Well, the trip fell through spectacularly. But on the bright side it meant I got home early and finished this.

So to recap: Instead of joining a hale and hearty group of fellows in their harmless debauchery with a town female, our protagonist was himself kidnapped and tied to some train tracks. A passing couple freed Genma only after pressing him into service with their clan. Left alone, and with little money in his pockets, he plans his next move and thinks of revenge.

Also, why do all power-players dress strange in this town? If I slap on some overalls and a clown mask, will I hit level 2?

Kitcho mentioned that the Akadama Clan holds a mansion at the top of the hill in this area. The meeting doesn't start for awhile, but it wouldn't hurt to say hello.

The path to the right leads out of the Rokkotsu Pass entirely, allowing you to finish the game right then and there. You'll be allowed to store any swords or items you collected for use with another character, and get a rating on how you performed that go round. Points accrued will eventually unlock new creation options and various other things.

Note; Genma starts out only about fifteen feet in front of these guys. Either they're very unobservant, or blind.

pcsx2r31132010120119112.jpg

We can't say we're here for shits and giggles, and we know the basics of the clan's goals. Maybe Genma should just pester Kitcho again?

We're all ears.

Hrm.

pcsx2r31132010120119123.jpg

You can't hear it of course, but at this point everyone unleashes a pretty good war cry with the swords. I remember being impressed the first time I saw this.

Heading for town and through Ipponmatsu's north exit leads to the boundaries of Kurou territories.

pcsx2r31132010120119145.jpg

The town itself isn't much to look at.

pcsx2r31132010120119145.jpg

You got a restaurant and a few random homes. The rail line and the Foundry seem to be the only real points of interest other than the clan strongholds.

Kurou lands. And...oh ho.

*A half minute later*

pcsx2r31132010120205360.jpg

So as we can see, Genma is triumphant, but also totally gimped. Fortunately, there's a way to take care of this that doesn't involve hiding behind a conveniently placed crate and waiting for our shields to recover.

"What?"

pcsx2r31132010120205523.jpg

Just snack on the mushrooms you find randomly on the ground, and you'll either gain back some health, or lose a bit. If you're quick, you can kick them into the air even during combat, and get a life-saving boost. Or kill yourself because you ate something you shouldn't have.

I've never confirmed if taunting ever actually does anything, but it always seems that Tsubohachi gets tricker after a good mocking. If it hadn't been for a nearby mushroom, I'd have been dead.

Heh, 5 yen.

Enjoyable update, dude, keep it up, that was fun.

Also...

How hard is the combat? I figured the 5 yen guy was some kind of mid to end boss and yet you beat him in the second update itself.

I remember WotS2 combat was hard for me, but not only was that years ago, I never bothered learning.

The combat is really simple, and the tattooed guy is one the level of a silly henchman rather than a mid-boss. Really good update, though.

At least in WotS3 the combat gets a lot easier once you have a couple of moves and your first Quality 5 weapon. Besides, the instant kill counter against mooks is fairly easy to start, if you know how.

Yea, but it's a very nice Kurosawa-esque story with 29 endings (though most are variations of the different endgame paths). I for one prefer the whole warring states period set-up where a douchebag has usurped his lord. But I happily accept short length with the level of choices and consequences the series brings to bear with the design. Plus, it actually does cinematic design very well, being very close to Kurosawa movies.

And the game would drive Bioware fans insane with its romance endings, since those are the hardest to get (except for the evil conniving trophy lover one, since that is more about taking the correct direction in the game rather than picking precise dialogue choices over a long period of time). The two I've done (the aforementioned bitch and the princess-to-farmgirl one) were pretty good though, and certainly not the most noble endings you end up with (one ends with you being puppeted around, and the other has the two of you RUN AWAY from the whole mess facing the region).

Taunting usually incites the boss characters and makes them unleash more powerful attacks. Useful if you're aiming to build up your mikiri list, or if you already have a good idea of how to handle a specific move, and lure him into performing it so that you can counter-attack.

Sounds pretty good, WotS3 I mean. Too bad I can't find it anywhere. :x
Hey, it's True ending alone is worth it. And thank the lord it has the option to take Japanese voice-overs.

Does WotS1 have the option to draw your sword while in a cutscene? It's in WotS3, and unlike what I first thought, it wasn't just "start killing shit" button, since in one cutscene it instead moves to a different direction where you sorta impress the guy after which he stares you down and you continue being in his service.

Looks to be far more interesting than WotS3. Also, the graphics seem to be on par as well.
And yes people, the C&C in this game ispretty awesome. The games play out like choose your own adventures. Good fun to be had until you are decked out in insanely powerful Katanas.

Alright, I'll start working on a new update. The new Warband edition of Prophecy of Pendor came out and it's taken most of my non-Codex attention for the last while.

Edit: Seriously, Mount and Blade can be so addicting when you get the right module.

With a bounty of...*checks* 15 yen clanking around in our pockets, now is a great time to hit one of the places we passed, and introduce another game mechanic. You can actually see our destination off to the left.

But first, let's see what the common Kurou goon thinks of the future.

pcsx2r31132010122701160m.jpg

Our options are to have him work on a sword in our inventory (which I'll go on to explain), or to 'deliver' one, which makes that sword accessible by subsequent characters.

pcsx2r31132010122701160.jpg

Right now all we have is the shitty default sword, so there's no point in delivering. Let's see if we can't improve it a bit.

pcsx2r31132010122701161.jpg

The first option deals with increases in Attack or Defense, the second (and much more expensive) allows your sword to take more damage before it shatters. I'll cover that during the next fight.

pcsx2r31132010122701170.jpg

Increasing Sharpness generally improves your Attack while damaging the sword's Defense statistic. Flexibility does the exact opposite. Unless you're a gambling man, never choose 'nothing in particular'. I've seen amazing swords get enormous subtractions in Attack, Defense and Life thanks to Dojima and this option.

pcsx2r31132010122701171.jpg

Here's the sword before any work is done. Pretty basic.

pcsx2r31132010122701172.jpg

First we choose Sharpness.

pcsx2r31132010122701173.jpg

pcsx2r31132010122701173.jpg

pcsx2r31132010122701173.jpg

pcsx2r31132010122701174.jpg

The bad.

pcsx2r31132010122821173.jpg

pcsx2r31132010122821174.jpg

If you're low on yen you can refuse to pay, but that makes Dojima immediately attack you. He's not that big a deal right now (I've got it set on Easy for this first game), but he can get tricky at higher settings. And of course, killing him means that you can't get anymore work done until another game. Still, if you don't want to hunt for cash, it's an option.

pcsx2r31132010122701174.jpg

pcsx2r31132010122701175.jpg

We choose to have the sword worked on one more time, and this time want Flexibility.

pcsx2r31132010122701182.jpg

It adds 3 Defense, while subtracting 1 Attack.

pcsx2r31132010122701183.jpg

Not enough to do anything else, so let's go.

pcsx2r31132010122701183.jpg

pcsx2r31132010122701184.jpg

So everything evened out to give us +2 Attack and Defense. Most of the time its random, so either stat could have been higher or lower.

pcsx2r31132010122701231.jpg

Nearby the Kurou Compound, there's another exit that takes us to the local Shrine. Also, you'll notice we've transitioned into late afternoon/evening.

pcsx2r31132010122701271.jpg

pcsx2r31132010122701271.jpg

pcsx2r31132010122701272.jpg

Toyoko here is just one of several wandering samurai who you can bump into. Some will try and rob you, others will give you bits and pieces of backstory, or teach a new technique. Though I think he's the only unique looking one. The others use basic Kurou/Akadama appearances.

pcsx2r31132010122701285.jpg

pcsx2r31132010122701290.jpg

On screen, you can see a gray strip above my health bar. This is the sword's durability (or toughness, as Dojima calls it). Every time you hit someone with your sword, block an attack, etc it fills up a bit. The meter is always going down, but a couple flashy or powerful moves in a row could fill it all the way up. Likewise if you block a number of them. When that happens, one of those sectioned parts of the strip will be gone. Lose all of them, and your sword shatters, leaving you fighting with a hilt. Trickier still is that the lower the durability of the sword is, the quicker it will shatter because there are less sections of the strip to fill.

So there's a secret way into the Kurou Compound, huh? Might be something to check out later on after the meeting tonight. Question: Kitcho grew up there, so he has to know this way in. Why didn't the Akadama attack that way? Or at the very least send some assassins?

As fun as it is to stand in a creepy place with dolls nailed to trees, I think it's time to leave.

When you hit the evening period, fights between Kurou/Akadama soldiers become more common. At night, they're extremely easy to find, almost every area will have a battle. The bridge where I met Tsubohachi typically has several going on at once. You don't have to do anything to help your current faction (matter of fact, at this point the random thugs don't register you as Akadama), but it can be fun.

Especially when someone isn't watching their back.

"Surprise!"

The aftermath of something I really wish I'd caught. When I hit him from behind, it connected at the same time the Akadama guy hit his legs. Result? Hilarious flip routine.

From there it just seemed to get worse for the poor bastard. He'd already been losing when we showed up, and facing two now wasn't changing that.

Remember how I said the random faction members don't have me concretely listed as Akadama right now? Yeah, the moment I killed Matumoto, Takase took a look at me with a sword drawn and had a brain fart. Next thing I know I'm having to dodge strikes from my own 'buddies'. Time to leave. Besides, the meeting starts soon.

A heartwarming scene. While the Kurou are established bullies and Government ass-kissers, it appears the plucky Akadama Clan helps look out for the little people. Even if they can't tell who their friends are on the battlefield for shit.

This isn't sounding very wholesome at all!

...Did one of the freedom fighters just kick an old man?

What a dilemma. Support the cop, who's probably here to break it up but is part of the same establishment we're overthrowing, or someone whose side I'm technically on?

The next update will either be tomorrow or the day after that, where everything starts to go downhill pretty quickly for our poorly dressed troupe of rebels.
