Who knows. They seem to shoot for a near future scenario. I don't have much confidence in their ability to pull that off.

What I don't get is why someone would create such a bland scene in 3D. It would be cheaper and more classy to take the janitor, put a uniform and beard on him and film him putting out a cigar.

I would've at least found that charming. Or they could nick the Alpha Protocol trailer where some guards mistake Thorton for Fidel Castro, and then pass it off as a Tropico game.

In times of political turmoil and social unrest, the people are calling for visionary leaders, who will steer the fate of their country with foresight and ingenuity. Prove yourself once again as a feared dictator or peace-loving statesman on the island state of Tropico and shape the fate of your very own banana republic through four distinctive eras. Face new challenges on the international stage and always keep the needs of your people in mind.

For the first time in the series, manage extensive archipelagos, build bridges to connect your islands and use new means of transportation and infrastructure. Send your Tropicans on raids to steal the wonders of the world, including the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower. Customize your palace at will and give election speeches from your balcony, to win the favor of your subjects.

So strategy and management\business simulator is developed by a studio with experience in...horse simulators?

I guess any hopes are rather built on this part of the graph:

Especially after M&M Heroes VII though, I can understand the lack of confidence.

Limbic is quite the surprise.

Welcome to your own paradise: This is TROPICO 6.

We, Limbic Entertainment, are very proud to announce that we are developing the 6th entry of Kalypso Media’s renown franchise TROPICO. Together, we build on the traditional foundation of the highly successful, 15-years-old series, and evolve it to the next stage by adding our unique flavour. Once again, the players can prove themselves as dictators and shape the fate of their nation through distinctive eras – but this time, thanks to the power of Unreal Engine 4 and our proficiency, TROPICO 6 will be bigger, better and more beautiful than ever.

For the first time in the series, we provide El Presidente with whole archipelagos – groups of multiple islands – to build his regime on and broaden his ambit. With an extensive infrastructure and over 150 unique buildings, ruling over TROPICO will be a diverse, challenging and fun experience. Additionally, players can prove their superiority over the other nations of the world by stealing their beloved landmarks and assimilate them into their tropical panorama.

El Presidente promised his subjects public transportation, and so we delivered: Tailored to El Presidentes needs (and player feedback), dictators-to-be can now connect their islands with bridges, construct tunnels and transport their citizens and tourists in taxis, busses and aerial cable cars. Of course, there’ll be also some prestigious vehicles reserved for El Presidente himself.

One of El Presidentes tried and true wisdoms reads: “There’s no place like home”. Therefore, we proudly announce a fully customizable palace that can be shaped to the players gusto. Thus, the player can give even more convincing election-speeches from their palaces balconies and make promises that they can’t possibly keep.

El Presidente will be back in 2018 on PC, Linux, Mac, PS4 and Xbox One. Stay tuned for upcoming content and more innovations on our official social media channels:

Agreed... Tropico 3 was alright I thought but the series has long lost its initial charm even though they desperately try to hold onto it. The first game wasn't even that great, it just had... infinite amounts of charm.

It's because they did not add anything, like DEM models and large islands.
I look at the screens, apart from a few shaders and depth of field I still see the same city builder with the same lame ass topography and AI.
The charm comes mostly from the music and athmosphere, it's a pretty good prelude if you plan go to a Spanish speaking country.

The bridge in the last screenshot looks super unrealistic with a 45° angle for the road. It's Unreal 4 now, but the game doesn't look much better than I remember Tropico 5.

They ran out of jokes and gags and it gets boring, the extended trailer is more of the same with just some added pilot stupidity.

Ahaha oh wow it looks like it is made with duct tape, and there is another such bridge in the first screenshot too.

Loved Tropico 1 - 4, have not played 5. Given recent decline in Kalypso games, will wait to see if this one is good without 50 GB of DLC slathered on.

Multiple islands? In Tropico 5 they were separate maps that didn't appear to interact with each other economically or otherwise and merely served to provide some variety to building. Either they've increased the map size considerably to encompass multiple islands, or pulled a Sims 3 where the maps remained separate but are much more interconnected. From the Alpha pictures I'm guessing the former.

Short notes from an interview:
  • Limbic won a pitch
  • multiplatform
  • multiple islands, archipelago
  • expanded era system from T5
  • customizable palace
  • election speeches
  • simulated citizens with agendas, needs, day-night cycle
  • 15 single player missions (fixed start and final mission, between these El Presidente and Penultimo go on a nostalgia trip and the player can pick from different missions, telling different stories)
  • landmarks (acquired in „raids and heists“) will have gameplay effects (Statue of Liberty boosts immigrant XP, Eiffel tower tourism,…)
  • PC, Mac, Linux, PS4, Xbone

When will they stop raping this franchise's corpse? Kalypso have shown time and time again that they just don't "get" Tropico and have just been veering off into wackier and wackier directions that are more obnoxious than fun or funny. Tropico 1's genius was pulling off a black comedy about poverty, despotism and cold war skullduggery on some barren atoll in the mid-20th century Caribbean. It was grounded enough in reality that you actually felt for the colorful little sprites with names and jobs and families -- the true protagonists of the game -- that eked out a living in their absolute shithole of an island while you mismanaged and embezzled and engaged in diplomatic shenanigans. And even when you did succeed, the game kept it real -- the island was still a third world shithole, just one where people didn't starve to death or live in corrugated iron shacks.

Now instead we've got increasingly WACKEE and CRAYZEE sim-city-on-an-island games that bear only a passing ressemblance to anything in the Caribbean or in the real world for that matter, and it's been getting worse and worse with each new game. Having El Prez become some kind of large-scale Arsene Lupin stealing eiffel towers and statues of liberty seems to be the final step for the franchise to move into cloud cuckoo land.

:salute:

And in the newer games, the dictatorial path isn't really an option for an efficient game. It's too easy to please the majority and win elections. The game never feels oppressive, if you execute people, it's rarely because you have to in order for your regime to survive, but because you are bored and do it for a diversion (which is a kind of evil that doesn't fit the theme).

Not to mention that a few minutes into the game your island already has pristine asphalt roads, multi-storey parking lots and more cars per capita than your average Amurikkan neighborhood. Fast forward a few more minutes and the place looks like effin' Miami. Is it too much to ask that the towns in a Caribbean shithole simulator should be more like Kingston or Port-au-prince? It's almost like the devs have never set foot outside their own country.
