      Does the staff confer a negative level onto chaotic creatures who weild it that same way a holy avenger would on an evil creature? Also, remember that once your staff has a +6 or equivalent bonus (including enchanted properties) it counts as an artifact in respect to spells such as Mordenkainens Arcane Disjunction which may be undesirable.

        It's simply a +4 THAC0, with a +3 flat damage bonus to the die roll. To chaotic retardos only. It's not a +4 weapon. It is simply a +0, +4 vs alignment. I don't know if items can be that tho, most weapons I've seen in IE games have been at least +1, with a +4 special bonus.

        Yeah, a weapon needs at least a +1 bonus before you can apply other properties (such as Chaotic Retardo Bane) to them. Although in AD&D special rules applied once a weapons total enchantment bonus exceeded +3. (I was assuming your staff followed the 3.0 conventions, hence why I assumed it wouldn't gain artifact properties until a total enchantment bonus of +6)
