Zhenar Xhan reached his command desk:
"Route to the Green Company headquarters as planned, our mission here is finished."
The propulsion system activated the distortion field, propelling the battle group towards their destination.
While leaving behind the plasma consumed planet the commander hardly felt any sense of victory, in fact an impeding sensation of defeat pressed him to go back.
The battle was not over, of this he was sure.

Reports continued to arrive into the briefing room, where Karl Chas and the delegations of the Representativity and the
Directorate were attending.

The tension was still lingering in the air when they received Norian Dhen' s account of Karhyen's battle.
"Gentlemen, I gladly inform you that the enemy has been repelled, suffering staggering losses in his continue assaults against our forces."
The announcement of the Battle Marshall greatly lightened the mood.

The Honorary Consul Ferrygan maintained a professional attitude while hearing the news:
"Congratulations for this great result, I will gladly give dispositions for the Green Company to be honored in the proper way when this campaign will end."

"The same holds for the Representativity"
Added Counselor Arbhert.

They continued to observe the screens displaying the incoming data of the battle becoming more precise at every adjournment.

Karl Chas gravely observed them.
The general estimate of Norian Dhen's group losses was around twenty percent, the Battle Marshall never prefigured such a fierce battle, for now his strategy worked but he felt as something vital was escaping him.
It was in that moment that he saw two attaché in the grey-blue military attire of the Directorate approaching the Consul and whispering something to his ear, causing the darkening of the Consul's expression.

Almost immediately an officer of the Green Company entered the room with an urgent communication.
While reading the communicate the Marshall get a glimpse of two secretaries in the white garments of the Representativity approaching Counselor Arbhert.

He could distinctly feel the gaze of all that people watching him finishing to read the document.
Deep creases of preoccupation furrowed his brow when he raised his eyes.

"We have received a communication by Captain Damian Houser, of Zhenar Xhan's battle group, he leaved the formation at the orders of his commander to investigate an echo anomaly registered when they entered enemy territory."
The light euphoria of few moments ago had completely vanished, Karl Chas felt the scrutiny of his interlocutors as in front a martial court.
"After reaching the Xhanadar wall he had confirmation that the echo was produced by a battlecruiser similar to the ones composing Zhenar Xhan's battle group."
The face of the Consul and the Counselor were as carved in stone while hearing the report.

The Marshall continued with a metallic taste in his mouth.
"At the Xhanadar wall the unknown atrocraft met two other similar vessels, afterwards they proceeded, entering the territory of the Commonwealth."
Now a ice cold grip serrated the chest of the Marshall.
"After cautiously following them at a distance Captain Houser is asking for orders, the formation of the three astrocraft is approaching the central sectors, no more delay is possible without serious danger, from the observation his crew has conducted the three battlecruisers seems similar in every aspect to the new battlecruisers the Commonwealth has recently commissioned, thus, similar capabilities should be expected, the usage of Jehnizar weaponry cannot be excluded."

After extremely tense moments the Honorary Consul spoke in an atone voice.
"You must surely realize the gravity of the moment, obviously the battle plan devised by the Green Company had some fatal flaw, even if this turn of events was highly unexpected, I concede this."
He continued to observe Karl Chas as his face become grey as ashes.
"For now only three battlecruisers are mentioned, but we can't exclude the presence of others, thus I am forced to officially request the imposition of an emergency martial law on the whole of the Commonwealth to contrast every possible threat and investigate what very clearly looks like treason from one or more high ranking officials, from now on I will assume direct control of all the military operations until the Directorate will issue a formal order."

"As emissary of the Representativity I submit to the authority of the Honorary Consul until a formal declaration will be issued."
This was the statement of Counselor Arbhert.

Now they both looked at the Marshall, they were de facto relieving Karl Chas from command and putting the Green Company under the command of the Directorate, formally he could still oppose the decision, but surely he was also aware of the implications, direct conflict with the Directorate and, likely, without any support from the Representativity.

In fact they were already putting the blame on him for that situation, even if in an indirect manner, for now.
And even if he didn't support their decision wouldn't have took long for a formal declaration, and an open conflict if he would have continued to persist in his position.

"Finally the true enemy bared his face in front of me."
Thought Karl Chas while confronting the greatest menace of his entire career.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________

A)Defend the prerogatives of the Marshall and refuse to submit to the authority of the Honorary Consul.
There are already various battlegroups deployed to confront an eventuality like this, such measure is unnecessary.
Also, the Green Company always acted as counterbalance to Directorate's power, this is very akin to a coup d'etat.

B)Relinquish your position in favor of the Honorary Consul, better not risk a confrontation that could end in a civil war.

C)Take your time, say that you will abide only to a formal declaration of the Directorate, and that for now you will continue to observe your duties as Battle Marshall.

Gamma Protocol

Karl Chas calmly returned the stares of the

delegations of the Representativity and the Directorate observing him.

The tension was palpable, a line had been definitely crossed.

"As appointed Battle Marshall I inform the Honorary Consul that the Green Company will continue its operations as usual, offering its collaboration, if needed, to participate in further deliberations."

This was, despite the formalities, a full rejection of the Consul's proposal, but more than that, the Marshall reserved for the Green Company its peculiar prerogatives to be an equal participant in the decisions of the Directorate.

This not only remarked the independence of the Green Company, but in that particular moment was an open challenge to any imposition of a martial law.

Ferrygan maintained his impassible attitude while hearing this.
"We are honored of the Green Company collaboration in this delicate situation."
He said in an atone voice.
"If you would excuse me, I must depart immediately to ensure the implementation of the necessary actions for the safety of the Commonwealth."
His eyes were dead cold saying this.
Rigidly he got up from the seat and reached for the door, followed by the rest of the delegations.

Counselor Arbhert abandoned the room without proffering a word, openly ignoring the Marshall.

Karl Chas mantained his composure as a soldier while issuing the orders to alert all the battle groups of the possible danger while following the original directives.

"Communicate, also, to all the patrols to reach the nearest base of the Green Company in their sector of pertinence, furthermore, declare a general alert for all the commanders."

Expected orders due to the situation, the appointed officers were ready to leave tocommunicate the Marshall's decisions when Karl Chas stopped them.

"Inform all the commanders that from this moment the Gamma Protocol takes immediate effect and to act accordingly."

All the officers in the room looked at the Marshall with incredulity.

The Gamma Protocol was intended as a series of procedures aimed to permit to the Green Company to operate independently from the Directorate in case of emergency.

That would meant that any decision not expressly availed by the Battle Marshall was considered null and void, and that
every bases would have operated in total autonomy from the authorities of the Commonwealth.

A plan devised in case of a non functioning central government due to an alien assault menacing to taking control of the key sectors of the Commonwealth, or a full scale civil war.

A cruel smile manifested on the face of Velhar Kraszyek when he received the communication from the headquarters, his
old plans came back to haunt him with three ghosts born from his machinations, only to offer him the opportunity to turn the tables on his political opponents.

The Gamma Protocol meant that an open confrontation with certain elements of the Directorate wasn't all that impossible now, and having the Green Company as an ally was something that he would have never imagined to hope for.

But was too soon for these thoughts, three battlecruisers to confront wasn't a light matter.

He contemplated his options.

His ship and the other two command ships had sensors with which was possible to track the incoming enemy battlecruisers, the support of Damian Houser'ship should have also be considered.

However, the distortion field of those vessels greatly reduced the efficacy of his weaponry, nuclear torpedoes, electro plasma bombs and pulse cannons.
Only the outdated drill launchers would have worked flawlessly, a funny thought.

Captain Houser's astrocraft had nutron bombs tho, and so did Kraszyek three command ships, even if only two each.

The principal problem was that his battle group was divided in three at the moment.

What to do?
___________________________________________________________________________________________________

A)Await for the attack of the enemy, at this point the rest of the battle group will converge on the enemy, or confront them one by one if they attack separately, this will ensure the protection of the sectors, but will expose to danger the commander of the attacked group if all the three enemy Battlecruisers will be involved.

B)Launch a preemptive strike with your three command ships, to renounce to have the aid of the other astrocrafts is very dangerous, but there will be support from Houser tho, something not granted if the enemy will attack separately.

C)Reunite the battle group for a conjoined response, this could expose some sector to the enemy attack, but is the safest option.

After going back to the first update (the first two in particular seem to give us our very basic understanding of the Representivity vs Directorate issues and conflict) I could really work out about Kraszyek is that he prefers the Directorate and is not a fan of aliens (being from the Central Sectors).

My first thought was that we are now in the role of Kraszyek who has presumably received orders from the Directorate to prepare for military conflict with the Green Company but apparently this is not so. Is Kraszyek just a member of Green Company who happens to prefer the Directorate's style due to his personality and Central Sector upbringing?

His family is one of the most important inside the Directorate, only, is on the losing side.
The Green Company is an umbrella organization that reunites all the existent militias, however, militias always played an important role in the Commonwealth politics.
If the Green Company counterbalance the Directorate, militias created by powerful families of the Directorate counterbalance the Green Company, so to speak.
Also, militias are a way to create transversal alliances.
It's more easy to be allies when you are not forced to obey a central command, a militia can be a guarantee for both the parties involved.
However in two updates there will be an important choice that will decide the future of the Commonwealth, I will take the opportunity to outline in there the institutions of which is composed and how it came about.

Impossible to guess, really, all three could end badly...hmm, A)! What kind of commander wouldn't view his life as worth giving up for the sector he protects?

Blind Shadows

Velhar Kraszyek communicated to his officers to begun the maneuvers for reuniting the battle group and offer a unite front to the impeding menace.

"Everything is clear then'"
He said looking at Jonar Eryxhian on the communicator monitor.

The face of the Lieutenant was hard and cold while observing his ex pupil.
Despite all his efforts the tempest of emotions agitating the old veteran was manifested by the continuous slight alterations of his expression.

The 'raven' instead maintained his arrogant attitude.
Many unspoken things passed between the two men in those brief instants.
But all what was said were the formal words of a soldier to his commander.

"We are on our way to the designed coordinates."
And with this the communication ended.

Velhar switched to his other second in command, that was also his brother, Druszieck.

He didn't have the rapacious facial features of the 'raven' but whomever would have seen them together would have recognized them as brothers from the cruel line of the mouth and the receding jaw.

"We are en route for the assigned destination as by your orders Velhar."
Noticing the expression on the face of his brother he added:
"You seem in an awful good mood due to the situation."

"Shouldn't I?"
Was the gleeful response.
"The old Chas instated the Gamma Protocol, you surely understand what this entails."

"I assume that you received some kind of information that I didn't for saying so."
Inquired Druszieck.

The 'raven' answered with a soft laughter.
"There are still people loyal to us."

"Yes, I have received a 'special' report, alongside with the official communication."
Said Velhar returning serious all of a sudden.

"Seems that our 'friends' made their move. They wanted to declare the state of emergence, but Chas denied his support, now they are arranging for a special session of the Directorate to obtain a formal declaration."

A preoccupied expression appeared on Druszieck's face.
"This is clearly a maneuver for gaining the control of the Directorate, at our expenses, how these are good news? How they think to get the support of the Representativity?"
Asked anxiously to his brother.

The 'raven' waved his hand, as to dismiss something trivial.

"The Representativity are all but glorified bureaucrats, leading them by the nose will not take much, Arbhert has already offered his support, it's obvious that he is into this together with the faction inside the Directorate that want to deprive us of our authority, now they will all come out of the woodwork, not only the ones of which we already knew."

"So, we can only hope to retard the proceedings at this point."
Was Druszieck's consideration.

"More than enough, they are being awfully hasty for such a carefully planned takeover."
Mused Velhar.
"Probably something happened with their Jehnizars allies or some other unknown occurrence. What is certain is that they want to use the situation for their own advantage."

"So, you think that they are using a the same plan as yours?"
At these words the expression of the 'raven' became hard and cold, his eyes opaque as a thin veil had been posed on them.
"Even if this connection is secure there is no need to say such ill thought words."

Druszieck became pale at this response.
As many others even him was afraid of his brother's ferocity.
Nonetheless he couldn't help into thinking that the situation was very similar to the plan they devised to regain hold of their waning power as Directorate inside the Commonwealth.

A plan that never came to fruition as the contacts with the Jehnizars abruptly ceased and the reunion of the Directorate that should have issued the Declaration of Preeminence instead greatly reduced the power of their family and allies leaving them with a diminished role inside the Council.

Velhar's reaction pretty much confirmed this, here they were, the three battlecruisers that should have helped them to quell every resistance with their dissuasive power, the weapon that should have gave them the upper hand before similar vessels would have been commissioned by the Representativity.

A weapon that was now pointed against them.
A weapon which the sole apparition of it had already further marginalized them inside the Commonwealth, the issue of a formal declaration was just a mere confirmation of what was in the work for a long time and that now was reaching a quick conclusion.

Druszieck carefully weighted his words.
"Is your opinion then that they are taking advantage of this for swaying all the power in their hands?"

"It's a given:"
Answered the 'raven' without hesitation.

With caution the brother continued.
"This means that we will be reduced to mere figureheads, if not scapegoats."
And after a light pause.
"In more senses than one."

Velhar's eyes narrowed at the implication, he was well aware that if their political opponent cut their contacts with the Jehnizars and effectively substituted them they could also have proof as well of Velhar's treason.

"Don't worry, there is no way they could imply us in this, no matter how many lies they could invent."
His voice was sharp as a blade as he continued.
"Besides, the only thing that counts at the moment is the military might that one possess, from there comes all the legitimation we need."
In saying this slowly raised his hand in front of him, closing it in a tight fist.

The 'raven' put together his militia when the rest of the Commonwealth was weary of the Directorate's power, a way to create ties and give guarantees to the sectors, in this way he created a web of alliances outside of the Directorate itself, a transversal alliance comprised of almost all the central sectors.

"Druszieck, you worry yourself too much, that old ram of Karl Chas by deciding of locking horns with Consul Ferrygan and instating the Gamma Protocol has gave us a decisive advantage. Now we are the force that can change the power balance in an eventual conflict or the essential element to maintain the status quo."

"How about Zhenar Xhan?"
Replied his brother.

"Hmpf, he will follow what Chas says."
Said Velhar with a dismissive tone.
"What will really decide this is the incoming battle, our battle group against their battlecruisers."

"What do you think their objective is?"
Asked Druszieck.

The 'raven' barely considered the question.
"Wrecking havoc to be sure that martial law is declared, destroy strategic objectives that could be hostile to them, it's hard to tell, but we will find out soon enough."
With this words he closed the communication.

Kraszyek was seated at his command desk, supervising the operations for the reunification of the three groups when the special sensors he made secretly install signaled the arrival of the enemy, at full speed, Houser's battlecruiser probably was not far from them too.
So, their objective was Velhar or something made them change their original plans?
Not that this had any importance at the moment, with a grin he prepared himself, there was a hint of madness in the light of his eyes.

A)Your forces are not fully reunited, use this for offering a vast front to the enemy, in this way your astrocrafts will be less easily targeted.
However, this could possibly expose your command ships to a concentrated attack.

B)Complete the maneuvers to reunite the battle group, at the beginning you would sustain heavy losses, but afterwards you could oppose a massive artillery response, effectively saturating the battle zone with your firepower.

C)Take advantage of the nature of militias, let the troops to act in little subgroups that will lunch coordinated attacks against the enemy.

Hornets' Flights

The 'raven' immediately gave order to all his officers to divide into sub-units acting independently, like maniples of a legion.

When the three enemy vessels entered the quadrant they were hailed by flights of heavy astrocrafts targeting them with their drill launchers.

A continuous stillicide of projectiles that bypassed the energetic shields as well as the distortion field created by the
propulsion system.

A swarm of deadly hornets, that was continuously decimated by the pulse cannons of the battlcruisers.

It was an endurance contest, entire sections of the battlecruisers continued to being damaged reducing the functionality of
the ships.

Kraszyek's battle group instead was testing its resilience with the increasing number of vessels becoming inoperative or
destroyed.

The enemy put an end to that stalemate by regrouping.
Now they were offering an impressive barrage of fire, while their distortion fields and energetic shields overlapped.

Seeing the change in the enemy tactics Velhar' sub-commanders started to use their electro-plasma bombs and nuclear torpedoes, engulfing the battlecruisers in globes of ionized nuclear plasma dispersing in space.

It was an all out massacre, the holes in the formations of the attacking astrocrafts became wider and wider as time passed and the three behemots continued to resist.

In this deadly scenario made its apparition Houser's battlecruiser.

With a quick glance he grasped the situation.

Kraszyek's battle group, one of the most hostile force to reforms inside the Commonwealth was engaged in a decimation
fight.

For a moment the Captain hesitated.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

A)Intervene immediately, your attack can be decisive, and is favored by the enemy formation, you can being severely damaged in doing so tho.

B)Contact Commander Kraszyek and coordinate your attacks with him.

C)Attack from a distance, this is more safe, but will increases the losses of Kraszyek's battle group.

It's up to the players, I tried to give as much freedom as possible, letting the players to determine through their choices not only the direction of the story but the general scenario as well.
Obviously, C&C.

Alright, so we're helping the Space Old Money Racists avoid a takeover from the Space Ineffective Bureaucrats?
If so you wish.
More helping a wannabe dictator that it's losing his power against a greedy bunch comprised of vast parts of the Directorate and the Representativity, ready to pocket the Commonwealth in the name of Democracy.
The real point is that Kraszyek's militia is a power on its own, after this battle there will be a special reunion of the Field Commanders with the Battle Marshall and Wulfen, then you could decide to get along with the new powers that be, oppose them or act as a counterbalance maintaining the status quo, depending on what you would like to do Kraszyek can be an indispensable, even if not very trustworthy, ally or an enemy.

Better a competent dictatorship than an ineffective and corrupt democracy. I'd like to learn a bit more about this plotting faction. The traitors seem to have collaborated with aliens against their fellow men.

B (though please feel free to argue with me on this)
