What do you want/not want in Wasteland 2

Well, here's what Brian Fargo (the guy in charge of WL2) has to say on the subject:

    - The prospect of a Wasteland 2 has sparked a lot of talk amongst gamers and I'm sure you've received an overwhelming amount of feedback. What do you feel are the most common features people want to see in a Wasteland 2 and do they match up with the features you and your team envisage for the game?

Based on what I have been reading it seems we are in sync with what the players want to see. The beauty of fan funding and the internet is that we can be communicating with the fan base along the way to solicit input for the broad strokes of things. Should the art style be bleak, muted and desolate or does a Borderlands 2 look appeal to the fans. We are going to get on the same page up front. I've responded to some interviews on my sensibility thoughts and so far the fans seem to like what they are hearing. There is a definite appetite to play this more classic style of game and I certainly want to make it! To be a little more specific this is going to be a top down, party and turn based game which has always been a great formula. It will also be a larger party most likely following the same vibe of the first Wasteland with 4 player characters and 3 NPC's in your group. I always thought having just 3 players in a group didn't feel like a real party based game.

Whats wrong with 2D? I assume we count games like Jagged Alliance, Arckanum and Planescape Torment as 2D ("pseudo isometric", but no real 3D models). Top down view can look good enough - and doesn't need full 3D in my opinion. Talking about top down view it can present the environment even better at some cases than first person 3D view. And give clearer, more tactical view. That's what I think at least. 3D view is not a must.

2D also won't look as terribly dated as 3D would a few years down the road.

I think the first Wasteland's graphics could have looked a little more interesting, but they were largely adequate. The interface was the biggest problem for me. Here are the suggestions I think would make the game go a lot smoother for me:

And where does he say anything about 3D or 2D in that quote?

Good quality of writing, setting, humour ala the original.
Better interface, maybe combat. Generally modernised in a good way.
Not let us all down like we're half expecting it to.

I think that you would have to be very careful about trying to come up with characteristics that JRPG blob combat always has. They still haven't stopped making blob JRPGs and there are now a very large number of titles in the genre. They have tried out a large number of variations on JRPG blob combat.

Dragon Quest 4's blob combat doesn't feel much like Final Fantasy 6's blob combat or Etrian Odyssey's blob combat. I haven't tried all the blob JRPGs, but I've tried a fair number and I can really only come up with one unifying characteristic to describe the combat; blobby.

P.S. Please keep Wasteland 2 free of blobbiness, for blobbiness leads to boringness and boringness leads to me not buying game.

Do you think top down means FPS? It's either isometric (3D models rendered on a 2D surface) ala JA2 or Wasteland/KoTC style 2D pixel art.

Isometric does not have to have 3d models yo. I think Johannes is asking if the sprites will be rendered or drawn.

    P. much.

But if the game is going to have tons of dungeon filler and random encounters, then blob is the right choice.

So do you consider Starcraft 2, Age of Decadence, Silent Storm, JA:BiA, etc. etc. 3D games with camera located over the battlefield to be FPS games, or what?

I just want for it to not turn out into another Grimoire.

We already had way too many potentially good CRPG projects biting the dust vapor.

Have you guies been hit with a brick in the head lately ? It's already surprising they are even thinking about having turn based combat in it, but to have them release a 2D game in this day and age is trusting your luck way too much.

I don't know man, there are plenty of recent 2D releases.

I honestly don't care, as long as it doesn't look like shit.

It has been posted before, but on the following site:http://www.google.com/moderator/#16/e=1f7176 there is a poll-like voting structure with the ability to include your own ideas. Might be worth checking out because the dev;s will look at it's results.
