So I am planning to start playing Xenonauts. Is there any mods recommended for first playthrough ?

Community edition is a must. It adds a ton of new maps. Without it you'll be fighting a lot on the same 2-3 maps.

Eh. There's a map set that has official endorsement that you can download from the launcher and that combined with the introduction of a lot of the CE mechanics into vanilla with the most recent patch makes for a solid semi-vanilla playthrough.

Nice to see Chaotic Begatic finally snagged up an actually good game.
Other than the lore and map mods that are included with the launcher, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Xenonauts isn't a game where mods are necessary on a first play through.

Another nice feature of the CE map pack is that maps are a lot more crowded than vanilla. This gives enemies more places to hide in, so they can jump out and murder your dudes.

Short of breaching UFOs, most vanilla maps let you whittle down enemies from outside their reaction fire range dur to the open(ish) nature of most maps.
