A new update for Wasteland 2 Kickstarter is now up. It includes an elaboration on what exactly a party based cRPG is, as well as a new video Q&A with Brian Fargo.

I did want to give some detail on what the definition of a party based game was since there seems to be some confusion. In specific terms you will be creating and customizing four Rangers at the start of the game and typically you would give each of them different skills to create experts in certain fields. Skills in Wasteland range from lock-picking to bomb disarming to even toaster repair. This creates the dynamic of having players taking very different approaches to exploring the world. In addition there will be three slots for non-player characters to join the party. They will be similar in most respects to a player created member except you will not have 100% control over them. They will have quirks that could range from momentary indecision with them not firing their weapons at an opportune time, to being trigger happy and wasting ammo or even stealing from your characters. This opens up a wide range of possibilities on which NPCs you decide to have join your ranks.

And while we have brought Obsidian into the mix, I think it is important to note that this is my baby, and I will be producing it and managing the programming here at inXile. There seemed to be some confusion on whether it will be a joint production, but the main facets of our involvement are with the use of their tools for asset integration and the design talents of Chris Avellone. Part of the charm and variety of Wasteland 1 came from the way different designers would approach their areas, and I wanted the same dynamic again. Only this time we have added the brains of Chris into the mix, and I am betting he will add ideas to Wasteland 2 that would have never been in the game otherwise.

Also, new t-shirts, yay!

The sudden Chris showing up in Q&A was :what: for me. They are checking our forums or what? Oh, and it all sounds great.

4 ranger party, 3 followers. Top-down exploration with isometric town map and combat most likely. Turn-based combat mostly taking inspiration from Jagged Alliance and the like. Story set right after Wasteland has you going into California.

...

Sounds good to me!

It feels so weird to actually have a game in the CRPG genre to look forward to with actual hope that it might be good.

Awesome update! Lots of new info, and an Avellone appearance! I am even more pumped up for this game now -- I think it might reach critical mass soon.

Not me, because I can't afford it. Not that it matters much. The greatest game of all time, Prisoner of Ice, has already been made.

I hate myself.

Also of note: 500 new $250 slots were made available for those who want MCA's autograph, plus a nice self-aggrandizing t-shirt at $150.

Sadly I can't afford $250 for a single game, especially with all those great kickstarter projects poping out every month...:(

Mayans were right. The world ends in 2012, because 2013 is just too awesome.

I liked everything he had to say, still feel good about the project.

I can't help but think that the top-down/iso part he mentioned could be better resolved with tiered quick-combat options. I can't think of a game that's ever done that before...but he spoke a lot about customization.

It would be really cool if the JA2 folks could get their deep tactical combat, and those on the other end of the spectrum who want 30 second encounters can have that also, including options in between.

Rather than a difficulty slider, a 'depth of combat' setting would be cool. Some battles vs. named mini-bosses are worth savoring, you want to get into the nitty gritty...random trash mobs are good too...because if you want to grind xp (like in wasteland) they are there for that...but maybe the player would prefer quick combatting those.

I'm sure it would be difficult to design, but after reading the enemy composition I'd love to have a combat depth selection like these before combat starts:
  • 10-minute combat session, deep tactical
  • 5-minute
  • 2-minute
  • 1-minute
  • 30 secs
  • AI calc (no graphics)
Anyway, that's the only thing I would change based on what I hear in that video.

While not necessarily a bad idea, this would be enormously expensive to implement, and not feasible for that reason.

If players feel like they must have an option to hasten or skip combat in an RPG (through game options, not in-character means!), then something is either wrong with the RPG, or with the players.

Is that modern art, a declaration of love, or just to show how Brian Fargo has always the same expression?
