Brian Fargo returns from silence with a Wasteland 2 blog update.
It has been some time since I have posted a blog here and I apologize for the delay. I need to do a better job of communicating my thoughts and ideas as that is a part of the process I know people are interested in. I have been very focused on getting the first pass at all the writing complete by October. The thing that is most critical in creating a deep and re-playable experience is for us to have plenty of iteration time on the game. There is simply no substitute for allowing plenty of time for us to play the game over and over thus allowing us to hone in on the things that people are going try in the world. A wonderfully written script is not valuable if it is delivered too far into the development process. This game is going to be much deeper than most people realize and I will go out on a limb to say it is nearly impossible for two people to have the same experience playing through the game as there are so many nuanced decisions. The caliber of writing is very impressive and for those who wanted an M rated experience… you will be more than satisfied. We don’t pull any punches on the subject matters of a dark post apocalyptic world. My attitude is that if you going into a genre that has expectations then GO THERE.. all the way. It is for the same reasons I tend to love all the great shows and writing that I find on Showtime and HBO and find myself turned off by the material on network television. I don’t like to see pandering to a mass audience for my TV shows and I certainly won’t allow this game to soften up a rough world.

In addition to the benefits of creating better cause and effect it is also key in helping us understand what the asset list we are going to need. The map designs tell us everything about props, backgrounds, sound effects etc. Of course we are making progress on many fronts and I am especially excited at the ideas we are toying with in presenting the world map. So we will be working on a Kickstarter update in the next week that hits a variety of subjects including a write up by our technical director for those who want to dive deeper into our production thoughts.

Thanks again for all your fantastic support!

First real RPG with rape? I would have pledged more.

why are you so excited about rape? all that it will be is a couple of lines in a dialogue... not some sort of porn movie (thank god)

Was just joking really, I don't download skyrim sex mods or anything. I would appreciate the removal of the soft censorship that keeps PCs from doing things like raping women or killing children though. It happens in movies and real life enough. Given that wasteland has no publisher I don't see why not accept the free publicity. People talked about the hookers in GTA III enough to get them more sales for such a stupid thing.

I like what Fargo says. And hope it's not just bullshit PR speech. If he brings everything he talks about to the game, it will be one awesome crpg. I trust in old Wasteland devs anyway! They won't bring us popamole and this new faggotry like young ones are tempted to. Man it could be Wasteland all over again, but bigger and better with all the improvements like combat and isometric better graphics, better gameplay, dialogue, c&c... :bounce:

From what I've seen, I trust Fargo the most to deliver the game I look forward too in every aspect of it.

I like the bold parts. First two because I like replayability, and no bullshit censoring to pander to 12 years old. Second because there will be new info about the game. :D

Yeah, hopefully it's going to be substantial such as an overview of the character system for example.

Bro c'mon W2 is by a longshot the best real kickstarter crpg chance we now have. Seems we (Codexians) are the Fargo's target audience by everything he has so far said. If he doesn't deliver, I don't think no body will. Hell nobody even makes turn based kickstarters anymore in the crpg genre. Look at Obsidian and their "old school" offer... So I MUST be hopeful for this. And look at all the old devs from W1 that are working on it - Alan Pavlish, Michael A. Stackpole, Ken St. Andre and Liz Danforth. I don't think they are as "enamored" with these new popamole games like DA or Skyrim and want to make a real W2 sequel as something that doesn't conform to today's "standards" in terms of shit popamole action gaming and dumb stuff.

Yeah, at the moment we know more about Chaos Chronicles and game that didn't even need Kickstarter. W2 still has to catch up with that.

The sad thing for me is the studio that is working on it (inXile). They can have a few oldtimers, but the main studio is a talentless bunch. They couldn't even make a mainstream dumbed down game, which is not shit.

True, but we'll yet have to see. I trust in Fargo's ability to lead, and other oldtimers steering the game in the right direction. BTW. weren't they hiring programmers, writers and artists? They even contacted that STASIS guy (gorgeous art). So maybe inXile won't be as talentless as you think. ;)

Making a tactical turn based game is quite different from making a popamole action game.

Still, with how both kickstarters have gone I really wish Tim Cain worked at InXile. :(

Yeah, and that Jason Anderson is still with inXile... :(

But still, this is the game I have my hopes highest for.

I presume THAT too will have to be revealed eventually. But as far as character system goes, I think it will be a hybrid of skill points during leveling up and skills leveling up during use, just like the original, and I like that. In fact I'm fairly certain it will be a skill system similar to original.

Well, I wouldn't hold your breath for it. That you don't even know which character system the game employs 6 months after being funded should tell you something.

Let's set ourselves up for disappointment.
The Codex is not a learning animal. That's why Fargo hides information instead of being dumb like Obsidian and killing people's hopes while funding is still open.

Bro, I never expected it to be finished in year and a half. That's the only thing that's telling me.

Well to be fair IIRC, their MAIN priority is getting the writing/story done sometime in October. After that, then engine and stuff that they need in the engine to support the story and quests as well as characters and stats/skills etc. I'm sure (combat) it is being worked on, and is still in flux and they are probably continually tweaking it. So nothing solid to really tell us.

According to Feargus MCA is wrapping up his W2 work in the next few weeks.

OK cool. I guess they were able to get the story stuff done on schedule (October).
