Jagged Alliance 3D post mortem interview ( Interview )
posted by Vault Dweller on Tue 12 September 2006, 20:01:42
More info on Jagged Alliance 3D

Remember the Jagged Alliance 3D drama? As you may know it eventually ended with the cancellation of the game. AG has asked both parties - Vitaly Shutov, GFI's head of PC product development, and Richard Therrien, VP product development of SFI - some questions to clarify the situation:

There is a rumor that MiST land proposed a very drastic re-imagination of Jagged Alliance in a first version of the JA3D design document — it was more of a traditional RTS game, complete with large battlefields, light armored vehicles and artillery. Later, some of the ideas surfaced in another MiST land's game — Warfare. Can you either shoot down this rumor or confirm it?

VS: Yes, we planned to have long-range artillery, but it would be available only to enemy forces. They would be able to launch a strike if the player had failed to destroy artillery in an adjacent sector before taking on a next mission. We wanted playable tanks and some other vehicles. But we, as trite as it sounds, didn't have enough resources to pull that off, because it's really hard to realize this kind of stuff in a game where everything can be broken, destroyed or razed. That's why these ideas were saved for Jagged Alliance 3.

RT: I don't remember having been approached with a RTS model for JA3D. This is something they may have discussed internally and apparently did since they later came out with some sort of real-time version.

The idea that did come up was to have a 'smart pause' system fairly early on and MiST land's argument was that the game needed to evolve. To this I had to apply my veto, as I did not and do not want to have multiple Jagged Alliance games with different tactical rules and since the turn-based system of JA is not broken, I would rather build on it.
Needed to evolve? Motherfuckers.

It is not unusual when a new developer gets to work on a known game system or franchise for them to tend to steer its essence in another direction. I guess this is one way of appropriating the project, marking it with one's own touch. It is probably a challenge too to deliver something that would outdo the original making it a different beast in the process.
Indeed.

Jagged Alliance 3D posers and ponderings at GameZone ( Interview )
posted by Saint_Proverbius on Thu 27 July 2006, 19:59:19
More info on Jagged Alliance 3D

GameZone has an interview with Max Tumin about MIST Land's big score, Jagged Alliance 3D. The interview covers such topics as cancellation rumors, graphics, and this:

Q: Does this title take the gameplay of the franchise in a new direction or do you rely on the tried-and-true mechanics of the previous titles in the series?

Max:
We are using the original game mechanics from JA1-2 as it was planned by Strategy First and because we think that the original game’s mechanics and combat system is almost perfect (thanks to our predecessors). So we have tried to do our best to expand tactical opportunities without reworking the original stuff.

I wouldn't mind a better character system, but the mechanics were pretty good in the sequel.

JA3D posers and pontifications at Strategy Core ( Interview )

More info on Jagged Alliance 3D

Strategy Core has a fairly long interview with Elena Melnikova of MISTLand about Jagged Alliance 3D. After the whole real time vs. turn based debockle many moon ago, I'm a little leery of this project. Anyway, here's a bit on the mission stuff:

How non-linear is the game? Are there some missions that have to be completed?
Yes, there are main missions that must be completed before you continue the game. The player can choose whether or not to do the side missions. But again, the idea is to stay within the Jagged Alliance universe, not to create a game far outside what fans have loved in the past.

Funny, I don't remember linear missions in Jagged Alliance 2.

JA3D prefun at Hooked Gamers ( Preview )

More info on Jagged Alliance 3D

Hooked Gamers has a preview of Jagged Alliance 3D. Here's a nifty cool bit on the game, which sounds peachy to me:

An interesting twist to the main plot is that it's possible to switch sides. There are four main factions in the game and a number of smaller ones. Each has their own agenda but... so do you this time around. At this time, it's unspecified when and how you can switch sides, but apparently the player will have to the ability to do so, depending on choices made earlier in the game. Besides the former government and the revolutionaries, there's mention of a UN contingent, roving bands and ticked-off farmers wanting their land back so that they can go back to their former lives.

FLIP FLOP!

Thanks, Falconer!

Games Factory gobbles up MiST land South ( Company news )

More info on Jagged Alliance 3D - More info on MISTLand

According to a press release on GFI's site, the Russian publisher has decided to buy MiST land South, developers of such hits as Paradise Cracked, COPS2170: The Power Of Law and ALFA: Antiterror (*cough*) and the upcoming Jagged Alliance 3D (*cough hack cough*).

GFi company is proud to inform about the acquisition of Zelenograd studio MiST land South and all its holdings, and also of àn assignment of Vitaly Shutov - MiST land South’s president – to Development Director of PC-projects of GFi company. One of the key terms of the deal is the organization of producing center on the basis of MiST land South, which creative and managing potential would be directed to cooperation with young developers to carry their projects from concept stage to release.
I was always pretty sure all Russian games came from the same mythical land of exaggerated features and broken promises anyways. This really just cements that notion.

Jagged Alliance 3D Screens at Worthplaying. ( Preview )
posted by Astromarine on Tue 26 July 2005, 08:56:18
More info on Jagged Alliance 3D - More info on MISTLand

Worthplaying put up a few new screens for Jagged Alliance 3D right here. The screens themselves are uneventful. Relatively sucky, but nothing soul-destroying. What I am REALLY curious about though, is something else. First, though, here's a quote from one of our last news stories about this game here:

As it was stated before, Jagged Alliance 3D is the sequel of the famous series of tactical turn-based games, presenting the new level of quality and following the best traditions of previous games. The unique turn-based system, high game world interaction, true physic and well-know characters - everything to make happy even the most zealous fans of JA.

This quote is from Svetlana Alexeeva, PR manager at Game Factory Interactive, publishers for MISTLand. It comes in response to that shitstorm about JA3D being made realtime behind Strategy First's backs, and is pure damage control. Now, here's a nice quote from the Worthplaying article, Main Features section:
Real-time gameplay with pause

MISTLand just pwnz00rz j00.

Oh, and just in case you thought the game was at least being professionally developed and marketed, here's a quote explaining the mission system:
Game contains ~20 missions, who include obligatory and several unnecessary missions. Passing unnecessary missions, the player lightens pass of obligatory missions for himself, what means that the more unnecessary missions of the episode the player passes, the more easier it will be for him to execute the main mission of the episode.

UPDATE: Just got a clarification from Worthplaying, saying that the features list they quoted was from an outdated version of the MISTLand site. It's been replaced by the new one, which clearly stated the combat is turn-based, though it is much more vague than it's previous incarnation.

Game Factory Interactive tries to clear up JA3D commotion ( Game news )
posted by Spazmo on Mon 16 May 2005, 13:39:06
More info on Jagged Alliance 3D - More info on Game Factory Interactive

Svetlana Alexeeva, PR manager at Game Factory Interactive, who seem to be publishing MiSTLand's Jagged Alliance titles somewhere, sent us this email to attempt to demystify the recent events surrounding the transformation of JA3D into African Alliance.

Jagged Alliance 3D was not canceled! Its development runs according to the schedule and very soon the audience will see new details of the project.

Moreover, Mist Land development team is preparing to start the Jagged Alliance 3 (logical JA2 sequel) development. This project is on pre-production stage now and more information on it will be available later.

At the same time Mist Land South is in developing real time tactical strategy titled African Alliance. The official presentation of this project will take place at this year E3 show. This project has original story-line, unique style and characters and it’s not related to Jagged Alliance series. As far as we understand, this unannounced project was the reason that brought chaos to news lines and provoked false gossips about “one more Jagged Alliance”.
African Alliance will be announced in the nearest time. And official page of this project, where you could find more info about the game, will be open soon and could be found on Mist Land’s website! So, watch for our news and wait for official press-releases!
Yes... MiSTLand just spontaneously decided to make a game that's almost identical to Jagged Alliance except in real time... For some reason, I'm reminded of Killzig's Fallout Fantasy newspost way back when.

Internet DRAMA alert! JA3D RT vs TB ( Game news )
posted by Vault Dweller on Sun 08 May 2005, 00:41:08
More info on Jagged Alliance 3D - More info on MISTLand

As you all know, JA3D, a RT game that, according to one of the developers, was supposed to attract new players to the franchise and test cool new features (like RT) for the real JA3, is now officially TB. What most of you don't know is that there is an internet drama going on right now on many Russian forums, and that the horror that our readers have witnessed today - two retarded posts - is only the beginning! The Russians are finally coming!

Anyway, I've received an email with a rough translation of the drama. The damn thing is too long and really stupid, so I'll post only the whining of the developers (napalm) and the most prominent idiots:

Napalm:
Yes, I really think that RT is more interesing than TB at least that's how we developed it. Everyone who played it was very excited! ... It's sad that a lot of work was wasted and many cool RT features won't be used and that would make a poor game.

I prefer to make instead of TB a non-linear RT with multiple startings and endings than a linear mission-based TB.

(Many people tried to clarify that bs and to understand why he can't make a non-linear TB game, but no clear answer was received. It looks like they didn't have much, other then some retarded RT ideas, and now they are blaming the lack of content on the switch - VD)

The idiots:
I hoped that it will be original and ambitios project, but they screwed that with TB. Can you at least make JA3 RT? I will go kill capitalists on their forums.
...
TB will kill all orginality of the game
...
Let's use Fallout Tactics as example. It had good implementation of RT and TB. I started playing in TB, switched to RT and liked dynamic battles and never switched back to TB.

So, that's pretty much the story. Throw in some threats to kill Richard Therrien, end their own stupid lives, more napalm's whining about waste of great RT ideas that NOBODY FUCKING ASKED FOR, and you'll get the idea.

JA3D turn based after all ( Game news )
posted by Ausir on Thu 05 May 2005, 15:52:36
More info on Jagged Alliance 3D - More info on MISTLand

According to this thread (in Russian) in the MISTLand forum, Strategy First forced MISTLand to make Jagged Alliance 3D turn based after all, after their Russian publisher announced that it's going to be real-time. Vitaly Shutov AKA Napalm of MISTLand says that because they have to convert the game to TB, the release date is currently TBA.

Cheers, operf1!

Jagged Alliance 3D Q&A at CRPG.ru ( Interview )
posted by Saint_Proverbius on Wed 20 April 2005, 16:13:33
More info on Jagged Alliance 3D

Russian CRPG gaming site CRPG.ru have an interview posted with Yaroslav Astakhov of MISTLand about Jagged Alliance 3D. There's 19 questions, but I figured this was the important one:

CRPG.ru: What’s the effect of turning combat into "real-time with pause" mode? Is it the simplest version, or can we customize autopause settings and adjust the game speed?

MiST land–South:
We made autopause completely customizable, and player can choose the events that trigger it. But you can turn the pause on at any time you like and you can also adjust the game speed.

The real-time combat offers many possibilities that are impossible and unnecessary in turn-based mode. Our goal is to demonstrate that the real-time combat doesn't aways mean mindless arcade, and can be deep and thoughtful.

Right, because mindless arcade games are more interactive.
