With Gothic III looming on the RPG horizon with its super-flashy graphics, the visuals from its predecessor Gothic II might seem to be getting a bit humbler. This has prompted a fellow by the name of Postal to release an Enhanced Texture Pack for Gothic II to kick the game's sights up a notch. Follow the link to Gothic @ RPGDot for a download and some screenshots.

Am I the only one who thinks that this is no better than the original textures, just different ones? They still look like low resolution crap to me, and in some places are worse than the originals.

I guess I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up; I'm remarkably underwhelmed with this. I was hoping for something with genuinely improved textures that still reflect the original design, a la the many excellent Morrowind texture packs, but this... this... gah. "Look, guys, we took the character out of thatched roofs, mowed the grass in a checkerboard pattern, and gave stone floors a more festive pattern!"

I agree with it being bad on not being an improvement on what was already there instead being a total change.

Some of the natural stone looks alright, but the buildings and some other stuff are bad. Especially the buildings.

The System Shock 2 texture upgrade was what I was hoping it would be equal to.
