Unhealthy interest in sales figures

I just wish the game were isometric.
But it is isometric, isn't it?!
I think the term is pseudo-isometric. It uses the same general angle as the isometric projection, but in a 3D engine.
Using a 3D engine has the advantage that you can apply textures to objects and you don't have to create and animate sprites for the characters.

Compare the isometric and 3D cubes:

Here is the perspective distortion in isometric projection:

Check out the square stones AoD in the screenshot and compare them to the isometric chessboard:

Here is another shortcoming of the isometric perspective, namely that it can lead to visual paradoxes:

In other words, it's isometric unless you want to be really pedantic about it.

I have no problem with referring to Fallout as an isometric game. Pedantic would be to complain that Fallout's is trimetric, not isometric, because the X, Y, Z are not equally scaled and the angle between the any two axes is not 120 degrees. :smug:

Isometric is one of several parallel projections, which are ways of representing 3D space in 2D so that parallel lines stay parallel, instead of using a focal point. I find it very roundabout to to say that a 3D game looks like it's using a specific 2D approximation of 3D rather than saying it's a 3D game using an overhead view.

This is starting to sound pedantic, isn't it? Oh man, I walked right into that one.
Anyway, there's a good isometric discussion thread on the Codex here.

To be honest i think these figures are not too bad. The game isn't even finished, i bought the game because of the codex and VD being a user here.

I am really not a fan of these paying for beta releases, thats something that has only a started a couple of years ago?

I am honestly unsure if this is a good evolution. I mean for the small studies it is good to receive some money while still developping the game but still i don't know.

It is always dangerous to release part of an unfinished and unpolished game.

As for "isometric" im going with what Tim Cain told me. Cavalier Oblique, which we only call isometric for ease of use and general familiarity.

Have you thought about Oculus Rift support?
Im afraid most here will take that seriously, but i brofisted that for real reasons. Namely -

I would suggest something else though... but im sure Vince and IT can see the option and possibilities themselves.
And me and him are not on best terms anyway...

But, what the hell, he took some of my suggestions regardless, when they were good.
Cast AR, Iron Towers. Cast AR. (not now of course but keep it in mind)

I'm waiting for release, because it would be pointless to buy the game only for it to sit idle on my HDD, as I (usually) don't play unfinished titles. I imagine there are many people with that attitude, so sales numbers are bound to rise after that magical Thursday. AoD will also return to the front page on release, as is usual for Steam (or am I wrong?). That should result in further increase of sales.

How much would you need to sell in order to warrant a sequel?

Actually I don't think playing AoD now in the early stage will spoil the final experience of the game too much. In fact, the beauty of the game lies in the multitude of the possible playthroughs, and to be able to enjoy it fully you kind of have to already know what's up, i.e. have some experience with how the skill system works, how to fight etc. No comparison to something like F:NV, where I basically have zero interest to play it again after finishing most of the quests possible in a single playthrough; if I were to play it halfway through and then abandon until the rest of the content appeared, I really wouldn't want to play it again from the scratch just to see what happens in the end.

I don't care about 'spoiling the experience'. I just don't like unfinished stuff and prefer to wait for the final version. Concerning games, this usually means around three months after release, although I'm hoping for a more reasonable 'on release' with AoD.

Btw. MicoSelva, you know what would be a great next game for your "The Codex plays" series? May I add, with a lot of interesting death screens and opportunities to see them? :smug:

This is not the place to discuss that, but first hints have been made in the BG2 LP thread, so head over there if you're interested.

I think Cain is mistaken. If you want examples of games that *do* use oblique projection, I can point you to Divine Divinity or Ultima Online.

Ultima Online is like the image on the bottom left. Fallout is most like the image on the middle right. Cavalier projection is not shown in the image unfortunately.

[edit]

If you rotate the bottom left image you get the same projection used in some of the earlier Ultimas:
