BoA sucks, says PC Gamer ( Review ) posted by Vault Dweller on Sat 21 August 2004, 18:40:38 More info on Blades of Avernum - More info on Spiderweb Software
I got PC Gamer to see that BG3 info and noticed a short Blades of Avernum review, trashing "rehashed gameplay, leveling mechanics, and inventory management". The final verdict is 50%. Here is a snipet:
The one potentially cool feature is the ability to alter the plot by the choices you make. For instance, you may be sent out to vanquish some rebels, but after hearing their plight, you can choose to join them. Still, without an engaging, cohesive take backing it up, ita ll feels flat and lifeless
Potentially? POTENTIALLY cool feature?!!! Fucking morons!

Jeff Vogel on Blades of Avernum ( Interview ) posted by Vault Dweller on Wed 07 July 2004, 20:49:50 More info on Blades of Avernum - More info on Spiderweb Software
RPG Vault has posted Blades of Avernum 3-page wrap report. Tons of intersting info. Here are some snipets:
The Team
We're a charming little company in a basement in lovely Seattle, Washington. It's me and two employees. I handle the bulk of the design and coding. My employees handle the business and web end, and help me with doing the design.
Technology
Well, we're a little company, with a low budget. In addition, we're download only, so our game has to be small enough to be downloaded reasonably by a 56k modem. These two constraints provide a lot of limits in terms of what we can do with graphics and sound. I would really like to make games with elaborate and lovely graphics and sound,
Best Decisions
The first good decision was moving to a full scripting language. Every good thing about the project came from this. You simply can't beat scripting for getting good, interesting character and special encounter behavior.
Personal Thoughts
It's simple and dated, but it's fun. The game system, after years of polishing, just works. It plays fast and easy, and it's really addictive. And because the design system is so versatile, people will be able to do new, funky stuff with it for years.
That's a really good way to describe Spiderweb games: simple and dated, but fun.

Blades of Avernum is out ! ( Game news ) posted by Vault Dweller on Thu 03 June 2004, 01:40:32 More info on Blades of Avernum - More info on Spiderweb Software
Our sources (ok, it was Psilon) have confirmed that critically acclaimed and highly anticipated Blades of Avernum is finally available for download.
In A Small Rebellion, you are sent to infiltrate and destroy a band of rebels against the Empire. The question: will you fight them, or join them? In The Valley of Dying Things, you delve deep into an enormous, abandoned school of magic, looking for the secret to a deadly plague.
In The Za-Khazi Run, you rocket down a subterranean river, racing against time to reinforce a besieged fort. First, though, you must outwit the many powerful, bizarre creatures living along the route. And in Diplomacy With the Dead, you have to help a remote city deal with the powerful vampire who lives just outside town. This turns out to be much more complicated than it sounds. I was actually browsing my vast games collection thinking what long forgotten game I should replay, when I saw this.
Psilon, thanks a lot!

AppleLinks reviews Blades of Avernum ( Review ) posted by Vault Dweller on Mon 10 May 2004, 15:35:49 More info on Blades of Avernum - More info on Spiderweb Software
Apple Links posted a short review of Blades of Avernum giving it 4/5.
In my opinion, far too many game developers don't know what role-playing means. They release games with "role-playing elements," when what they really mean is "the ability to spend skill points and/or use different armor and weapons." The Exile trilogy and the updated Avernum trilogy remain a shining example of what role-playing is really about...with just one tiny problem: the games end. When they do, you leave behind fascinating worlds with histories and people that can be found nowhere else. Blades of Avernum changes that by giving you the ability to play in adventures others have created, as well as the ability to make your own adventures for others to play Can't argue with "far too many game developers don't know what role-playing means" part

Blades of Avernum now playing at a Mac near you ( Game news ) posted by Spazmo on Fri 19 March 2004, 16:21:52 More info on Blades of Avernum - More info on Spiderweb Software
Our pal Jeff Vogel of Spiderweb Games today released the latest in the Avernum series of dungeon crawl CRPGs, Blades of Avernum, which includes four adventures built in as well as a toolset to make your own stuff. It's currently Mac only, but a PC version is expected within months.
Sounds thrilling and chilling. Grab your Blades goodness here, if you're one of those filthy communist Mac users.
