What do you think of the Fallout 2 restoration mod?

There were some people complaining about the added "porn" posters in new reno.

I decided to join in. I guess i don't really have much against the original porn posters in the porn studio, but spreading out new ones ... across all of the city just grated really wrong.

It's not only that's unrealistic* like the whole of the fucking city is; more that the city was a balance of derp with it's specialized criminal clans, and now the posters are dominating thematically the whole town (even going against the burned out squalor).

*(a porn movie studio in a burned out town; that has apparently enough of a plebian audience to show sessions and put on new posters; a audience composed of jet addicts and prostitutes and made men)

I just can't like this new version of the restoration pack - i think it started going downhill when they added the EPA (with the mad scientist dude who SHOULDN'T EXIST!!!).
There were things before i liked; like Sulik's sister and it's connection to the slavers (not the tribe though), and i liked the idea of the ranger cabins , and maybe the hubologist treasure (but didn't try them).

But i just can't use this mod anymore. The rest ruins it.

Don't like it, I recommend using only the unnoficial patch without the "restored" content.

It doesn't add much to the story, and new locations are boring and miss style. There's already enough bringing shovels and exploring old factories in the original.
I liked the option to save Sulik's tribe and fly a vertibird to Unclave from Navarro.

The bug fixes add much, duh, bug fixes to the maingame and so Kilap needs to be thanked. The additional content however is duh, shit, unfortunately. :/ Prepare for random statue of liberty encounters inmidst the californian mainland while you do fetchquests for random monks wielding StarWars lightsabers.

I like it. I still haven't resolved all Abbey or Sulik village quests and it added enough that I almost got that sense of adventure again. Plus you have some easter eggs. The quality of the restored content isn't very high I'd say that.

Mods like this need to set a firm line on what exactly "restoration" means to them when they start out. As it is I half expect that there is a legend of a guy who talked to the janitor at black isle who overheard someone once mention a moon base that the Chinese fled to, and the FRP will be implementing this location in the next release.

Has the dialogue improved at all? Are you no longer railroaded into fighting Kaga? Do alternate paths no longer require really high stats?

The writing of the mod just doesn't mix well with the rest of the game. Skip the additional content and just install the bug fixes.

I think it's more or less..... interesting. Seeing the stuff that was cut (and with good reason).

It desperately needs a group to re-write the fragments of dialogue and game mechanics that it introduces and incorporate it into a seamless experience with the rest of the Main Game.

I also decided to join in, there is serious garbage going on that thread.

People are complaining that the game is not "Political Correct" enough, and asking it to be remade...

Could the modders make Jules white? It's kind of ridiculously racist to have the only significant black character selling drugs.

............

Just make the Wright family black, that should offer a better variety. No need to keep blacks poor and whites rich after the apocalypse.

And the examples of "Racism" they bring up are :M inaccurate...

Ascorti is mayor of Redding. First and foremost an entrepreneur, he owns the only casino in Redding (incidentally, also the town hall) and most of the real estate in the city, including widow Rooney's home and the Great Wanamingo Mine.

Sadly when I started confront this Trolling, killap got scared and shushed :rpgcodex: the discussion.

And the person who posted this refuses to answer my PM demolishing his assertions, and is now instead now asking for more racially diverse smut posters...

I haven't played it but it sums up why I hate most mods.

The only good mods are ones made by one guy or harshly controlled by one guy who either leaves shit alone aside from very narrow additions or very rarely actually has some judgement. The other 281838384 mods for each mod like that make me want to tear out my eyeballs, even simple mods like texture packs go full retard more often than not. Let's HDR the shit out of every rock. Awesome.

It's unbelievably bad. Mods in general are bad, but this one is exceptionally bad. The two parts I can best remember are Sulik's tribe and the monastery. The writing in both are so bad that they made me quit. They probably could have been decent with good writing even though the scenarios themselves were kind of dumb, but the restoration mod's writing was just awful. Also there were a lot of parts where you would do the quest before it was assigned and then you'd stumble on the quest giver and it would assume you'd already talked to them, which is pretty shitty.

Oh yeah, there was Kaga too. I'm pretty glad Kaga was taken out of the final game because he was probably the dumbest thing in the mod. Killing him over and over while he shouts garbage about being the chosen one. AAAAA

Just awful.

I can kind of understand wanting some of the content in the mod back in the game but most of it is just stupid and it was executed so poorly by the modders.

In fact, I don't think I've ever played a good restoration mod for any game. Stay away from them. They're universally awful.

We're all tempted to think that cut content is always awesome, no matter which game. After all, if it was cut, it was either too awesome or too much to implement in time, right? But the truth is, it was most likely cut because it fucking sucked.

Some time ago, I saw some blurry screenshots from enemies who didn't make it into Shadow of the Colossus and, predictably enough, my mind filled in the blanks and I thought they looked cooler than the ones in the final game.

A couple months ago I replayed Knights of the Old Republic 2 with the restoration mod. There was this one segment that I'm going to assume was restoration content (I'm not 100% sure because my game always crashed when I found the fourth Jedi the first time I played it, so I could never finish it) where you had to control HK-47 on his own. You're running around completely by yourself in a giant dungeon fighting groups of 5 or 6 robots at a time in a game with an awful combat engine. There was very little dialogue, no introduction or even exposition or anything - it just happened - and it was a half-finished mess. It was so awful. I would've quit right there if I wasn't so sure I was close to the end of the game. This has been my experience with pretty much every restoration mod. They're noble efforts but fall so short that it's not even worth it.

That said, I get so sad when I see all of Daggerfall's unused graphics :(

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:People - A ton of faces and people that are in the game files but not actually in the game. Apparently you can meet some of them if the game glitches up.

http://tcrf.net/The_Elder_Scrolls_II:_Daggerfall - Mostly unused interface graphics. The dragon skin and horseman are pretty cool.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:DAG ... s/Previews - A bunch of pre-release shots of the game. Probably the coolest picture is the swamp one, which shows an unused terrain type.

There was another site a long time ago (like 10 years maybe) that had a ton of guys on horses and glitched up catapults and stuff. The game was apparently supposed to have warring city-states that you could participate in and there are still traces of it on the CD. The site had a lot of cool information about it but I can't find it anymore.
