Wolf Mittag has posted the latest version of Teudogar, the RPG based in ancient Rome, updating it to 1.01 which includes improved inventory and bartering, some additional gaming features, and miscellaneous minor improvements.
Demo Version (Version 1.01, 5.67 MB)
(You can also use this file to update an older Demo Version already installed on your system. You can continue to use all of your saved games with the updated version.)
Full Version Update Patch (1 MB)
(Download and install this file to update your installed Full Version 1.00 to Full Version 1.01. You can continue to use all of your saved games with the updated version.)
Here's a detailed list of changes:
Inventory:
- Player's Inventory bag window: increased size. Now you've got more room to sort the things you're carrying.
- added Quick-Get/-Drop: Holding down the Shift-key while clicking on an object will now automatically pick it up or drop it, without the need for you to drag&drop the object.
- Player's Inventory bag window: improved auto-placing of objects: Similar objects will now be arranged next to each other. (E.g., when you've placed your food in the lower right corner of the window, an additional piece of food will automatically be placed there, too.) (Of course when you place objects manually you can still place them whereever you want - this change only concerns _automatical_ placing.)
Trade:
- When your trading partner has 2 or more gold coins, his pile of gold will be split and offered in several different slots on his bartering table in order to enable you to acquire only part of his gold. (Example: 12 gold coins will be offered as 6+3+2+1.)
- Piles of more than 10 silver coins are split in the same way. (Example: 50 silver coins will be offered as 25+13+6+6.)
- If there aren't enough free slots left, some slots are freed by removing valueless items like torches or mugs from your trading partner's bartering table. (You can still get these items from the slaves.)
- Optionally, the total value of all selected goods in silver coins will be displayed below each bartering table. (Go to "Options Menu, Language and Control, Bartering: Display total value" to activate this.)
Graphics:
- Options Menu: added option to adjust brightness, contrast, and RGB intensity.
Music:
- You can now load your own midi-files as intro and combat mode music.
Gameplay:
- Gaining experience: added moderate increase of strength, dexterity and intelligence (in addition to the increase of skills already available before)
- reduced effectiveness of magical rings or swords somewhat in order to counter-balance your stronger experience gains.
- can now use pliers and hammer (with fireplace and anvil) to repair weapons or armor (if not too heavily damaged).
- can now use tools to repair shields and leather armor (if not too heavily damaged).
- can now use loom to weave cloth (if spindles in inventory).
- Player lastingly cursed after causing trouble at Ziu's Grove: With the new version, this will only happen when you kill someone. Even then, the curse will now end automatically after 18 days. Alternatively, Ortruda in Ortruda's Forest (only in Full Version) can now free you from this curse.
- reduced weight of pick-axe. This, together with the increase of strength, should prevent your character from being overloaded too easily.
Bugfixes:
- Options Menu: '-' key should now work on U.S. keyboards as well.
- corrected a number of typos/spelling mistakes in dialogs, general text, encyclopedia etc.
- if Setup can't create "SelectedFolderTeudogar and the Alliance with Rome", it'll try to create "SelectedFolderTeudogar" instead.
Ordering the Full Version:
- reduced price from EUR 19.90 to EUR 14.95 (=US$ 17.50). (My sincere apologies to all who've purchased the Full Version at the old price. You will get a US$ 6 rebate on "Darghul" or "Teudogar II", when these games are released, or alternatively, if you feel really upset at having paid the old price, I will refund the excess EUR 4.95 to you with PayPal/Send-Money.)
- added Western Union money orders as an additional payment option.
Misc:
- Help Menu: added access to readme.txt (help file concerning technical questions). (Before, you could only access this file over the Options Menu.)
- graphics system: added detailed error and diagnostic messages.
- removed saved games' anti-patching checking. If you wish to manipulate your saved games, you're no longer prevented from doing so.
- User's Manual: Added some additional information on bartering.
Good stuff! Give Teudogar a whirl if you haven't already. There are 1 comments on this article. Click here to comment.
Teudogar and the Alliance with Rome interview ( Interview ) posted by Vault Dweller on Mon 22 December 2003, 18:51:39 More info on Teudogar and the Alliance with Rome - More info on Wolf Mittag
Wolf Mittag of Teudogar and the Alliance with Rome fame has taken a lot of time to answer our questions about his new game
4. I played the demo which I recommend to all our readers, and I couldn't help but notice that there are magical weapons and wizardry skills. How does that fit into a historically authentic RPG?
I included wizardry into the game exactly in order to make it historically authentic: When you're playing "Teudogar", I want you to feel like a genuine Germanic barbarian - and that includes superstitiousness.
People strongly believed in wizardry, and this belief probably made it actually effective. E.g., if you believed in blessings, knowing that you'd been blessed would free you from worrying about a possible defeat. This would enhance your concentration and courage, thereby actually improving your chances of winning a duel. That fact that you attributed your success to a supernatural cause doesn't bother me as long as there is reason to believe such a "spell" genuinely worked.
This is the kind of "magic" included in "Teudogar". It's not about gaining instant victory by pulverizing your enemies, but rather about tilting the odds in your favor by giving you confidence, or by demoralizing your enemies. Today we'd consider it plain autosuggestion, psychology, placebo effects, or manipulation; yet it was equally effective when it was called "magic" and its effects were attributed to higher powers' interference.
That's actually a great way to handle "Magic" in a realistic game world. As George Constanza once said "It's not a lie if you believe it"

Official Teudogar forum opens ( Site news ) posted by Saint_Proverbius on Thu 18 December 2003, 14:36:11 More info on Teudogar and the Alliance with Rome
For those who want to talk about Teudogar, the recently released historical based CRPG with heavy hommage to the Ultima series, the official forum for the game has openned. Wolf Mittag, one of the developers, is already quite active in asking what people like, what they want improved, and so forth. So, you can always give the 6MB demo a whirl and then pop off some feedback there.
Hey, it's well worth it if you like CRPGs heavy on detail in areas other than the graphics.
