Shit, I completed the game back when Poland didn't even have software copyright laws and never realised it had anything like the "Indy Quotient"

Awesome LP!

And here we are. Back in Iceland. The land were Norse and Celtic Mythology collide and Ice Trolls roam.

Erupting_geysir.jpg

Dr. Heimdall's dig, isn't far from our old digsite.

scummvm00601.png

Sophia00.png
The Jastro Expedition... how could I forget ?

Indy02.png
Cold enough for you ?

Sophia02.png
Even colder than my feelings towards you, Jones.

ouch.

Fire, Flood, Pestilence. The Usual Things.

Inside the dig site we find Dr. Heimdall trying to uncover some kind of eel figurine trapped in ice.

scummvm00620.png

Heimdal.png
Dr. Indiana Jones, I believe, and Madame Sophia Hapgood ! This is MY dig site now. Go away.

Indy01.png
I thought you were digging up Norse graves in Denmark.

Heimdal.png
I WAS... obviously, now I'm not !

Indy02.png
Not feeling very friendly today, are we ?

Heimdal.png
I like solitude. It helps me think.

Indy01.png
Doctor, what do you expect to find here ?

Heimdal.png
The secret of Hyperborea. That's what the Greeks called Iceland, you know. You've read how they sailed north to a fog-shrouded land ? And how they never set foot upon it ?

Indy01.png
Yes...

Heimdal.png
HA ! After traveling thousands of miles, mere fog wouldn't turn them back. Some idiots claim they were repelled by ghosts. Poppycock ! You know what ACTUALLY stopped them, Jones ?

I'm sure he's going to tell us.

scummvm00645.png

Heimdal.png
They were stopped by a FORCE FIELD ! Put there by BEINGS not of this Earth !

Be more specific !
Is it this :
not_of_this_earth.jpg
... or this :
notofthisearthgq12.jpg

Indy02.png
Umm... That's FASCINATING, doctor. Why would these "beings" show up here ?

Heimdal.png
I am convinced that these travelers came to earth to form colonies like Atlantis, using Hyperborea as a spaceport ! Up north here, we're close to the Ether. It's a perfect landing site.

I think it's time to cut to the chase and ask him about Plato's Lost Dialogue.

scummvm00682.png

Heimdal.png
Yes, there are rumors about such a book, but I've yet to see it.

Indy01.png
We'd really like to learn more about it, doctor.

Heimdal.png
There are two people you might want to visit. Charles Sternhart in TIKAL, a shady fellow... and Felipe Costa in the AZORES. As a researcher he is a farce, but he is a sharp trader.

Indy01.png
Thanks. So, what's the link between Hyperborea and Atlantis ?

Heimdal.png
Why, the Jastro Expedition. The one you BOTH worked on. Recently, I saw pieces from it that are clearly Atlantean !

Indy01.png
I see.

scummvm00678.png

scummvm00679.png
:sexy throwback of hair:
scummvm00680.png

Now how can you really blame her after that ? Put the blame on mame.

scummvm00686.png

Heimdal.png
The bronze eel here ? Obviously an Atlantean artifact. Uh... it's probably a beacon for wayward spaceships.

The doctor doesn't seem so sure. If we ask him again...

Indy01.png
What is this "eel" artifact again ?

Heimdal.png
I already told you ! It's... uh...uh... an Atlantean fish-trap. I think.

You can continue asking him and get various funny answers, but for now Indy has some thoughts about Dr. Heimdal :

scummvm00710.png

Sophia00.png
I'll say ! Spacemen, my eye !

Funny thing coming from someone who believes in Atlantean spirits, or at least *claims* to believe in them... Stealing artifacts from expeditions, trading them in black market, making phony shows about Atlantean Spirits... I'd say Indy has his hands full.

Anyway, there's nothing more for us in Iceland. When we head to the airport we get three possible destinations. New York, Tikal and the Azores. I think we'll head to the Azores first.

scummvm00719.png

After the cool landing sequence... We reach what is regarded as the westernmost point in Europe, the Azorean Islands.

Azores.jpg

scummvm00721.png

...We go to Costa's house:

scummvm00729.png

Indy01.png
Mr. Costa ?

Sophia00.png
Be careful, Indy. Humor him.

Indy02.png
Trust me. :smug:

That's one hellova smug here...
snapshot20100720195548a.jpg

Anyway, Mr. Costa finally answers the door.

scummvm00735.png

Costa1.png
If it's not a priceless artifact, I don't want it.

Indy01.png
I hear you know something about Plato's Lost Dialogue.

Costa1.png
Maybe so, maybe no. Who are YOU ?

let's try to play it cool :

scummvm00742.png

Costa1.png
Not in my book. Goodbye.

crap

scummvm00746.png

Sophia02.png
I could have done better.

Indy02.png
Yeah sure.

Let's try the old and cunning, bathroom trick !

scummvm00749.png

Costa1.png
Yes... and NO !

:smack in the head:

scummvm00753.png

Damn ! That didn't go well, but Indy never gives up !

:KNOCK KNOCK:

scummvm00773.png

Indy01.png
I hear you know something about Atlantis.

Costa1.png
Pah. Wouldn't tell you if I did.

Let's be diplomatic.

Indy01.png
Come on. I'm a fellow believer.

Costa1.png
Is that right ? Do you know where Atlantis is ?

scummvm00782.png

Costa1.png
Hmm. Come closer, boy, and I'll tell you.

I hope he's not *that* kind of a dirty old man...

Costa1.png
You're STANDING on it !

Indy02.png
Impossible !

Costa1.png
No one believes me. That hurts.

Darn. He slammed the door on Indy's face, again.
Actually, considering the geographical location of the Azores, that claim isn't completely without grounds, at least according to the theory that Atlantis was somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. (With emphasis on the word "Atlantic")

scummvm00791.png

Maybe it's time to try a different approach. If we talk to Sophia we get the option to get her to try and talk to him.

scummvm00801.png

Sophia02.png
My pleasure. Watch and learn, Dr. Jones.

And now we've got Sophia under our thumb ! Let's talk to da man.

scummvm00807.png

scummvm00811.png

The trained eye may have noticed a slight change of behavior on mr. Costa's part...

Sophia00.png
I hope my friend didn't pester you too much.

Costa1.png
He's a FRIEND of yours ? Well no, he didn't pester me... THAT MUCH.

scummvm00818.png

The dog joke never gets old.

Indy02.png
Sophia...

Sophia00.png
See ?

Costa1.png
Ah, yes. I see.

scummvm00818a.png

Costa1.png
I can tell you this-- You're standing on it ! It never sank, at least, not all the way.

Oh not this crap again.

Sophia00.png
What happened to the Atlanteans ?

Costa1.png
Well, they had a run of bad luck, demons and devils, and they left.

Indy02.png
:under his breath: Great. Another Atlantis-addled mind nut-case...

Costa1.png
However, their SPIRITS have personally told me it was mostly bad luck.

DEFINITELY a nut case.

Sophia00.png
What do you mean bad luck ?

Costa1.png
Fire, flood, pestilence, the usual things.

scummvm00878.png

Costa1.png
I didn't "place" anything ! It's just the facts, ma'am. Plato's Lost Dialogue spelled it out in plain Greek.

At last we've come to the topic of interest.

Sophia00.png
What can you tell us about "Plato's Lost Dialogue" ?

scummvm00826.png

Sophia00.png
Do you have it ?

Costa1.png
Nope.

Sophia00.png
Have you read it ?

Costa1.png
Nope.

Sophia00.png
Do you know what's in it ?

Costa1.png
Not exactly.

Sophia00.png
Can you get it for me ?

Costa1.png
Sorry.

:x

scummvm00837.png

Costa1.png
Well now, that depends. I might TRADE the information for a rare Atlantean artifact... Such as a certain NECKLACE I've heard about.

Well, well. He's a sneaky old bastard.

Sophia02.png
I'll NEVER trade my necklace.

Costa1.png
Well, than, if that's how you feel... Surprise me.

Sophia00.png
Would you do business with my friend here ?

Costa1.png
Madame, I'll do business with anyone !

Sophia00.png
Thanks for your help. Goodbye for now.

Costa1.png
AT your command, Madame. Don't be a stranger now.

scummvm00851.png

scummvm00852.png

scummvm00853.png

Hmm, I guess we'll have to find some king of Atlantean Artifact to trade... That's what Archeology is all about , folks ! Maybe we can find out more about Plato's Lost Dialogue from Charles Sternhart.

Next Stop, the exotic Tikal !

I remember discovering it by chance. I must have hit "I" by mistake and suddenly the inventory was replace by a strange IQ thing. That was also the first time I suspected that there were different paths in the game. Then I actually read the manual and found out about these things. Imagine that I was such a popamoler that at first I only used the manual for finding the copy protection stuff.

It's not popamolism, real men skip the manual and jump straight into the game... Just look at the Space Rangers 2 LP

You wouldn't normally expect a Lucasarts adventure game to have multiple paths, either.

And here we are, at the tropical and mysterious Tikal, one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centers of the ancient Mayan civilization. Tikal was one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Maya, so I'm sure the Atlanteans had something to do with it.

Tikal1.jpg

Old Legends die hard.

scummvm00897.png

Sophia00.png
You're the one who's afraid of snakes.

Indy02.png
Great. Thanks for reminding me.

suppressed memory:
ctc-3088-image6.jpg

Indy01.png
Looks like the end of the road.

Sophia00.png
There's got to be a way through, but I'm not setting foot in that malaria-infested hole.

In case you didn't get it, it's up to Indy to find a way through the jungle. There are various paths in the jungle and a huge rodent that always runs away when we try to get close to it.

scummvm00912.png

After a couple of hoops through the jungle paths we finally get to a clearing, only to find a chasm that prevents us from moving on.

scummvm00918.png

That tree could be useful, but the giant anaconda seems to be in love with it.

scummvm00923.png

I tried to use the whip on the snake, but that only seemed to aggravate it. So what now ?

Damn ! That puzzle bugged me for a long time back in the day. What we need to do is chase the rodent around the jungle and get to stop in front of the path that leads to the cliff...

scummvm00950.png

And then whip its ass !

scummvm00954.png

:whip:

scummvm00966.png

The giant rat gets out there.

scummvm00970.png

The minute the anaconda sees the plump, mutated rodent, it knows that it's time for lunch.

Anaconda3.jpg

scummvm00971.png

scummvm00973.png

scummvm00975.png

scummvm00976.png

scummvm00977.png

YAY ! One step closer to Anaconda and Jungle Rodent extinction. Now we can cross over using the tree.

scummvm00984.png

Tatarataaa tataraaa !

scummvm00987.png

scummvm00988.png

Man, that was awesome work. I think that now we can feel good about ourselv-

scummvm00990.png

scummvm00992.png

Sophia00.png
While you were bushwhacking, I found a path.

Indy02.png
Marvelous. We better find Sternhart.

What's with this "Trinkets" stall ? We decide to have a look, but the moment we come near it...

scummvm00999.png

scummvm01002.png

He's a vicious watchdog, that Sternhart.

Sternhart.png
Postcards ? Replicas of the temple ? Souvenir mugs ?

...And a true scientist.

Indy01.png
No thanks, Mr...?

Sternhart.png
Charles Sternhart, Ph.D. , independent thinker, researcher and merchant.

That's our man.

scummvm01010.png

Sternhart.png
I'm the one who translated it-- I can tell you that ! I'd worry you were here to steal my last copy, but someone called "mr. Smith" beat you to it.

What the fuck

Indy01.png
Not again ! What can you tell us about "Mr. Smith" ?

Sternhart.png
He showed up last week. A tall man with a German accent and a pistol. He could have taken all our souvenirs, but he only wanted the Lost Dialogue.

Hmph. For all we know, his alleged "translation" could be as phony as those souvenirs.

Indy01.png
I'm hoping to find some evidence of Atlantis here.

Sternhart.png
Evidence is easy. You're surrounded with it. PROOF ...now that's hard.

Indy01.png
Does that mean we came to the wrong place ?

Sternhart.png
I've pretty much lost hope myself. But old legends and rumors die hard.

scummvm01032.png

Sternhart.png
Local legend has it that the temple was built by men-who-are-not-men.

Indy01.png
What are "men-who-are-not-men" ?

Sternhart.png
Who knows... I've heard everything from giant men with snakes for tails, to giant snakes with men for heads.

Indy01.png
Do you actually believe Atlanteans lived here ?

Sternhart.png
After the city sank, this is where they came, I'm sure.

Indy01.png
What can you tell us about the temple ?

Sternhart.png
Rumors have it that the temple was built by survivors of Atlantis.

Well, we should definitely have a look inside.

scummvm01047.png

Sternhart.png
How do I know that you aren't a pair of silly tourists ? I only show the temple to reputable scholars.

Indy01.png
I'm Dr. Indiana Jones, is that scholarly enough ?

Sternhart.png
Indiana ? Sounds like the name of one of your states... or possibly a cat.

Sophia00.png
Actually, it was the name of a dog.

Indy01.png
:Hmph: Look... I'd really like to explore the temple.

scummvm01059.png

Great. We have absolutely no idea, and none of these names is the correct one. Let's just say the truth.

scummvm01074.png

scummvm01075.png

scummvm01076.png

scummvm01077.png

What the hell ? There's a parrot on the tree. Dammit ! Every game I play, these evil parrots appear !

Sternhart.png
Well, at least you're an honest man. But I still can't let you enter the temple.

Hmmm. This parrot might be of help since he constantly repeats what he hears... Let's try to communicate with the beast.

scummvm01085.png

:M Polly wanna cracker !

Indy01.png
23 skidoo.

:M And Tyler too !

Don't ask me.
Anyway, we should ask about the "Title".

Indy02.png
Title ?

scummvm01093.png

:M A friend of Socrates !

BAZINGA !

Hermocrates actually appears in Plato's dialogues "Timaeus" and "Critias" and it is rumored that he may have planned on writing another dialogue called Hermocrates, but never did. It's in his Critias dialogue where Plato tells the story of how a mighty Island kingdom called Atlantis, attempted to conquer Athens.

Now we should call Sternhart back here. The easiest way to do that, is to mess with his souvenirs.

scummvm01096.png

scummvm01099.png

Indy01.png
Umm... no thanks. Look, about exploring the temple...

Sternhart.png
Tell me the name of the L.D.P.

Indy01.png
The Hermocrates.

Sternhart.png
THAT'S IT ! Well now, maybe I was wrong. You seem to know what you're doing. Walk this way, please.

scummvm01115.png

Indy01.png
I know what you mean.

Me too, but who cares ? We're in.

scummvm01118.png

scummvm01122.png

Sternhart.png
No, I'm stumped.

Indy01.png
What was the purpose of this chamber ?

Sternhart.png
You have me there. Some sort of crypt ?

This guy knows his stuff... And he won't let us out of his sight.

Indy02.png
Don't you have to keep an eye on your store ?

Sternhart.png
Oh, I'm sure it's safe. I'd much rather keep an eye on you.

Ok. Let's look around. There's a strange stone-head on the wall...

scummvm01131.png

Spiral symbols...

scummvm01133.png

And one part of the mural that looks kinda strange...

scummvm01135.png

Let's try to pull it off.

scummvm01137.png

Hmm... We'll need something to make it come off. Maybe there's something we could use from Sternhart's souvenirs, but he won't let us out of his sight... I think it's time to use Sophia's "verbal" skills again. (See ? the game has verbal skills !)

scummvm01139.png

Sophia00.png
What's up ?

Indy01.png
Could you talk to Sternhart and keep him occupied ?

Sophia02.png
Okay.

scummvm01144.png

scummvm01147.png

The coast is clear ! Among The various trinkets, the only thing of importance is a kerosene lamp, let's grab it.

scummvm01150.png

Indy01.png
Good thing that pest Sternhart's not around.

But not for long...

scummvm01159.png

Sternhart.png
I hope you know what you're doing.

We sure do. First we'll open the Lamp and then we'll spill the kerosene on the mural.

scummvm01162.png

Sophia02.png
Look ! The kerosene ate away the tarnish.

Sternhart.png
Remarkable !

Let's pull it out now.

scummvm01168.png

Sternhart.png
Marvelous !

And finally, let's use it on the stone head :smug:

scummvm01173.png

Sophia00.png
Now it looks kind of like an elephant !

moar like a :mhd:

Sternhart.png
Amazing !

Hmm. I wonder what we can do with that thing. Why don't we pull it ?

scummvm01179.png

WHOA !

Sternhart.png
Astonishing !

scummvm01185.png

The old bugger found something in there...

scummvm01187.png

Sternhart.png
I do believe it's a WORLDSTONE ! At last I have the thing !

Worldstone ? Sounds important.

scummvm01191.png

HEY !

scummvm01192.png

Damn. It's the old secret-crypt-door trick !

scummvm01195.png

And we can't seem to find a way to open it. That weasel Sternhart has fled with the goodies ! But it seems that he was in too much of a hurry to check the tomb thoroughly, because our trained eye catches a glimpse of something shiny in there...

scummvm01202.png

Sophia00.png
Too bad for Sternhart. :smug:

HURRAY ! We've got ourselves an orichalcum bead ! I wonder what amazing things we could do with it.

=============================================
george.png
Hmmm. Maybe Indy could eat it and then produce golden feces !
Shadow_Narackamous.jpg
What ? You again ? WHAT ?!
george.png
Hey, that's an excellent idea. Maybe I could use it in the next Indy film... Indiana Jones and the Mida's-
Shadow_Narackamous.jpg
No, no ...AND NO !!!
=============================================

Enough with this madness. Let's ask someone with brains and knowledge :

scummvm01211.png

scummvm01213.png

:M Bwaaaaaaak !

At last, something that makes sense !

I think that we're finished with Tikal. Sternhart grabbed the worldstone (Which was also part of the ingenious DRM the original diskettes had) but we've got the orichalcum bead. So, what do we do now ? Hmmmmmmm.........

Next Stop... we'll see.

As for the year the story takes place, it's 1939, according to the comic that was based on the game. We're on the eve of WW2.

Thanks for the info. Indiana Jones really managed to have a lot of adventures in the six years between Hitler's rise to power and the beginning of the war !

You never watched the "young indiana" series? Dude you have no idea.

Also: I love how you are editing the character portraits so that they also seem to have the same pixel filter as ScummVM :)

Seriously, George Lucas should be shot by that disgraced film that was IJ and the Skull of Banal-Shit-boring aliens...

Keep the good work.

Eh OK. This game's great, I'm amazed it isn't as well known as the rest of LucasArts adventure series. Heck, even Sam & Max got a sequel this year.

And going through all possible playthrough to milk all the game's worth was a very fulfilling experience for me when I was young.

Even Day of Tentacle didn't feature such branching path.
