Time for me to start and abandon another LP, this time of Arkane Studios' first game, the unnoficial Ultima Underworld 3, Arx Fatalis! I've only played about an hour or two of it, so consider this a blind LP.

Part 1: The Escape (this post right here, dudebro!)
Part 2: Cooking With Cavemen
Part 3: The Goblin Kingdom
Part 4: Oh, the humanity!
Part 5: I sell gemstones and gemstone accessories

Let's start with the intro. Click here to see it BRO. I don't really feel like transcribing it.

Here's our character. I've provided an explanation of all the icons. As you can see, we'll be going for a pretty generic warrior build.

ARX2011-09-2218-03-03-34.jpg

We appear from mid-air and collapse to the floor. It's pretty obvious what's going on here if you saw the intro.

ARX2011-09-2218-03-16-38.jpg

Dragged to a goblin prison.

ARX2011-09-2218-03-43-07.jpg

This is where we start the game. We hear someone in the other cell.

ARX2011-09-2218-03-58-33.jpg

ARX2011-09-2218-04-03-48.jpg

ARX2011-09-2218-04-07-23.jpg

Oh, they'll be bloody alright. :smug:

prisonericon.jpg
Come on, look around your cell- there has to be a way to get out on your side... I can't do anything on my side.

Alright. We look around the cell to find...

ARX2011-09-2218-04-47-85.jpg

ARX2011-09-2218-04-57-39.jpg

ARX2011-09-2218-04-59-86.jpg

Well, isn't that convenient.

It's neat, though. The world interaction in this game is really great. Reminds me of Penumbra/Amnesia more than anything.

ARX2011-09-2218-05-07-17.jpg

ARX2011-09-2218-05-18-63.jpg

More than sufficient to break some skulls.

ARX2011-09-2218-05-25-06.jpg

ARX2011-09-2218-05-26-35.jpg

ARX2011-09-2218-05-33-77.jpg

:yeah:

We find a note on the corpse.

ARX2011-09-2218-05-50-01.jpg

Apologies if the text is unreadable. The note basically says what a bad dude we are.

ARX2011-09-2218-05-57-94.jpg

As any true LARPer, we take all of the food (you'll soon find that this game is a LARPer's dream).

ARX2011-09-2218-06-11-35.jpg

Time to free our friend.

ARX2011-09-2218-06-24-07.jpg

ARX2011-09-2218-06-33-48.jpg

You're lucky you don't have to hear to the voice-acting.

prisonericon.jpg
Well, you really have lost your memory, haven't you? Our world no longer has a sun to heat it and outside is nothing more than a huge expanse of ice. Only those who are trained and equipped for extreme conditions are allowed to make the trek between the fortress cities hidden deep in the mountains. These people are the Guild of Travellers.

pcicon.jpg
Right - we'll discuss this later - now let's get out of here.

ARX2011-09-2218-07-08-87.jpg

Excuses, excuses.

ARX2011-09-2218-07-22-78.jpg

ARX2011-09-2218-07-24-00.jpg

We bust open the hatch...

ARX2011-09-2218-07-34-53.jpg

... And down we go.

ARX2011-09-2218-08-07-26.jpg

Next time, we explore the caverns underneath the goblin prison.

The resolution seems a bit wrong, though, just like in my Threads of Fate LP. 800x600 or 1024x768 would've been a bit less... forced, maybe?
Anyway, doncha dare abandon this like you did System Shock!!!1

Last time I played I broke the main quest by finding a backdoor into the cellar of those snake chicks and turning them all prematurely hostile. :M

Generic warrior build? Prepare yourself for meh combat and an unbelievably frustrating endgame against superduperultra powerful melee enemies who can kill you in two hits and absorb 300, a situation which is not aided by the scarcity of healing potions.

Reroll as a wizard and prepare for AWESOME!

 I'll try not to disappoint you, Ms. Bee.

I'm playing in 1900x1080 and resizing to 1024x720. It probably seems weird since screenshots round these parts are usually in 4:3 aspect ratio. I'll can change the resolution if other people are finding it weird as well.

Damn. I'll save often and try to avoid stuff like that. Thanks for the heads up.

Part 2: Cooking With Cavemen

ARX2011-09-2220-42-52-70.jpg

Right away I start picking flowers like the faggot I am.

ARX2011-09-2220-43-24-88.jpg

Some phat loot in the form of grieves and, more interestingly, runes.

ARX2011-09-2220-44-00-76.jpg

We've learned the Ignite spell.

"But, Peter, how do you cast spells anyway?" I hear you say? Well, observe what might be the most interesting and at the same time infuriating aspect of this game:

ARX2011-09-2220-45-18-34.jpg

ARX2011-09-2220-45-20-20.jpg

ARX2011-09-2220-45-37-45.jpg

ARX2011-09-2220-46-10-04.jpg

We draw the symbols on the runes. Now, while the idea is cool on paper, in reality, it's much too finicky. It literally takes me like 10 times to draw that second symbol every time I try. It's why I'm not playing a mage. Feel free to bitch at me about how I just suck, because that may well be the case.

Anyway, proceeding further...

ARX2011-09-2220-46-26-25.jpg

I think it's clear which way we head first.

Ok, maybe not. We're going down the less spidery tunnel.

ARX2011-09-2220-46-37-45.jpg

We immediately notice a pressure pad on the ground.

ARX2011-09-2220-46-45-79.jpg

To repair this elevator, we need some rope.

ARX2011-09-2220-46-57-58.jpg

Here's another pressure pad. I wonder what happens if...

ARX2011-09-2220-47-09-99.jpg

... I take one of the stones and put it on the other pressure pad...

ARX2011-09-2220-47-34-62.jpg

... Oh, nothing? Well, what if we take all of the stone off of this pad?

ARX2011-09-2220-47-37-52.jpg

:yeah:

In the secret room we find:

ARX2011-09-2220-48-03-47.jpg

1) Some rope, which we shall not be using yet, as I want to explore a bit more.

ARX2011-09-2220-48-13-78.jpg

2) A key.

ARX2011-09-2220-48-17-74.jpg

3) A set of lockpicks, which won't really do us much good because we suck at lockpicking right now.

ARX2011-09-2220-48-50-08.jpg

and 4) kingcomrade

ARX2011-09-2220-49-13-62.jpg

ARX2011-09-2220-49-22-74.jpg

ARX2011-09-2220-49-26-86.jpg

ARX2011-09-2220-49-28-34.jpg

We repaid the elevator, but like I said, not using it yet. For now, we turn back and follow the tunnel with the cobweb.

ARX2011-09-2220-50-00-42.jpg

Again, we avoid the spidery passage...

ARX2011-09-2220-50-12-82.jpg

... to find this beautiful sight.

ARX2011-09-2220-50-38-63.jpg

A dude with some nice loot in a little side-room.

ARX2011-09-2220-51-18-64.jpg

And, ah, here is what we came for.

ARX2011-09-2220-53-58-09.jpg

First, we light the fire.

ARX2011-09-2220-54-10-09.jpg

Then place some uncooked rat ribs by the side of the fire.

ARX2011-09-2220-54-16-26.jpg

And voila, cooked ribs!

ARX2011-09-2220-54-52-64.jpg

Time to take on those spiders.

ARX2011-09-2220-54-58-91.jpg

:(

ARX2011-09-2220-55-14-74.jpg

Poisoned! No worries, though. It's draining my HP very slowly and I'll recover soon enough.

ARX2011-09-2220-55-26-72.jpg

We take down the spider, which turned out to be no threat at all, and continue onwards.

ARX2011-09-2220-56-54-95.jpg

After taking down some more spiders, we come to a room with a corpse and a barrel in it. There's a cure poison potion on the corpse. How very convenient

ARX2011-09-2220-57-26-30.jpg

And the barrel is the alternative source of rope for the elevator in this level.

I only take the fish.

ARX2011-09-2220-58-03-41.jpg

Heading back to the elevator, we stop to cook some more.

ARX2011-09-2220-58-54-65.jpg

ARX2011-09-2220-59-02-22.jpg

ARX2011-09-2220-59-13-37.jpg

Up the elevator, there is another fork in the road. We head left first.

ARX2011-09-2220-59-21-72.jpg

Another rat menaces us with it's wicked claws and sharp teeth.

ARX2011-09-2220-59-48-91.jpg

Slaying the foul beat was very much worth it though, as we find a dagger. :yeah:

Goodbye, bone. We had a good run :(

ARX2011-09-2221-00-06-91.jpg

Time to head the other direction.

ARX2011-09-2221-00-28-86.jpg

ARX2011-09-2221-00-30-97.jpg

:retarded:

ARX2011-09-2221-00-37-03.jpg

ARX2011-09-2221-00-46-56.jpg

ARX2011-09-2221-00-49-36.jpg

ARX2011-09-2221-00-56-71.jpg

Our friend emerges from the tunnel behind the goblin and helps us deal with it.

ARX2011-09-2221-01-32-60.jpg

On the goblin we find a lever. It must no doubt be used to open the portcullis that blocks our way out.

But first...

ARX2011-09-2221-05-11-13.jpg

Remember that key we got earlier. We use it to get into...

ARX2011-09-2221-05-28-23.jpg

ARX2011-09-2221-05-48-77.jpg

ARX2011-09-2221-05-59-23.jpg
ARX2011-09-2221-06-05-98.jpg

ARX2011-09-2221-11-25-72.jpg

... a pantry?

I think it's time we cooked some more. :yeah:

ARX2011-09-2221-04-57-11.jpg

First, some more ribs.

Now onto the cooler recipes though.

ARX2011-09-2221-10-52-10.jpg

Adding water to flour gives you bread dough.

ARX2011-09-2221-11-10-26.jpg

ARX2011-09-2221-11-14-85.jpg

Cooking bread dough gives you bread.

But wait, there's more!

Using a rolling pin on the bread dough gives you an uncooked pie.

ARX2011-09-2221-11-58-03.jpg

Adding apples makes it an apple pie! :retarded:

ARX2011-09-2221-12-04-34.jpg

ARX2011-09-2221-12-13-13.jpg

:yeah:

That should keep us going for a while, so we continue on.

ARX2011-09-2221-06-41-00.jpg

ARX2011-09-2221-06-50-96.jpg

Like I said, we use the lever found on the goblin to open the portcullis.

ARX2011-09-2221-07-10-96.jpg

As we head up the stairs, our friend thanks us and says goodbye.

ARX2011-09-2221-07-31-01.jpg

We have arrived at the second level of the cave complex.

That's all for today. Hope you are enjoying it

Part 3: The Goblin Kingdom

ARX2011-09-2316-05-33-37.jpg

Right as we step out of the stairwell, we can enter a little side room.

ARX2011-09-2316-05-54-00.jpg

ARX2011-09-2316-06-24-21.jpg

We throw a rolling pin to distract the goblins, hoping to get a backstab in...

ARX2011-09-2316-06-30-25.jpg

... But our stealth skill isn't too great.

ARX2011-09-2316-06-34-52.jpg

ARX2011-09-2316-06-43-59.jpg

The goblins are really easy to kill anyway, though. One of them even starts running away.

ARX2011-09-2316-07-00-02.jpg

A gem? Interesting.

ARX2011-09-2316-08-04-22.jpg

The club is a better weapon than our dagger, so we switch to that.

ARX2011-09-2316-08-54-49.jpg

As we continue down the hallway, we come upon the prison we escaped from. Nice little details like this really make the gameworld come alive. It's not like, say, Oblivious, where the cell you escaped from in the beginning isn't even in the Imperial Prison (if I recall correctly).

ARX2011-09-2316-09-25-77.jpg

ARX2011-09-2316-09-42-75.jpg

ARX2011-09-2316-10-04-12.jpg

We kill what is called a Goblin Lord who is guarding some more cells. Something's calling to us from one of them.

ARX2011-09-2316-11-02-83.jpg

Fade to black and he magically disappears. :retarded:

We use the awesome button to dismember some more goblin :yeah:

ARX2011-09-2316-13-31-89.jpg

We also get a new sword! :bounce:

ARX2011-09-2316-14-59-92.jpg

ARX2011-09-2316-15-02-09.jpg

While escaping the goblin kingdom is priority #1, sadly, this door is locked, and I don't wanna use my lockpicks.

ARX2011-09-2316-15-53-75.jpg

ARX2011-09-2316-16-13-19.jpg

ARX2011-09-2316-16-27-98.jpg

We head downstairs into what seems to be [Intelligence] a torture chamber.

ARX2011-09-2316-16-41-44.jpg

ARX2011-09-2316-17-51-48.jpg

I use about 7 or 8 lockpicks to open this door, but you will see that it is worth it.

ARX2011-09-2316-18-18-38.jpg

We get some more food...

ARX2011-09-2316-18-34-19.jpg

... a leather cuirass...

ARX2011-09-2316-19-04-59.jpg

ARX2011-09-2316-19-26-83.jpg

... a new rune which lets us cast magic missile (though we won't be doing much of that)...

ARX2011-09-2316-20-12-76.jpg

... and, most importantly, we get a neat shield and a longsword. We can't use the sword yet, as we only have 35/40 Close Combat skill needed to use it, but we're definitely taking it with us.

ARX2011-09-2316-20-24-99.jpg

ARX2011-09-2316-20-30-69.jpg

:retarded: Next gen puzzles. This game was way ahead of it's time.

ARX2011-09-2316-22-01-52.jpg

With that done, we head the only route we haven't gone down yet.

ARX2011-09-2316-22-21-32.jpg

You can't really see him in the screenshot, but there's a goblin on the left side of the overpass.

ARX2011-09-2316-22-32-78.jpg

He doesn't spot us as we walk down the hallway...

ARX2011-09-2316-22-47-36.jpg

... But he does hear us. No biggie.

ARX2011-09-2316-23-05-28.jpg

We're not headed up this set of stairs yet...

ARX2011-09-2316-23-19-52.jpg

... Nor are we disturbing the sleeping goblin. Instead, we just continue down the corridor to find...

ARX2011-09-2316-23-53-98.jpg

... Stairs that lead to the next level! :yeah:

ARX2011-09-2316-24-26-06.jpg

What awaits at the end of this passage? Possibly more of the same. Possibly not. We'll find out next time. :M

Lol why is this game praised at the codex? It's even more popamole than Mass Erect 2, the entire gameworld is nothing but corridor after corridor. What's more, it even predicted Kinect!! As in, moving around your hand doing silly gestures in order to make something awesome happen :M :M

Without being a capable mage, you can't get the good ending for the royal family subquest...

I played this game three times.
Last time - with the linux port - i larped and didn't kill or tried diplomacy with the dragon but just stole two of his eggs (i wanted to do things with them). It's possible if you know dispel field and telekinesis.

Also without beeing a capable mage the endgame becomes nearly impossible because a certain enemy type - that pops up quite often by then - is almost unbeatable without magic attacks.
I eventually gave up on this game because I skilled my character as a fighter first and an archer second, neglecting magic almost completely.

Alright, I'll put points into magic skills as well. I don't see myself being a capable mage because I can't draw the symbols half the time, though.

Draw them smaller.

Really small.

Do you know you can precast 3 spells?

Hold shift during spellcasting. Press 1..3 to cast them.

Great Speed or whatever it is, works on a pinch if you still want to meele.

Bit frenetic though.
Those guys should have been fire immune, then people would need to stretch a little bit.

I both hate and love the infravision spell.

Love it, because some levels are really dark mang. Hate it because of the horrible sound effects.

Are you going to steal? There are exploits... (but no, here i am ruining another guy experience).

Thanks for the tips. :salute:

And yeah, don't tell me about exploits and whatnot. I figure it'd be more fun for everyone id I just went through it as someone normally would on a first playthrough.

Our only option is to walk along this banal shit boring corridor. This game is no ARMA 2, I tell you.

ARX2011-09-2411-55-30-75.jpg

I won't question how these grow without sunlight.

ARX2011-09-2411-56-00-87.jpg

We head upstairs.

ARX2011-09-2411-56-13-18.jpg

pcicon.jpg
Mercenary? Perhaps... For now I have just put some distance between myself and a couple of goblins. What happened to you?

outposthumanicon.jpg
We were attacked by a small group of Ylsides; they wounded me and took three of my men...

pcicon.jpg
The Ylsides?

outposthumanicon.jpg
Two hours ago, three of them infiltrated the outpost. They attacked without warning or provocation. Ylside have earned a reputation as firece and unstoppable warriors, and now I've seen it with my own eyes... Their speed is unbelievable. In a flash they disabled and dragged off three of my men. You must've seen what they did to Karnak. I don't know why they did that, but I do know it won't be long before they return.

pcicon.jpg
Find someone else to help. I have my own problems to deal with.

:M

outposthumanicon.jpg
You are my only hope! I cannot trust the rabble at the tavern! I'd sooner trust a total stranger.

pcicon.jpg
I just told you that...

outposthumanicon.jpg
You have to go to the castle and tell the King what happened here! This is of vital importance! Since the last earthquake, the path to the castle has been blocked by a cave-in and we have been unable to get through. You must tell him that the Ylsides have declared war on us!

pcicon.jpg
This is ridiculous! You have just told me that the path leading to the castle is blocked!

Jesus Christ, what an asshhole we are. Though I suppose the player character is quite Codexian.

outposthumanicon.jpg
You should be able to go through the goblins' caves, two levels down, and find a way back up to this level. It's dangerous and roundabout, but we have no choice! If you find a way back up here, you should be back in the human kingdom once again.

pcicon.jpg
Impossible, I've only just escaped from a goblin prison!

outposthumanicon.jpg
Here, this will help, it's a gemstone dealer's license. As long as they think that you're a salesman and you don't attack them, they will probably leave you alone. I have to stay here. You are our only hope, brave mercenary!

I must say, while the atmosphere and gameplay of this game are really nice so far, the writing is fucking retarded. Like, Oblivion level retarded at times.

ARX2011-09-2411-58-54-33.jpg

Heading back downstairs, we notice the cave-in. Yeah, we totally couldn't crawl through the top there.

ARX2011-09-2411-59-03-87.jpg

Before heading back out, I decide to check out the outpost itself.

ARX2011-09-2411-59-31-67.jpg

Ooh, a mortar and pestle.

ARX2011-09-2412-00-05-64.jpg

ARX2011-09-2412-00-16-82.jpg

We can grind plants into powder and put that powder into empty bottles. I haven't figured out what the next step is yet.

ARX2011-09-2412-01-13-49.jpg

I also accidentally discover that you can add wine to apple pies.

ARX2011-09-2412-02-07-85.jpg

ARX2011-09-2412-02-09-56.jpg

Grinding bones into bonemeal and applying that bonemeal to weapons allows us to enchant them. I prepare my longsword for enchantment.

How I can actually enchant weapons, I do not know yet.

ARX2011-09-2412-03-42-48.jpg

ARX2011-09-2412-05-47-46.jpg

I cook some more apple pies and find dome gold under the pillow, and decide it's time to head out.

I must say, I quite like the whole cooking and crafting stuff. I mean, it is kinda LARPy, but it actually helps immerse you into the gameworld more.

ARX2011-09-2412-06-14-71.jpg

The guy we met before has passed away :salute:

ARX2011-09-2412-06-39-45.jpg

ARX2011-09-2412-07-17-30.jpg

I explore the pool of water outside of the outpost and find dude with a ring. Obviously I put on the ring immediately.

Now, the outpost commander did mention a tavern, so let's find that, shall we?

ARX2011-09-2412-08-20-42.jpg

ARX2011-09-2412-08-44-48.jpg

The door is locked. Down the tunnel it is then.

ARX2011-09-2412-08-54-02.jpg

ARX2011-09-2412-09-05-95.jpg

Ah, this must be the place.

ARX2011-09-2412-09-13-64.jpg

And will you look at that, the goblin we freed before is here as well.

pcicon.jpg
Polsius, why were you in prison?

goblinprisonericon.jpg
Well, me tell you because you my friend now

pcicon.jpg
:rpgcodex:

goblinprisonericon.jpg
You know, some humans disappear. Turned out dinner for Akbaa...

pcicon.jpg
Akbaa?

goblinprisonericon.jpg
Akbaa hungry. Always hungry. We goblins deal with Akbaa's priests. In beginning, good for business cos we give humans and they give gold pieces. But me not really happy because soon, Akbaa become too powerful and with Ylsides him want kill whole world: humans, goblins and all the others... I tell king of goblins and him say me bad goblin, not allowed do business. And me go to prison :(

pcicon.jpg
A human eating other humans? :retarded:

ARX2011-09-2412-10-17-78.jpg

We also speak to the bartender here.

ARX2011-09-2412-10-57-70.jpg

Oh yeah, she wants me :smug: Come on, Am Shaegar, bust out your best moves.

shep.jpg
Nothing in particular right now...

:rpgcodex:

ARX2011-09-2412-11-25-84.jpg

We head upstairs.

ARX2011-09-2412-11-37-25.jpg

Anyone up for some gambling?

We have to place the tokens on numbers and then spin the wheel. If the wheel stops on a number we put a token on, we get 100 gold. If not, we lose 10.

ARX2011-09-2412-12-19-95.jpg

Let's try this.

ARX2011-09-2412-12-28-68.jpg

Damn. Stopped on zero. We're out 30 gold.

ARX2011-09-2412-12-44-15.jpg

We can speak to this dudebro before leaving.

ARX2011-09-2412-12-55-67.jpg

pcicon.jpg
Actually, I'm having trouble with my memory. can you tell me who I am?

barguyicon.jpg
Heh, heh... You're a trusting soul. Sorry, friend, but as I said, I've never laid eyes on you before.

You never said that but yeak, okay, whatever.

barguyicon.jpg
No one around here look familiar to you? Maybe you were with the Guild of Travellers and some horrible disaster befell them, leaving you to wander around traumatized... Or maybe some thug hit you on the head and lifted your purse. Who's to say?

pcicon.jpg
Well then, tell me about this place...

barguyicon.jpg
Well, this here is a bar, folks come here to drink and complain... But maybe you meant the bigger picture?

omg so funny

barguyicon.jpg
We live down here in these old mines because our sun flared out some years ago and left the topside world a frozen wasteland.

pcicon.jpg
But how many people live here? And where can I find this Guild of Travellers that I might belong to?

barguyicon.jpg
Y'know, I'm not really sure how many of us there are crammed down here... besides us men, you've got yer goblins, dwarves, trolls... then you've got different factions of each... hard to say, really. As for the Travellers' Guild, they're a bunch of hard-to-kill bastards who keep the lines of communication and trade open between us and all the other rat-hole cities. It's supposed to be a long, tough trek between cities, so we don't see them too often, it may be a while before we see another group.

Thanks for the exposition.

ARX2011-09-2412-14-36-20.jpg

There's something written on the fireplace.

"Traveller, if you want to take part in my treasure hunt, you will need an emerald to open my chest. OLIVER."

Alright, we'll keep out eyes open.

ARX2011-09-2412-15-38-66.jpg

Oh yeah, there's also a door downstairs, but I can't go through there without a password.

Time to head back to the goblin level of the caves.

ARX2011-09-2412-16-57-68.jpg

On our way back, we see this in the caves. We can't do anything with it, though.

ARX2011-09-2412-17-29-15.jpg

There's a goblin standing in front of the stairs leading down.

ARX2011-09-2412-17-51-94.jpg

We show him our gem dealer's license and he lets us pass, warning us of two human prison escapees. :smug:

ARX2011-09-2412-18-46-52.jpg

Back where we were before. Our journey truly begins only now.

 man I'm itching to replay it. I gave up when I start breaking the main quest. Never finished it. The grim dark atmosphere is JUST right. But yeah, the writing can get to you sometime!

All things considered, that's not actually a good idea.

I know, man. The game totally sucks you in. You can tell the devs put a lot of love and care into creating a consistent and atmospheric gameworld.

If Ultima Underworld is anything like this, I definitely have to play it (I've avoided it because of the controls in the past).

ARX2011-09-2415-59-12-93.jpg

We now head up this set of stairs that we ignored earlier.

ARX2011-09-2415-59-30-38.jpg

ARX2011-09-2415-59-57-17.jpg

Well, we have the badge, but no authorization. We do know where the boss is, though.

ARX2011-09-2416-00-56-72.jpg

Remember the sleeping goblin from before, whom I decided to ignore? Let's wake him and try to ask for authorization.

ARX2011-09-2416-01-16-84.jpg

I don't think he likes getting woken up.

ARX2011-09-2416-01-33-64.jpg

ARX2011-09-2416-01-45-09.jpg

Look at all that blood. This is truly a very mature game. Way ahead of it's time. Bioware only figured out what the Mature Gamer truly wants many years later.

Not enough tits, though.

ARX2011-09-2416-02-07-94.jpg

ARX2011-09-2416-02-49-41.jpg

In the bossman's room we find an unsigned authorization and a key. I know how we could get the papers authorized, but we won't do that just yet.

ARX2011-09-2416-03-50-81.jpg

ARX2011-09-2416-04-02-70.jpg

Instead, we first open the door that led out of the goblin kingdom now that we have the key.

ARX2011-09-2416-04-12-33.jpg

A new rune! No new spells appear in our journal, though.

Oh, at this point I practiced spell-casting a bit (you'll notice I have no mana in the next image) and got pretty proficient at casting magic missile. The more complex runes still give me trouble, though. Wish there was more margin for error in the casting.

I also only now decided to increase mouse sensitivity, and it certainly helped with the casting.

Anyway, let's proceed.

ARX2011-09-2416-11-49-55.jpg

This is like that broken structure we saw in the caves near the tavern. Except, you know, not broken.

Guessing they're teleporters.

ARX2011-09-2416-12-10-00.jpg

Looks like we've stumbled upon a musician. His haunting flute melodies really add to the ambiance. Or they would, if the creepy cave noises and ambient music weren't a bit overdone in this area.

Let's have a chat with him, shall we?

ARX2011-09-2416-12-34-33.jpg

trollicon.jpg
Me Greu. Me here because left troll camp. Not want to work for goblins. Me not like goblins. Goblins all little. Can't trust goblins. Goblins think troll stupid. So me live here, on own with fishes. Fish not give orders and me eat them.

pcicon.jpg
[Intelligence] Hmm, so if I understand correctly, the trolls work for the goblins?

trollicon.jpg
[Success] Wow, you smarter than you look... Pog, King of Trolls, follow goblins' orders. Greu hate goblins. Greu prefer stay here: free, no orders, no working. Greu make music. Greu make statue. Greu artist.

trollicon.jpg
Today Greu's birthday... But Greu alone: him not have friends. Him not have presents... Burwaka only friend of Greu, up there, him work for goblins. Greu sad. :(

pcicon.jpg
Well, maybe we could be friends...

The PC sounds like an autistic Adam West when he says this line.

trollicon.jpg
Really? You want be Greu's friend? Me have new friend!... Well, friend. What you got for Greu for birthday, then? :M

Oooh, you manipulative little whore. :rpgcodex:

pcicon.jpg
A present? Let me see what I can do...

The sidequests in this game, my God! Scavenger hunts, birthday presents - it's like I'm really playing a Bethesda game!

:x

There was another passage here that we didn't explore.

ARX2011-09-2416-16-32-19.jpg

ARX2011-09-2416-16-36-89.jpg

ARX2011-09-2416-16-42-25.jpg

ARX2011-09-2416-16-54-02.jpg

Oh, just a rat. Such rewarding exploration.

It's time to take care of that authorization, so we head up to the tavern.

ARX2011-09-2416-24-00-76.jpg

On the way there, I notice a ledge with something blue and shiny on it. I;m guessing it might be the emerald it's what I might need for the scavenger hunt. I don't know how well you can see it in the screenshot, but it was really striking in-game.

I wonder how I can get up there.

ARX2011-09-2416-24-45-79.jpg

In the tavern, we give the authorization papers to Polsius.

ARX2011-09-2416-24-49-49.jpg

:yeah:

ARX2011-09-2416-28-55-95.jpg

ARX2011-09-2416-29-00-09.jpg

I show both of the papers to the goblin...

ARX2011-09-2416-29-03-09.jpg

ARX2011-09-2416-29-06-29.jpg

... And he lets me pass.

ARX2011-09-2416-29-21-33.jpg

Going down a level.

ARX2011-09-2416-29-45-37.jpg

ARX2011-09-2416-30-28-90.jpg

The lit hallway quickly gives way to a spider-infested abandoned mine.

ARX2011-09-2416-30-33-17.jpg

I count 3 or 4 spiders down there.

ARX2011-09-2416-31-56-83.jpg

I equip my sword, precast 3 magic missiles, and hop in there.

ARX2011-09-2416-32-20-83.jpg

ARX2011-09-2416-32-30-12.jpg

ARX2011-09-2416-35-01-77.jpg

ARX2011-09-2416-35-17-89.jpg

They only come at me one at a time and turn out to not be a challenge at all.

Also, I miss with all 3 magic missiles  The spell seems to go considerably higher than where the reticule is. I'll get the hang of it.

ARX2011-09-2416-35-49-77.jpg

Levitation scroll! Maybe this is how we'll get the stuff from the ledge near the tavern!

ARX2011-09-2416-37-39-67.jpg

We explore some more and find some poison.

ARX2011-09-2416-36-42-95.jpg

And we find where we need to go.

ARX2011-09-2416-38-29-12.jpg

ARX2011-09-2416-38-41-04.jpg

pcicon.jpg
I am no ordinary human, I am a gem dealer... Open the gate!

goblinicon.jpg
Trolls on strike - no gem trade today - you not comin in!

pcicon.jpg
[Speech 3%] Now come, open up!

Nope, no getting through there for now.

ARX2011-09-2416-39-10-97.jpg

ARX2011-09-2416-39-28-84.jpg

Right across the bridge there is a troll mine, but I'm no allowed entrance into there either.

ARX2011-09-2416-39-49-03.jpg

ARX2011-09-2416-39-54-98.jpg

Nor can I go down here.

I would complain about the extreme railroading, but with all this talk of breaking the main quest, I guess a bit of guidance won't hurt.

ARX2011-09-2416-40-34-98.jpg

Our only option is to walk past the troll mine, to the very corner of the cavern.

ARX2011-09-2416-40-52-60.jpg

There are some stairs that lead up here.

ARX2011-09-2416-42-18-10.jpg

On the next level, there is a fire right by the stairs. We use the opportunity to bake some more pie.

ARX2011-09-2416-42-50-11.jpg

Quite moody. sadly, I didn't manage to take a screenshot of a bat that flew past me.

ARX2011-09-2416-42-57-51.jpg

ARX2011-09-2416-43-44-37.jpg

There are quite a lot of gemstones sticking out of the ground here, but I'm guessing I need a pickaxe or something to be able to get them.

ARX2011-09-2416-44-19-60.jpg

After a bit of wandering, I find the stairs leading up. But first...

ARX2011-09-2416-46-18-12.jpg

... We bake some more pie :smug:

ARX2011-09-2416-52-17-54.jpg

As we head up the stairs, a cutscene starts.

ARX2011-09-2416-52-44-18.jpg

:pete: Lord, we have located an energy flux.

:avatard: Another one... Why are the immortals never content with their own dimension?

ARX2011-09-2416-52-52-37.jpg

:avatard: But... That is our eternal duty, I suppose: to ensure that the universal equilibrium is maintained. Where is the origin of the energy channel?

ARX2011-09-2416-53-11-97.jpg

:pete: An otherwise unremarkable world called Exhausta. The supplicant expired before he could finish the communication.

ARX2011-09-2416-53-18-32.jpg

:pete: What should we do, Lord?

:avatard: Let us send the guardian...

How very cryptic. It doesn't concern us too much, though. What does matter to us is that...

ARX2011-09-2416-53-36-17.jpg

... We've reached Arx!
