Ladies and gentlemen, once again Jaesun has gathered the Codex and forced it to vote on its favourite computer role-playing game pastime. After tallying and compiling, Jaesun sent us the finished list of the ten games the Codex just wouldn't be able to live without. Simultaneously, Felipepepe decided the decline in this place wasn't strong enough, and he set out to gather votes for a similar list of the Codex' favourite console RPGs.

Today, we bring you the results of the polls. Will the final list be monocled? Will it be scandalous? Is it incline? Is it decline? We ask some of the Codex' staff, resident mascots as well as random people on the forum willing to contribute, about their comments on the games the Codex found to be the greatest RPGs ever made. Read the full article to see the results!

That monocle'd troll handing out the prize ribbon ought to be an emoticon.

Anyway, as for the lists themselves, it's definitely skewed around games released in the 90s/early 00s. The list is more about Codex's most popular RPGs, rather than the best RPGs. Not really surprising, given the demographics of the Codex (would assume most Codexers are young adults in their 20s or 30s who were/are fans of Black Isle, Troika, etc) and the increased exposure of the games industry in that time period, but before it went to shit.

Not like the writeups and commentary go into depth (lol DU hates RTwP), but it'd be a good starting point for newbies wanting to find out the Codex Approved™ cRPG list. Which I imagine would be the purpose of all this.

Good job, guys.

That said, how the fuck Icewind Dale gets into the top 10 most popular games here baffles me.

^ No secret RedScum, I've revealed that before. Never wondered why that page hates Enhanced Edition and constantly brings Kickstarter and RPG news, eh?

Fightin' the good fight. If only I were in full control :M

Jaesun, wouldn't it be nice to also post the full CRPG list around here, for easy access? Perhaps Grunker edit both of them as spoilers in the article or something...

You gotta get with Jaesun for that one. He posts the PC List here, I can link both as spoilers in the OP.

Wow, decided to break my lurking to voice my disappointment in those polls, especially the fact that only 3 of the top 10 Computer RPG's are even 90's games.

Especially ToEE, Arcanum and Vampire, which are downright unplayable without mods. Even Fallout 2 had over 800 vanilla bugs left in the game after official patches, Killap over at NMA recently discovered at least 20 more vanilla bugs and this is 14 years later, imagine how many more of lurking in the code itself. I'm strongly of the opinion that early dungeon crawlers like Bard's Tale II on Apple IIG, Darkside of Xeen, Star Trail, Crusaders of the Dark Savant, and others, deserve a place on that list. These games were good straight out of the box.

Edit: Also the JRPG list is bad too, Shin Megami Tensei I & II are missing, yet they managed to add the PS2 game?

That's some very valuable contributions by DU.

Anyways, I'll start the flamewar: Arcanum was overrated, didn't deserve its spot. Similarly Morrowind is there only because of the TES exodus which infected us with a heap of unvaluable posters. And don't get me started on Baldurs gate.

Well, at least Diablo "rpgcodex game of the decade" II wasn't on the list. Here's to the small things in life.

fallout shouldn't even be acknowledged by a true RPG fan.

I was flat on my ass for that one

At least that guy seems to get hated on by the others to some degree though. I wonder what a "true RPG fan" is, maybe someone should ask him?

More like best RPGs of the late 90s/early 00s (and New Vegas).

This is so clearly a 20-something'er's idea of the top RPGs of all time.

I am disappointed in your level of :obviously: Codex. Smells of :decline:

We've had polls like this one the forum since the beginning and the results are always the same. Fallout, Planescape, Fallout II and then a lot of Troika and Infinity games. Only difference between the new posters and oldies was that the mayority of the older ones actually knew and played stuff like Dark Sun: Shattered Lands, Realms of Arkania and Darklands. Nowadays most people don't go further back in their knowledge of rpg's than the late 90's or early 00's.
