DEATH COUNT = 1

Chewed by Alligator isn't a very glamorous way to die, so I guess I'll give it another go. Now, where were we ?

krnl386_248.jpg

Riiight.

3. Death Becomes Me.

Ii stand frozen looking at the beast, but then it hits me... I'm packing a gun. I frantically take out my revolver and...

krnl386_251.jpg

krnl386_252.jpg

bog02.png
Nice shot, but this place is dangerous. You should get out of the sewers.

hero.png
No, I think I'll search around for a bit longer, I want to see if I missed something.

bog01.png
You really like it here buddy. Don't tell me, it reminds you of home.

I enter a corridor where the sewage water drains.

krnl386_257.jpg

hero.png
I think I'll jump over to the other side. Yes, it seems like a good idea.

bog02.png
You know that sewages are rather slippery, right Ace ?

hero.png
Of course I do, I'll just-- aaaaAAAEEHH-

krnl386_261.jpg

dead again.

Crap. We're leaving the damn sewers.

krnl386_266.jpg

I use the key I lifted from the dead man to unlock the door. Finally, I can get out of this dump.

krnl386_268.jpg

Ahh, fresh air, nice day, I think that I feel more optimistic now that I'm in the street. Now I can-

krnl386_269.jpg

What the fuck ?

krnl386_270.jpg

Great, just great. I just got out on the street and I'm getting mugged.

bog03.png
You better do what he says, he looks like he can mow you down with his fists.

hero.png
The bigger they are... the harder I HIT !

I wont give my money to a slimy street thug. With a sudden move I punch him in the face with all my might :

SOCKO.jpg

krnl386_273.jpg

bog03.png
Uh, oh, you better do something, bud. His other fist reads HATE.

I see murder in his eyes, I pull out my gun.

BLAM.jpg

He falls down with a big thud. People are screaming around me.

krnl386_280.jpg

krnl386_281.jpg

Another dead end, I'm afraid. Maybe I shouldn't have punched him. What would have happened then, I wonder ?

krnl386_284.jpg

krnl386_285.jpg

bog02.png
Penniless and beaten up. You look like shit, ace.

hero.png
The story of my life, bucko.

My head hurts like someone is hitting me with a hammer, I don't know what to do. Maybe I should turn to the police. There's a police station in the next street...

krnl386_288.jpg

krnl386_290.jpg

Goddammit ! I'll avoid the police for now, I go past the corner to another street and-

krnl386_292.jpg

bog01.png
...Ace in the hole.

hero.png

Death awaits in every turn. This game is rigged. But now I know what to do. I'll avoid the alley with the big thug and stay clear of the police and of construction sites.

Suddenly, a woman approaches me. She seems familiar...

krnl386_294.jpg

dame.png
Say "goodbye" sucker !

hero.png
What the ...?!

BLAM.jpg

krnl386_297.jpg

The dame was loaded.

I'll need to be faster if I want to survive. The minute she reaches for her bag, I throw a punch.

SOCKO.jpg

krnl386_307.jpg

Got you bitch !

bog01.png
Good to see you still got it, Ace. I bet you can also knock out old men and little children...

hero.png
She got what she deserved. Now shut up and let me search her. She could be involved in this somehow.

krnl386_312.jpg

A gun, a makeup kit and some money, nothing significant. I steal her things and run away. I think someone called the police, but I'm far away when they finally arrive.

I find myself near Joe's bar again. Someone beckons me.

krnl386_321.jpg

hero.png
Oh god, another one ? This is a really bad day...

mugger.png
Give me all your money or I'll blow you away !

hero.png
Not if I blow you first !! (uh, that didn't come out the way I meant it)

I reach for my gun, but I'm not fast enough.

BLAM.jpg

krnl386_324.jpg

That's right, I won't make the same mistake twice. This time, before he can react, I smack him hard with a sucker-punch.

SOCKO.jpg

krnl386_327.jpg

What a wimp. I turn my gaze to the news stand.

krnl386_335.jpg

The whole world has gone to Hell. I start a conversation with the newsboy.

hero.png
Hello there, friend.

He looks at me as though he recognizes me.

newsboy.png
You owe me 25 cents, "friend".

I decide to pay him. He might have seen something about the people that did this to me...

krnl386_341.jpg

hero.png
Thanks for the warning.

I wave goodbye and look around the area, someone must have seen something that can help me. In a filthy alley next to the bar, a bum waves at me...

krnl386_344.jpg

His breath stinks like roadkill, but I'm desperate. I give him a 20 dollar bill from the cash I lifted off that dame.

krnl386_347.jpg

It's probably just the ramblings of a drunk, but if it's true this could save my life. Thing is I might need that money later. I ask him kindly :

krnl386_348a.jpg

Filled with rage I ask him again. With my fists.

SOCKO.jpg

krnl386_352.jpg

Suddenly I feel tired, really tired. Punching random people in the face and dying numerous gruesome deaths can do that to you. Next time I'll try to be a little more civilized and less suicidal...

Bah, who am I kidding ? I'll be back to punching dames and dying foolishly in no time.

WTF, is this a reverse Grand Theft Auto where everyone is out to kill you?

Not only that, you also can use the gun on your character for yet another stupid death. Also, Uninvited was even worse, your first death could be barely a few seconds after you start

I had this on NES and was never able to finish it, always got stuck on the same part (after the bungalow) so keep up the good work, I want to see the conclusion.

But Goddamn the window version is ugly! NES was simpler but better looking:

Yeah, I've already mentioned it, the NES version is the best one, especially in the UI department.

As for the numerous deaths, just wait and see, we're not finished yet. It seems the world has a grudge with Ace.

Is there any reason to go in the sewer aside from just to kill an alligator? Also, is there a real point to these vignettes? Seems like the random hooker, construction site, etc. are just sucker traps to kill people who've never played the game before.

Yep, there is a major reason to go to the sewer and also for the woman in red, who isn't random but tied somewhat with the characters. A lot of the deaths deaths are basically there for your morbid entertainment though.

I've been away from LP-PC (i.e. work) these last couple of days. Update will probably come the day after tomorrow.

I don't know how different this version is from the NES... er... version, but the endgame can be VERY confusing... especially regarding which items you HAVE to get rid of and which ones you HAVE to keep.

Good luck, have fun.

I saw we imprison Ghostdog somewhere... Perhaps a cold place? Something made out of translucent material which is also cold? It would be a fitting punishment.

DEATH COUNT = 6

Rejoice faithful followers and eat your hearts out unbelievers !
It's another chapter of furious punching and ludicrous dying !

Ok, but now what ?

bog02.png
You have guns, but do you have bullets ?

hero.png
Yeah, I'll definitely need some ammo...

4. Sweating Bullets.

You can never have enough guns/ammo. I find myself outside Pete's All Nite Gun Palace.

krnl386_355.jpg

I get inside and find a huge man by the counter. His cheap cigar stinks...

krnl386_360.jpg

bog02.png
Heh, that's a standard military-issue German Luger.

hero.png
Niice, since I have enough money I'll take both the gun and the bullets.

bog01.png
Are you going to start a war, Ace ?

hero.png
I haven't started this war, but I'll sure as hell finish it...

With all this ammo we're set for rest of the game, Everything seems to be going smoothly...

WHEN SUDDENLY ...!!

krnl386_370.jpg

hero.png
... ...
ad_plant.png

krnl386_371.jpg

Yep, the time limit caught up with us. So, we'll have to go back to start and do everything we did up to now as fast as possible. Standard procedure.

***

I get back on the streets and I bump on my old pal, the mugger. It seems my fist has been imprinted on his ugly face.

krnl386_376.jpg

mugger-eye.png
I said give me ALL your money !!

hero.png
It seems you haven't learned your lesson, sleazebag.

SOCKO.jpg

krnl386_378.jpg

What a pansy. As I watch him run away, I feel a strange sensation, a recollection of something...

krnl386_380.jpg

He gave lots of guilt and probably lots of beating, god bless his soul.

bog03.png
Hey bucko, enough with fooling around, you have a couple of addresses you should check, you better find some wheels...

hero.png
Right, what about the Mercedes in front of the bar ? It's probably Joe's car...

bog01.png
You need keys to operate a car. You *are* familiar with the basics of driving, right Ace ?

Damn, I just remembered I hadn't searched Joe's body. He probably has them on him !

krnl386_423.jpg

Bingo ! Time to enter that beauty...

krnl386_428.jpg

krnl386_430.jpg

The glove compartment doesn't have any gloves, but I find some interesting stuff :

krnl386_433.jpg

As I look at the picture I feel a tingling sensation in the back of my head...

krnl386_434.jpg

There's also a car registration made out to Joey Siegel of 1212 West End St. and a map, the map is rather interesting...

krnl386_437.jpg

bog02.png
Huh. It seems you and Joe Siegel have a history.

hero.png
Yeah we must have been thick as thieves... Wait a minute, what was that about Mrs. Sternwood being in the trunk ?!!

I run to the back of the car and try to open the trunk, but to no avail, it's locked. I'll need a different set of keys for the trunk.

krnl386_445.jpg

I put my ear on the trunk but I can't hear anything, I should try to pry it open, but I shouldn't do this right here in the open. I decide to take the car to a more remote place. I put the keys in the ignition :

krnl386_439.jpg

I start the car.

krnl386_442.jpg

:rpgcodex: typical.

bog03.png
Ace, I know your brain is melting down, but have you already forgotten what that broad said ?

hero.png
Damn, that's right ! She said something about leaving a little surprise under the hood !

bog01.png
Well, I guess it was indeed a surprise...

I decide to forget about the trunk for now. Since I can't use the car for transportation I'll have to take a cab. There are a couple of destinations I could head to...

  • Dr. Brody's Pharmacy : 934 West Sherman
  • Joey Siegel's Apartment : 1212 West End St.

I decide to head to Siegel's apartment.

krnl386_454.jpg

krnl386_460.jpg

cabdriver.png
Where to, Sir ?

hero.png
1212 West End Street.

cabdriver.png
Sure thing.

krnl386_467.jpg

The building reeks of Luxury. I feel it in my gut that I don't belong here, you must be a real scumbag to you have a flat in such a place.

krnl386_470.jpg

hero.png
Damn, it seems like it's a private elevator...

bog02.png
What about that key-card you found in your wallet ?

hero.png
That's right, it was Siegel's card !

krnl386_472.jpg

krnl386_473.jpg

The lift brings me to Siegel's room.

krnl386_478.jpg

I take another look in the mirror, hoping to have some recollection about myself...

krnl386_480.jpg

Nothing. I look around the room, there's a magazine on the table.

krnl386_482.jpg

I grab the magazine, just in case, and then I spot something on top of the fireplace...

krnl386_483.jpg

bog02.png
That's one hot gal there, buddy.

hero.png
Hot and expensive... Mr. Seigel likes pretty things. Like that painting on the wall.

bog01.png
There's nothing like a great work of art for inspiration :smug:

Suddenly I get the urge to clean up my gun. Unfortunately my hands are trembling and the gun is still loaded :

BLAM.jpg

krnl386_493.jpg

Yeah, that one was just for the death count. Next stop, the dame's house, 520 S. Kedzie street.

krnl386_503.jpg

krnl386_506.jpg

bog02.png
The door is locked, what now Ace ?

hero.png
There's no one inside. I'll just have break the door down.

SOCKO.jpg

krnl386_510.jpg

hero.png
Ouch !

bog02.png
Nice try, Ace. Next time you should use your head. Literary.

hero.png
Fuck this shit !

Full of anger I take out the revolver.

BLAM.jpg

krnl386_515.jpg

sheppard.png
:xtreme tear of joy:

bog03.png
Really smooth, Ace. Finish this quickly before the Police arrives.

I get inside, the room is really shabby.

krnl386_516.jpg

The smell of perfume is similar to the one that was lingering in the room with the typewriter in Joes's bar. Maybe this gal is Siegel's secretary.

A piece of paper on the desk draws my attention...

krnl386_526.jpg

bog02.png
Looks like a combination. Do the math.

hero.png
Yeah, I'll have to get back to Joe's safe.

Next to the paper lies a single earring.

krnl386_527.jpg

It's identical to the one we found in the women's bathroom at the bar. This girl has definitely been there. I open the drawer to find an unmarked key and a diary.

krnl386_530.jpg

bog01.png
That's some movie-drama material there, bud.

hero.png
John Sternwood... I wonder if he's somehow connected with all this.

We've finally gotten some leads, but why do I feel somebody's playing a big joke on us ?

dejatroll.jpg

Oh well.
