Gamebanshee decided to take a look at Larian Studio's recently released Dragon Knight Saga. Since they reviewed Ego Draconis earlier, this review focusses mainly on the Flames of Vengeance expansion.

Overall, my reaction to Flames of Vengeance was about the same as my reaction to Ego Draconis. I thought the quests were fun, and I enjoyed hunting around for hidden buttons and secret rooms, but the combat was sort of a drag, and the fights (even the end boss fight) provided no challenge whatsoever. If you still haven't played Ego Draconis, then my recommendation is easy -- go ahead and buy The Dragon Knight Saga because the games are entertaining enough, and the bundle makes them a bargain. But if you played Ego Draconis before, then things are a bit tougher. Do you spend twice as much money for a bundle that will invalidate your saved games, or save money and perhaps never see some of the gameplay improvements? Perhaps the best course of action is simply to wait until Larian releases the promised patch to update Ego Draconis to the new engine or until the bundle drops to a price that's more accommodating to your wallet.

The endfight in FoV was hell on earth on hard difficulty. But I only played FoV, not the DKS, maybe they made it easier.

About that: does there exist a comprehensive list of the changes from ED + FoV to DKS? The information I've seen is pretty vague. I know that DKS is easier than the original and is supposed to have improved graphics. It also makes optional a part of the game involving the flying fortresses that was commonly complained about in reviews of ED for its tedium. Is there anything else? And what exactly was changed about the gameplay to make it easier?

Also, does anyone have a sense of whether the patching in of nightmare mode helped bridge the difficulty gap? That's the main reason I'm considering picking up ED + FoV instead of DKS; I'd rather have a more challenging game than one with shinier armor.

Trust me, DKS in Nightmare mode can be pretty challanging in places.

Fucking great game btw - worth every penny.
