Direwolf, with Overwhelm and slightly higher resolve.
  • Changed balance of noble house party compositions to no longer potentially have a frontline smaller than their backline.
  • Changed 'Rally' skill to make it easier to rally fleeing allies, but no longer boost the morale of men beyond steady.
  • Changed 'Battle Standard' and 'Sergeant' ambitions to come up again if the standard or the sergeant's sash are lost, respectively.
  • Changed footprints on the world map to be better visible against dark terrain.
  • Changed 'Armed Courier' contract payment to scale slightly better with renown.
  • Changed chance of Nachzehrers to drop loot to be higher.

  • Fixed combat not continuing in some cases when a character gets killed with a ranged attack right before their turn would start.
  • Fixed issue with combat not loading properly when too many combatants are involved.
  • Fixed issue with faction relations not updating properly during the noble's war. Does not work retroactively for ongoing campaigns.
  • Fixed 'Fast Adaption' resetting on hitting trees or other objects.
  • Fixed 'Battle Standard' and 'Sergeant' ambitions not granting a reward when the inventory is full already.
  • Fixed issue with 'Marauding Greenskins' contract.
  • Fixed issue with 'Obtain Item' contract.
  • Fixed issue with 'Siege Fortification' contract.
  • Fixed issue with 'Privateering' contract.
  • Fixed donkey being attackable in 'Wolfriders' scenario.
  • Fixed wrong reward amounts stated in contract flavor texts sometimes.
  • Fixed 'Tricked Out' achievement not unlocking.
  • Fixed various other minor issues.

I feel like there is more potential for interaction with former battlesites on the map. Especially ones you have not fought in. Maybe you can loot corpses, maybe you can come across survivors and help them in like a text encounter etc.

Right now, they dont really do much.

My luck is shit anyway. Day 77 and still no uniques, so i can't finish another ambition. Heard rumor about ancient tomb and its riches. Yeah, sure...

Still only 4 dead - Dark Souls, ADOM, Dungeon Master and Pools of Darkness, but my party looks like this -

Still no luck, i was desperate. But after 3 skull caravan escort to small border fort it got well supplied status and i found cheap warhammer and billhook. Got both for around 18k gold. Now we can show off our shiny new equip.

My luck is shit anyway. Day 77 and still no uniques,

I've just had this battle:
Day 19
Attacking a random location in the wild for the ambition. A bunch of auxiliaries and 4 legionnaires.
YDVEZwc.jpg

I haven't seen these in my last campaign. They're hard to hit with shieldwall up all the time but other than that they're not so bad.
L5hGRSc.jpg

Would you look that that.

Some more screenshots from earlier
First recruit. We need to get you a pike.
JEFgDCO.jpg

Second battle after the tutorial, 4 goblin skirmishers. Lost the guy with 2h axe but he was horrible.
ykdB8tp.jpg

That will do.

Enough with the goblins already. I love how you can scare them now just by rushing them with enough 45 melee peasants though.

There's also archers. I'd rather they run away but not luck.

Thankfully there was keep and a patrol nearby.

I had to take on one of the goblin groups myself, with this as the result.

Oh are you fucking kidding me.

Do I even have enough gold and food?
JPFKQBI.jpg

I longer want the rivers back.

Found some ruins with unknown garrison on the way. This could get ugly.

That's some nice loot, helmets and gems.

It keeps happening.

The contract location was just 4 ancient auxiliaries. Now we have to go back.
JoY1k7Y.jpg

Yes, the deer skull is clearly the problem.

The expedition was worth it after all:keepmymoney:

Edit: 2 more

Rescued this guy from a bandit camp, what the hell am I supposed to with the cowardly midget prodigy?

These helmets are so cool.

"Oh hey, finally I get another noble full helmet"

If you want more, prying them off nobles is a pretty reliable way to get them. :D

I haven't seen these in my last campaign. They're hard to hit with shieldwall up all the time but other than that they're not so bad.

They're harder when you start to get more of them, since large numbers of legionaries fight in two ranks. Much like with nobles, the shieldbearers are not-very-threatening meatshields who absorb punishment quite well. It's the polearm-users in the back who do the actual killing.

After you kill a few of them and inspect their loot, it becomes evident that their shields are good (+20/20 is common) but brittle, and they don't have a ton of HP. So, axes to chop up their shields or flails to negate their advantage are both solutions. You do need reasonably good armor and defense to avoid getting murdered by their backline while you're chopping through the front, though.

44 resolve and you call him coward?
Ok, dastardly midget prodigy. I gave him a morning star, stun and fatigue damage aren't affected by the tiny debuff.

I can imagine. Enough of them could just tire the player out with a giant shieldwall, even without polearms. I've looted a few of their tower shields, great defense but so heavy.

Definitely. There are a lot of things that could be done with it. If there's a high undead presence in the area, perhaps some unique events where various undead or ghouls attack the party. If you camp in the area, maybe your characters could find a serviceable weapon or two. etc.

I don't know what is it with this game but even the screenshots are more interesting than anything else around.

You can put Crippling Strikes and eventually Fearsome on him to increase chances of getting debuffs on hits, too. Might be a good sword & board bro to push enemies around and exploit riposte to get a higher number of attacks per round.

I really like midgets early on; they're low tier mercs who frequently have the defensive stats of high tier ones. Grimald the Gremlin and Berthold the Faerie Ninja had stars in defense, so they became my two flank guards, with underdog (heh) and the usual battery of defensive perks.

Your guy doesn't have stars in defense, so he'll eventually be outclassed at the one thing midgets are good at, but he'll be fine for a while. He's got high fatigue, so probably give him heavy armor and a big shield. Utility options are the way to go with weapons, so your ideas or maybe a dagger build could work. He's not really a keeper.

Midget is also not bad for archers, sure you lose some damage when you switch to pikes but a lot of time it's just s free defense bonus.

3 starts hunt the thieves contract. Thugs and archers.

Random stuff by the road.

Got some nice helmets and a shield.

Both of these have necroservants. I know where I'm not traveling through again. I also broke the contract I was going through half of the map for.

I'm starting to think tower shields are worth it.

Yeah, no.

Holy shit, this actually paid off. I've never seen that before.
bYJWYL3.jpg

Lost only 3 guys since the beginning and 2 of them were really bad. Also found the unique armor and got 3000 crowns for betraying a caravan. Something terrible is going to happen sooner or later.
