I'd be fine with a lack of in game map if the area transitions were more logical, but they don't seem to be laid out on a grid, and many area transitions move you quite a bit if you do a loop.

Come to think of it, yes, and it's a feature I like.I thought being lost was part of the game features.
The problem is that not all area transitions move you an equal amount, so you'd need to draw a lot of weird connections and such.
