| has anyone played they old dos release of Twilight 2000? The character creation system is pretty unique, it mirrors some of my favorite table top games developed by GDW who publish the paper version of Twilight 2000. I've just made some characters so far and not dived into the game yet, was wondering if anyone has played it, what the combat system, or other aspect of the game are like before i devote serious time to it. |

I've never even heard of it.
But, The Underdogs seem to rate it pretty highly, so I'll give it a whirl. _________________

| I thought it was pretty bad and I enjoyed the PnP version. Starts off looking promising but then just gets annoying. Namely the the NPC's don't seem to follow encumbrance rules so they'll be packing a heavy weapon like a guided AT/Auto GL plus a tripod mounted MG. The huge maps and poor scrolling also gets annoying. A simple minimap would have really helped. What's really bizarre are the vehicles seem to be sailboats, they almost come to dead stop if you turn east. |

Ugh, the manual for it is horrible.

Character creation looks promising, except for the "many skills have no use in the game, but are left in so you can use your game characters for P&P campaigns" bit. _________________

You would think that but sadly it's not the case. As I'm sure you'll learn quickly the village headmen has as much chance as speaking Italian or Armenian as they do Polish. And they only speak ONE language which makes no fucking sense whatsoever. How'd they get elected or give orders if nobody can understand them?
I'd suggest MegaTraveller 2 for your GDW fix.

Just remember it came out in 92' so maybe not far from the truth. Although Darklands came out that year also. |

That's beside the point. Why the fuck is there marketing hype drivel wasting space in the manual? _________________

the fact that alot of the skills have no use is really annoying, i wanted a master of metallurgy to mean something.
Dark Conspiracy is the GDW game that holds my most prized possession rank of gaming books. But I will certainly give MegaTraveller a shot. Should i just start with 2? |

Pre-internet days. I heard about most games back then by word of mouth so they were probably trying to give you a little coaching. About the only advertising I remember was the full page ads in Dragon magazine. A lot's changed over the last decade.

I've honestly never tried the first one. I've read it was linear, too short and there were some other complaints which were mostly fixed in 2. 2 is an "epic" so if you're looking for a shorter game you may want to try the first. |

Wow.. Twilight 2000 was one slick PnP rpg back in the day. I use to play that in junior high (91~_ ).
Never played the cRPG, but I'll look it up.. |

So-so. If you have react on your characters will usually finish the job before you realize what's happened, at least last time I played on a modern PC. I'm going to try it again in DosBox and see how it goes.
It seems to be faithful to Traveller so primarily exchanging gunfire. You need high end weapons to defeat high end armor. Trick is each planet has a different "Law Level" so even if you have the best gear you may not be able to get it through customs. |

| hahaa alright, first combat i hit my entire teamed was vaporized in hail of baddly emulated SB16 death screams. Is there no way to pause and issue orders, or do i really have to click on each team member and then try and shoot the enemies? |

It's been awhile but I think you just hit the combat icon. IIRC it pauses the game and opens the combat menu. Can't remember if there's a keyboard shortcut.
Once you leave Rhylanor look for a high tech, low law level world. Anarchy is the best and load up on weapons and armor. Get a variety for the various law levels. |

I never managed to prevent the pink muck from covering the planet :'( This game was quite hard, and I'm not too keen on time limits in RPGs. Was there something beyond the pink muck in the storyline (like the water chip in Fallout) ?
I think the first episode was ok - albeit easy and linear - and is a good introduction to Marc Miller's Traveller.
I'd kill to see another cRPG based on Traveller. |

| I really liked Megatraveller's character creation system. I played 2 for quite awhile, but I am not a fan of time limits on RPGs either. And yeah I had abused that "infinite money" bug in the beginning... |
