The folks over at <A href="http://www.rpgdot.com">RPGDot</a> have gathered an <A href="http://www.rpgdot.com/index.php?hsaction=10053&ID=598">interview</a> with <b>Robert Sirotek</b> of <a href="http://www.sir-tech.com/">SirTech</a> about whether or not they still exist as a company, and the odds of a <i>Wizardry 9</i> and <i>Jagged Alliance 3</i>. Here's a snippet:

I have mixed feelings about SirTech. I remember the first Wizardry game and I have followed the series off and on since the beginning. I think the series tends to be too combat driven. Not a problem, I guess, but I find it tedious to fight for every inch of ground only to fight for every inch back to visit shops or NPCs only to fight for every inch to get back to where you were so you can fight every inch forward from there. That sentence is a good example of how I view the games, long and tedious.

Still, I can't deny that I find the games impressive and the quality is certainly top notch. I've never played Jagged Alliance, but I'll probably pick it up if I see it the next time I'm at CompUSA or some such. It's heavy combat, but that doesn't bother me in a combat heavy genre. In fact, X-COM remains one of my favorite games today, and it's 90% squad based combat. Too much combat ruins a CRPG for me, but not so with other titles.

I really hope that SirTech pulls through and keeps producing games. It's a shame to see all of the game developers from my early days in computers going down the drain. Now, if we could just get New World Computing away from 3DO and give them enough funds to do a good game, that would be great!

Jagged Alliance is pretty much all about combat and resource management...whether that resourse is human or not :). Still heaps of fun, though I dislike how the results in combat never differ if you reload and do the same thing, unlike in Fallout and other games.

I never cared much about Wizardry, but JA3 would be nice to see. I wonder just how far ahead he's talking, though.

I never really liked how combats turned out the same, either. It's actually easier to exploit that way anyway, IMO, since all you need to do is take a step or fire a throwaway shot if there's a low roll. If you have lots of duds, just skip your turn and let the bad guys miss.

Try making other squad members move first. The random seed is reset everytime something happens, which include totally non-related occurances like someone 200 metres away reloading his gun. Simply reloading a save game will not change the seed. This is to prevent save/reload cheating, which I hardly ever do anyway. It removes the challenge from the game. If a merc dies, hire another one. If you finish the game without a merc dying, you probably exploited the save/reload function :).

Oh man this is excellent news. I have been playing games for a long time and to date JA2 has the most enjoyable combat of any game *evar*. I just hope they are making a true sequel to JA and not fubaring the franchise with a bunch of "looks good in the previews and for marketing" nonsense.
JA should be required playing for everyone, esp. those who think that tb combat cannot be an intense, nail-biting affair.

The lack of randomness (dice roll results doesn't change when you reload a save and try again) is confusing at first, but ultimately a good feature imo.
But damn right irritating is the esoteric nature of all the stats. The "to hit" calculations are pretty well covered (though not in the manual of course - you have to surf around to find it), but the math behind damage is nowhere to be found. So good luck in finding out why five shots from the same gun can result in anything between 5 and 100 points of damage with everything being exactly equal.

In any case, I'm very exited about the prospect of a JA3.

Down with Wizardry; Sir-Tech were the makers of Realms of Arkania, too! I really enjoyed those games and I would be looking forward to any unlikely continuation of the series with high expectations.

Or just played it by night with night ops specialists as mercs - as this is fully possible in ironman (the gold pack featured this) - still it took me awhile and just closing the game when you realized you fucked up (replaying the "mission") - JA2 is sort of like SCHMUPS - you learn the pattern by trial and error and then you manage.

I do hate the times where you take a fully possible shot, and you expect it to hit, and it don't - and it is thy last enemy of the day, of the mission - and he fucking kills your level 10 MERC and you are left to reload the mission and start a new - just because you thought that 10APs would be enough.

Yeah, I love using a night ops specialist squad. Unstoppable when used right :).

One thing I am really unhappy with is mercs with supposedly good stats (I'm looking at you Gus!) who don't perform well. You'd think a high marksmanship skill would mean you'd enemies the majority of the time, but noooooooo....

I really like the "shoot in a leg, run up with a crowbar" combo
JA2 indeed have the best combat simulation I have ever seen in a computer game.
