For fucks sake... And I was just yesterday contemplating its unchanging "TBD" release date. Though, it's probably for the best. A game like this needs a full, dedicated studio, not a bunch of modders.

That guy sounds like journalists reporting news about whats going on right now in Europe.
Would that be good for sales or not ?

Not likely. Paradox already gave EvW a shitload of extra development time, and even planned on putting it to an open beta this month. The only probable motivation at this point is that Shit Is Never Getting Done.

- Why not release what you got as an open beta as said before?
: This is because Steam will not let us release it in it's current state, and it would cost a lot of money and time to re-write it to be distributed outside of Steam.

They should contact the pirate scene for some tips on how to quickly remove steam from a game :smug:

A butthurt post from the forum:

"All the Paradox games I see (the newest ones) seem to be simplified and to make money. I will return to Total War and CoH."

.. Oh the irony.

...and Steam refusing to release it in its current state.
Steam has quality control ?
yeah, but one with really low standards. if they refused this, the state of the game must have somewhat resembled big rigs: over the road racing.... unless they only support low resolutions. that's also a big no-no for steam quality control.

While I was looking forward to this game and am a little sad to see it is cancelled I am glad that it is steamworks integration that is their downfall.
that's what you got from "it's in such a sorry state that even steam early access won't take it"? that steam integration rather than developer incompetence is to blame?

From a quote in the strategyinformer news article in the OP:
"In its current form East vs West can't be released on Steam as they won't allow it, and removing Steamworks integration would take too long and cost a lot of money."
sorry to piss on your parade but:
Today it's our sad duty to inform you that it has been decided to cancel the game "East vs West". We at Paradox Interactive have the utmost respect for BL Logic and this is not a decision that has been taken lightly—quite the contrary—but ultimately we are a publisher and our actions and decisions must reflect that.

As the project has been severly delayed we dont think that open beta / early acccess could, within our desired timeline, meet the set criteria.

It has been a journey of ups and downs since we started the development of East Vs West back in May 2011. We wish each other nothing but the best with future endeavors.

We also would like to thank the developers for their hard work and their tremendous effort, as well as the fans for their long term commitment and their never ending support.

Yours sincerely
Fredrik Wester, Lennart Berg, Gellert Keresztes
the criteria he is talking about are their own, btw, not valve's. the "steam refusing the game" bit was from a community manager who misunderstood something and later clarified it, but the announcement itself contained nothing about valve or steam.
even if it were true, check early access games. for valve to refuse this it must have been much less than barely playable or outright damaging to the machines it is run on.
in both of these scenarios the ultimate culprit is developer incompetence (especially since the game was supposed to come in both steamworks and non-steamworks flavors).
