they are not. in my girl playthrough two named and one generic gryphon girls spend all game at frontline in their own squad. occasionally one of them died but overall they were fine.

Posted four of my units. Too lazy to photo them all. This is post game, so not the levels that I faced the final boss.
Travis was set up to be the one to deal with barriers with his multiple attacks. Adel shone with his attacks. Everyone could guard or evade.
Melisandre was my second barrier disabler.
Good defensive unit.
Ochlys was a beast, and so were Gloucester with his magical weapon. Mordon is the closest thing to a dwarf, and was my favorite character by default. This unit was unkillable.
Pyrite Pachyderm fixed the images.
