Unwieldy, and requiring a set-up time, but once set up, it tears through any enemy it's sighted on. For some odd reason though, you need to set it up for each new enemy you ask dextermor to shoot at. He refuses to remain seated and just change targets. This, and the limited ammo capacity (which gets refilled upon return to base) means the weapon, although quite awesome, is of sadly somewhat limited use.
Also depicted in the above picture is Bee and spekkio wi

If I remember right, you can use the "kneel" command to deploy the turret and get ready to fire. And they are indeed very useful in tearing up aliens quickly.

Who knows? Maybe he's the evil mastermind behind it all? :M

@korenzel
Oh! Good to know! I'll be looking into that. Thank you, very pertinent information. You, good sir, have earned the next bio-armour to come out of the labs. :salute:

What Korenzel said. Also, Collapsible Plasma Cannon weighs almost half that of the railgun so it should make movement somewhat easier. And it still kicks major ass.

Aliens on our team?!?

As promised, here is your sunday update! :salute:

The kneeling option with collapsible weaponry does indeed work, :salute: to korenzel and dextermorgan!
This makes dextermor ever so much more useful in missions. :incline:
While our troops were off killing mutated wildlife, our researches started "talking" with some captured grays. :rpgcodex:

The info they surrendered allows for some breakthroughs in material science. :smug:

Our aircrafts are now fully upgraded as far as I can see in the R&D screen, and indeed, they seem more capable now than ever. Bringing down even alien battleships.
Another breakthrough creditable to our boys in the R&D department is better heavy armour.

Note though, that it still slows movement to walking speed, but it provides better protection against alien weaponry.
The warp weaponry principles, while still not fully understood, has provided us with a gatling-cannon like weapon, the warp resonator:

This weapon also requires heavy armour worn to be deployed in battle, but contrary to the collapsible railgun, this weapon can be fired while standing, and it relies upon the markmanship skill and not launchers, which is why I gave it to Storyfag for field testing.
It kills most enemies in a single or a few shots, but sadly it quickly runs out of ammo, and cannot be recharged in the field. :decline: Storyfag will stick to bio-armour and regular sniper rifles for now.

One of the newly captured bases had a stockpile which included flamers..

Yes, they are every bit as deadly as one would assume. :incline: Too bad they're so short-ranged, but JoKa will have fun with this puppy.
Our talks with captured reticulans led to an unexpected research path:

We take the mission. More info on the enemy is always good, and if we don't like what these "friendly grays" tell us, we could just throw them into combat unarmed and unarmoured..
The mission itself is very simple. Go in, kill all transgenants (mutants) and save the two terrified grays.

And what do you know? The little bitches joins our team! So, if any of you twisted codexers out there want your callsign assigned to a scrawny, pale-faced, beady-eyed alien invader (or honest trader/ambassador as they would like us to believe..), speak up. I'll keep them around for now, but currently, it doesn't look like they'll be joining the away team anytime soon. They're just too crappy..
Now, if the game throws any reticulans-only equipment at us, that might change.

So I started to play and got royally fucked by biomass that got seeded in Europe and is eating my bases like there's no tomorrow.

:x

As a side note, I think aliens have the major advantage of being able to wield collapsible weapons without having to wear heavy armor. Don't know what it does for their movement speed though.

The two aliens now in my team cannot wield/wear human made arms and armour, only captured reticulan gear. Which, at least for now, means no armour. And no collapsible weapons. :rpgcodex:

And yes, watch out for those planter UFOs. They can royally fuck you over. You need to get research on biomass repulsors started ASAP in this game.

On another note, judging by the amount of research projects I have left, it looks like I'm nearing the endgame. If so, given my current motivation, expect an Aftershock LP to be started in the near future. :smug:

In that case, lemme sign up pounded_anus I as a psi specialist for the next game. :thumbsup:

Gave the game a spin. Its ok so far, though biomass did kick my ass before. Still seems like more fun to watch than play though.

Aliens have pretty good natural armor, better than enhanced heavy armor against laser, warp and plasma which is what reticulans mostly use.

However, they suck as human weapons are generally better than alien ones, and they can't use the collapsible plasma cannon correctly as they can't kneel.

I'm waiting for the Aftershock LP. I gave the game a try but gave up quickly enough, I didn't like the general look & feel and the over-the-top difficulty of tactical mission, coupled with the ridiculously small team size. I might give it another go depending on how the LP goes.

Yeah, the story is...odd. But let's not spoil too much already, OK? ;)

@anus_pounder
Your interest is noted :love: , but I will not be taking any names for the second game yet. Once I start the LP and explain the rules about the roles and training, then people are free to sign up.
And I'm glad to provide the prestigious Codex with some entertainment. :salute:

@Cassidy
Your interest is noted as well :love: , but see above answer. All in due time. :smug:

@Kashmir Slippers
I think I'll keep them around, but the odds of me actually arming them and sending them on field missions, well.. :smug: As to friendly aliens, just you wait 'till Afterlight, if I ever get around to doing an LP of that. Oh boy. :M

@korenzel
The teamsize in Aftershock is reduced only until you research the proper upgrade. Then you can get to field 7-man teams, just as in Aftermath. :smug: And I don't find the difficulty of the tactical missions in Aftershock to be higher than Aftermath, but the lack of a "delegate" feature can be disheartening. When you get mission after mission, and more or less have to deal with them or lose resources you can barely do without. But I'm getting ahead of myself. :M
As to aliens and their natural armour, well that's just :decline: At least let me capture some armour for them or something like that. Meh. There'll be plenty more diplomacy in Afterlight, if I get that far. :roll:

The end!

And now the game comes to an end.

We have researched one more transgenant, and only one research project remains.
We're pushing back the biomass, but a good part of the earth is covered nonetheless.

The purpose of the seeding of our planet is revealed in all its horrific glory!

And we receive an intriguing offer from the reticulans.

As soon as the message is decoded by our boys in R&D, a popup appears in the Geospace window.

A one-time only offer, a deal we cannot refuse. A seat on the controlling council of our very own God-computer? It is an offer we cannot refuse! We click "yes" and get this screen:

And we're rewarded with this extro movie (courtesy of youtube).

So here I leave you off, dear readers. Our mission to save the earth was superceded by the need to gain immortality.

Adios.

:troll:

Seriously though, this is considered the canon ending, but we won't have any truck with that, so we reload and click "no".

And the game continues, with a single research project remaining. The next update should contain our ending, and with that, the start of another LP looms in the horizon. :smug:

Yes, the canon ending implies humanity went full retard and accepted the xenos' offer, absolute :decline: imo. So it's time to purge the alien scum!!

PS: I'll choose my Aftershock's character after you show the possible options.

signing up to continue my duty as human female medic/sniper (depending on available trainings anyway) in aftershock. and if bee wants to take dibs on starting femchar, i want a non-derp portrait :smug: (good thing you can finally buy as many soldiers you want there)

also, it's a shame they dropped random soldiers in afterlight and went with the 'preset characters to show their personality' bullshit :s

That is the canon ending?

THE FUCK!!!!

What were this game's writers smoking when they made this game?

It's what extreme Shepard would have done.

Unprecedented power, the power to enslave entire galaxies, at humanity's feet. :smug:

The reticulans could always be killed off at a later date.
