Codex has been eagerly awaiting and playing Bethesda games at least since 2007. Skyrim was popular here before it even released. I have no idea where you got this notion that this forum is some hardcore community that doesn't jerk off to anime and shower Todd with money.
Correct.

There was a Somali Swedish poster baronjohn who made a thread "Skyrim is worse than Oblivion in every way possible" upon the release of Skyrim and it got 100+ pages in the first week. Baronjohn himself clocked a mere 200 hours on Skyrim (as per his Steam), and complained about it every step of the way.

By contrast, make a Wizardry or Might and Magic thread, and it will fill up 10 pages....in 10 years.

Mass Effect also has produced more megathreads than any other game in Codex history, and RK47's Mass Effect playthroughs are the most read on the site.

By contrast, make a ToEE Let's Play and there will be 2-3 people who follow it.

Same applies to Codex interest in other forms of entertainment. Everyone here hates Game of Thrones which has the largest TV show thread here. Make a thread about Patrick McGoohan's the Prisoner and only 5 people follow it.

I may also add that the edgiest posters are from the Third World - Skyway from Ukraine, baronjohn from Somalia, circ from Arab refugees in Finland, pre-2012 me from India (I am no longer edgy), laclonquan from Vietnam, hiver from Balkans,.etc. Being edgy about videogames is the only sense of superiority you get from being born in a Third World shithole. First Worlders don't need to prove how intelligent they are from the adult children's entertainment they consume.
Mate you are just angry that you lost your edge. Also it is fun to talk shit on stupid modern day AAA,no wonder they are more popular. While the old and the good games are things that are played and talked for a long time. Good games like ELEX DOS2 and PoE are still talked about. We have lived enough to become jaded sarcastic old gits that like to banter about games. There is not much to be said about Arcanum,BG or Vampire. If there is new Arcanum, the thread will become a mega one in no time.

Look, I used to get attacked just by mentioning BG2 (a Codex top 5 game no less), whereas now I see posters casually declaring their love of Skyrim (or such shit) in random threads. Maybe this is a dark underbelly that I had somehow missed? Hopefully, the Codex is not going to end up being another place where I have to explain to Bethestards how games are supposed to work. This is just an example, of course.

Sorry, people from 2015 don't get to comment on others' tastes

OK, but still the Codex is the only RPG home I have ever known. So I am worried.

Aside from that NeoGAF imploded a while ago and all their forumites have been splitting up to forums across the internet. I doubt we have a large influx of NeoGAF users but I wouldn't be surprised if we started getting a few more fans of so-called "modern RPGs" like Skyrim suddenly joining us.

I guess this could be it. Can't we put them all on a Greek island or sth?

The love for skyrim can only come from two things.

Porn mods
Anime mod

Just ignore it and go on.

They are millions. Ignoring them can't be the correct course of action. They will take over.

CROOKED MODERATORS happened! Crooked Moderator (((Infinitron))) impared my freedom of speech by blocking my access to GAMERGATE thread. He is probably afraid of MAGAmen like myself rouining the satanist schemes of his fellow SJW marxists in the game industry.
CODEXERS, you have a (((wolf))) n your midst! DRAIN THE SWAMP!

There was a similar topic about 7 years ago.

And what does that prove ? Honestly, I don't know. I mean if You can find similar thread from say, around 2003 then I can see what your point would be. But with this, no clue.
Hypothetically speaking decline might have just progressed slowly over the years. I'm not saying that's the case - but logically the fact that such thread from 7 years ago exists is not in itself a proof that decline is not real.

I am trying to remember when RPG Codex was ever a "monocle" forum.

If you see archived threads, you will see that the release of Oblivion caused a flood of Morrowind refugees yearning for the good old days of Morrowind. Don't get me wrong, Morrowind is a fascinating game, but hardly something that will make you look sophisticated. But Morrowind became the standard of elite RPG once Oblivion was released.

Rosh and Vault Dweller did use to talk about how shit BG2 is and how great Fallout is, but BG2 is this forum's most popular game (and deservedly so). What seems to have happened was that Rosh, VD, and Skyway were the most visible posters here, but that was never the majority opinion.

Oldfags probably just miss the feeling of being in a forum with a smaller userbase of like minded people (NMA refugees).

Is that what happened? They just closed it off?

I jwoke up today and couldn't get onto the thread.

I don't post that much, but i did enjoy coming here and reading what everyone was posting.

It was a refreshing breath of fresh air to read about stuff that wasn't REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE 24/7.

I'm sorry to see it go.

You're going to have to wait about five months before your full Codex experience is unlocked. The library was hidden for some reason.

This site has been around for four or five years now, and at least 75% of that time, there's been the obligatory, "Oh no! The Codex is dying!" posts. I mean at the VERY least, 75%. It probably started two or three days after the site went public, but I don't remember that far back. In fact, this site was probably doomed before Calis opened up the text editor to write the first bit of PHP script for this place.

There were similar threads even in the early days 2003-2005, about the decline of the forum, crpgs etc. If some search-wizard could find some of them, it would be very interesting...

Grab the Codex by the pussy
I think the problem lies in two things: the vocabulary we use and our personal arrogance. If you think in terms of “decline/incline” terminology, it is easier to assume that everything was perfect in an idyllic golden age. Once you realize that you live in a world of idiocy and shit, you start to look for the culprits of decline and bitch about how things got worse. That lead us to the “personal arrogance” bit. We naturally assume that the culprit must be somewhere else because we are arrogant enough to assume that we are 100% coherent in our tastes, aesthetic evaluations and standards. It is always someone else who does things wrong because we are perfect. Since most people tend to think like that, it is obvious that everyone (or at least most people?) are dead wrong. I like to believe that I have immaculate tastes, but that’s probably a self-delusion. There is no decline. There is only the present. The present is created by people. People, every single one us, are shit. Be humble and try to become a better person before you can complain about the poor state of things, because it is probably your fault.
